RED CROSS BLOODMOBILE St. Joan of Arc will be sponsoring their first blood drive of 2015 on February 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the school gym. This is such a good day for all to give from the heart on this Valentine’s Day. Give a unit or two of your life sustaining blood. Instead of the cookies the American Red Cross staff furnishes, we will try to round up some homemade Valentine cookies! (Any volunteers? Let Gene or Dennis hear from you!) truth as it makes itself clear. Whether he is a pastor, a bishop, or a pope, the priest of God must lead from a heart full of love and with a mind humbly open to the truth. Teaching. Our faith is a revealed faith, mean-ing we don’t just make it up as we go along. It comes to us from the words and deeds of Jesus Christ, who is the revelation of God the Father. To stray from the teachings of Jesus is to venture into dangerous territory. This is why a prospec-tive priest must spend nine years in formation after high school. The first four years of this for-mation focus on the study of critical thinking (philosophy). The last five years focus on the study of divine revelation (theology) and include a lengthy period of pastoral service. Some people think this formation is too much. I question whether it is enough! The People of God deserve the best. Mystery. The word “sacrament” means mys-tery. Christ reveals the mystery of the Father. The seven sacraments reveal the mystery of Christ. The priest administers the sacraments to the People of God so that the mystery of Christ might come alive within them. In doing this, the priest must not promote himself but must strive to be an icon/image of Christ to God’s people. This fact should humble the priest, because it means his individual personality is far less im-portant to the People of God than his simple role of being an image of Christ. God’s plan for his Church includes priests. Each parish community is gifted with potential priestly vocations. It is up to us as parishioners to pray for, promote, and nurture those vocations on a regular basis. Lately, I am aware of some really positive movement in this regard, so please keep that in your intentions! You may notice some young men in cassock and surplice assisting the servers at our larger Sunday Masses. These fel-lows are Masters of Ceremony and the primary requirement is that they are at least open to the possibility of becoming a priest. SACRAMENTAL PREP TEACHER NEEDED We need a teacher for our Sacramental PREP Class. For those of you who are not familiar with Sacramental PREP, it is a special class designed to prepare students who have missed the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion which are usually received in the second grade. The class meets week-ly on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 8:15 in the school and consists of seven students from 3rd - 6th grade. This group re-ceived First Reconciliation on December 3 and are now prepar-ing for their First Holy Communion on May 2. Due to a serious family health issue, the current teacher will need to take a leave of absence for the rest of the year beginning on February 4. The children have worked hard and are looking forward to the time when they can join all of us at the table for Holy Communion. VINCENT DE PAUL: YOUR GENEROSITY AT WORK During the last three months (October, November, and De-cember 2014), our St. Vincent de Paul Conference has been able to assist 67 families (177 people) in their hour of need. Thanks to the generosity of the parishioners at St. Joan of Arc, we have been able to offer support with such items as furniture, groceries, utilities (electricity and gas), rent, and transportation (gas). In rare circumstances, such as 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, our confer-ence may offer financial support to the national St. Vincent de Paul Disaster Relief fund. We always need more volunteers.
