To the board of theInternational Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists
Frederiksberg, March 2016Dear ISRRT Congress Committee,
Welcoming the 21st ISRRT World Congress 2020
The Danish Council of Radiographers hereby has the pleasure of applying to host the 21st ISRRT World Congress, 2020 – The Human Touch.
Our choice of motto reflects the Scandinavian perception of our profession and our work. As healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility to put equal focus on the CARE and the HEALTH of a patient.
From our perspective, Aalborg is an excellent choice as host city for a World Congress. It is the capital of the Region of North Denmark and it is situated in the centre of Scandinavia. Although the city of Aalborg might be unknown to most people outside Scandinavia, it is one of Denmark’s leading congress cities. In regards to facilities and in the capacity of hosting conventions the size of a World Congress, the community of Aalborg has great experience in hosting this type of event.
Being a relatively small city with a population of approx. 200,000, Aalborg holds a clear advantage. The World Congress will set its mark on Aalborg that week, and ISRRT will be visible in the cityscape. Moreover, the size of the city and its collaborative environment will definitely have an influence on the community’s willingness to meet our wishes.
In anticipation of hosting the 21st ISRRT World Congress, a reservation at the Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre from 8-14 June 2020 has already been made. We have chosen the dates in consideration of the weather and national holidays in the spring- and summertime. Other alternative dates are either 15-21 June 2020 or 17-23 August 2020.
As a host for the World Congress, Danish Council of Radiographers will work towards an innovative congress, with events that have both a high educational level as well as being social in nature. We would like to see education take place, as both classical lecturing, but also in ways where dialogue and hands-on are keywords. We will work towards this goal with didactical information and guides for speakers, published well in advance of the congress.
We believe in a holistic approach to our profession. At our national conference at the Danish Parliament in November 2015, one of our key messages to the Danish politicians and the Danish population was that our profession cannot be summarized as “Just a push on a button”.
Our profession is both complex and comprehensive, and that will also be transferred into the scientific program for the 21st World Congress. We will keep an eye on the difference in skills between radiographers worldwide to ensure that there will be something to gain for each and every participant.
In our role as hosts, we also see the opportunity to share the Scandinavian way with our colleagues from around the world. To inspire and to share our passion; caring for our profession – and for those we seek to take care of.
Finally, we recognize the unique opportunity for a large number of Danish radiographers to embrace inspiration from all over the world at the same World Congress, if held in Denmark.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in Aalborg in 2020.
Yours sincerely

Purpose and main objectives
The Human Touch
10
Our reason for applying for The ISRRT 21st World Congress in 2020 is to be understood in both an international and national context.
International backgroundWhen Dr. Michael Ward, President of The ISSRT, addressed the delegation at our national political congress in 2011, it was with a clear message that targeted the delegates’ emotions.
He spoke of the meaningfulness of ISRRT’s international work from a Danish radiographer’s point of view. His key message was that since we come from a country of professional frontrunners, we should focus on how Danish radiographers can contribute to the advancement of international standards of radiography, rather than on how the international society can contribute to the way in which we practice radiography in Denmark. The essence is that we, as individuals and organization, can make a difference on an international level.
National backgroundFor the last couple of years, we have been working towards raising awareness among the Danish politicians as well as the Danish population in what radiographers and radiological technicians actually do. In 2015, we hosted a conference within the Danish Parliament, which focused on the radiation protection of Danish patients. By doing so, we have brought the importance of care, dose and quality to the attention of the most influential legislators in Denmark.
Motivation for applying
11
Our motto was chosen with careful consideration. We wanted a statement that reflects the standards of Danish radiographers’ approach to their profession, but at the same time, a statement that is catchy.
Let's strive furtherFor a long time, radiographers have been focusing on being technical experts, seeking to produce the best possible diagnostic images, on a dose as low as possible. Now, almost every radiographer can readily achieve both great images and low doses, as a result of technical and educational developments available. Therefore, the time has come to strive further and focus on other areas, where we, as the human intermediary, can make a difference.
"Skilled radiographers or radiological technicians continue to improve and attain pictures of higher quality, and at the same time on a lower dose, than any pre-determined protocol. These skills are the ones normally perceived to be the classical aspects of The Human Touch of radiographers", says Charlotte Graungaard Falkvard.
Another aspect, which occasionally seems underappreciated, is the interaction with the patient. It is this aspect of The Human Touch that allows us as radiographers to give our patients a safe and comforting experience with the healthcare system. The Danish Council of Radiographers considers the development of specialist-patient interaction skills to be at least as important as the development of technical skills.
The human aspectsThe human aspect of our professional practice is intertwined with our ability to master the technical aspects of our profession. Mastering these technical aspects provides us with a surplus of mental resources, which allows us to assess the situation and act in a humane way in relation to our patients.
Despite operating in a technical field based on natural laws, we also interact with human beings, whose actions are not always logical or foreseeable. In our opinion, the true strength of our professional field is our capability as individuals to combine these two aspects of the Human Touch.
The Human Touch
Meetovation Danish Meeting Design
12
The Danes excel in developing diverse and beneficial meeting design concepts, which increases the yield of the time and money spent, when gathering people to share their knowledge and expand their networks.
The unique Danish meeting design concept, Meetovation, results in making conferences and congresses more efficient and true to the purpose of facilitating knowledge. It actively engages participants and offers a creative approach of flexible use of the congress facilities.
A such meeting design concept will benefit to a high level of outcome for all participants and the overall success for the ISSRT World Congress. The use of the following design elements will support the framework of the congress:
» Participants Involvement» Creative set-up» Responsible thinking » Local inspiration
Research and science of learning, motivation and engagement confirm that using these elements will ensure higher level of learning.
EngagementIt takes focus and engagement
to learn and apply new knowledge; hence we should create optimal
conditions for engagement in our meetings. When we are in flow, we are completely
engaged.
RelationsHumans have a universal need
to interact, be connected to, and experience caring for others, we really have to nurture that at our meetings.
TechnologyTechnology can be a great way to
support the objectives of the meeting and to brand the meeting to be on the
beat of the latest trends.
Meetovation Danish Meeting Design
13
Positive emotionsParticipants with a high positivity
ratio 3:1, learn more, are more creative, more effective and feel
better.
VariationA normal meeting participants
prefer variation. Different ways of communicating and working keeps
the mind sharp and gives a better experience. It's like food, we don't
want the same dish all the time.
Inspiring physical setupThe physical setup of the meeting
should always support the objectives and the content of the meeting.
AutonomyA great meeting program has a well-
tuned balance between structure and mandatory activities on one hand
and free time and participant driven activities on the other hand.
Local inspirationAll venues and locations have unique
strengths that we should try to take advantage of. It's cheap and it
gives the participants a much better experience.
CompetenceParticipants want to experience
mastery and control with whatever they do. For this end we should always make sure that the
meeting has a great content that de-velops the participant’s competences
and helps them become better at doing their job after the meeting.
14
Purpose and main objectives
The Human TouchThe purpose of setting goals is to keep the World Congress, as well as our own ambitions, on track. We want these goals to serve as our guiding principles, which will allow us to adopt a more innovative way of thinking.
To achieve our goals, we have sought to create a World Congress programme with great diversity; in the chosen subjects, in the learning forums and in the involvement of the participants.
We believe that we can make a programme, which appeals to all levels of radiography; from undergraduate to Ph.D.
International objectivesThe objectives of ISRRT are also the main objectives of the World Congress.
// To advance the science and practice of radiography by promoting improved standards of education and research.
// To make the results of the research and experiences in radiation medicine and protection available to practitioners internationally.
To make these improved standards visible, it will require inviting international magazines (e.g. Diagnostic Imaging Europe and Radiography) to attend the World Congress and have them delineate the congress in their publications.
In regards to research results, we will invite our
own top researchers from Scandinavia, as well as a handful of international researches, to share their results on the congress.
National objectivesBesides the overall objectives for a World Congress, set by the ISRRT, which will set its mark on the event, we set our own objectives for a successful World Congress. We want a World Congress which is serious and highly ambitious, but yet taking place in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere.
We want to set a high standard and create a set of guiding principles to inspire future congresses of the ISSRT.
The Danish Council of Radiographers is working hard to draw attention to the importance of Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy and related subjects on the national health agenda. We aim to establish an extensive national coverage of the World Congress, including national news broadcasts and articles in major Danish news media.
We will also invite representatives from the national parliament and aim to have the Danish Minister of Healthcare visit the World Congress.
To achieve these goals, The Danish Council of Radiographers will draw on the media and political contacts that we have established over the years.
15
Participants’ objectives We have examined participators’ feedback from previous congresses, and through our analysis of this feedback, we have formulated our objectives.
We aim at establishing measurable objectives through a learning process, which involves competences, knowledge, networking and behaviour. Through the learning process, we have an ambition to hatch 1,000+ ambassadors for the advancement of research and ensuring that experiences are shared.
We will also focus on the inputs from participants. Our goal is to have open discussion sessions at least twice a day, where all inputs and subjects may be debated. We will use the actual congress facilities as a creative instrument to encourage knowledge sharing and active discussions regarding various aspects of our profession.
Facilitating networks is a key element in the World Congress, and our ambition is that every participant will meet at least 5 new contacts to add to their professional network.
From the total number of participants, we will work towards a broader diversity amongst the participants in relation to age, nationality, professional position, etc. although we expect having 50 per cent of the delegates coming from Scandinavia.
Our evaluation of the World Congress focuses on the above. However, we will also focus on post-congress assessments:
// Was the World Congress worth your time and money?
// Where did you achieve the highest level of professional advantage?
// Which subject had your primary interest?
Evaluating the World Congress, it is our ambition that 90 per cent of the participants should rate the professional output to be of a “high degree” or better. As a special target group, we would like to involve our students and newly graduated radiographers.
By employing the strategy of involving participants before, during and after the World Congress, we want the participants to identify the congress as one they would not want to miss out on in the future – especially the young professionals.

Dr. Fozy Peer President ISRRT The Norwegian Society of Radiographers hereby support the application from the Danish Society for of the 21st ISRRT World Congress 2020 - "The Human Touch" The title of the congress "The Human Touch" is descriptive of how the Nordic countries in general, and The Danish Society especially, approaches the radiographic development of the 21st century. Danish and Nordic radiography has a history of combining the human and the technical aspects of radiography – a tradition that continues to be developed in the future advancement of our specialist field. The Norwegian Society strongly support the goal of developing radiography towards a higher level in both technical aspects as well as concerning the human access to modern digital radiography. Denmark is, as you know, centrally located just north of central Europe with excellent transportation possibilities including an international hub airport. With access and availability taken care of, it will be fast and easy for the participants to reach the congress venue. The Norwegian Society of Radiographers welcomes the ISRRT World Congress back to Europe in 2020, after being hosted by South Korea in 2016 and by Trinidad and Tobago in 2018. I hope that the ISRRT board will assess Denmark as a qualified candidate for hosting the 21st World Congress for Radiographers in 2020, and I look forward to possibly meeting you all in Denmark.

Sustainable meetingsDenmark is world known as a green and sustainable country due to its many clean-tech industries and level of scientific research in these areas. In the recent years, the meetings industry has also given great attention to how meetings and congresses can be held more sustainable and green.
A joint effort and cross-national cooperation between private and public organizations in Denmark, Danish Sustainable Event Initiative (DSEI) together with Denmark being the host for the 1st ISO20121 certified EU Presidency has strengthen and developed Denmark as a sustainable nation, including as a host country for sustainable meetings and events.
Part of the work with DSEI consists of mapping already environmental certificated meeting operators and push action towards more certified meeting operators, and to this day Aalborg as a conference city has 49 % of its hotel rooms certified.

Excellentcongressfacilities in the bustling heart of the city
The venue option no. 1 for ISRRT World Congress 2020 will be the Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre, idyllically situated in the centre of Aalborg and yet in midst of the beautiful green spot of the city, the Kildeparken.
For the special occasion of ISRRT World Congress 2020, the Aalborg Congress & Culture will serve as the most optimal location for the key notes, parallel and panel sessions, workshops, poster sessions, demos and exhibition as well as the location for coffee breaks and luncheons, creating the best possible setting for networking with the exhibitors and amongst the participant.
Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre is one of Scandinavia’s largest and most flexible congress centers with 500,000 visiting guests and 1,000 events on a yearly basis. Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre is ideally situated in the city’s largest park right in the heart of the city. The congress centre is just a 10-minute drive from Aalborg Airport. In close connection to Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre, you will find no less than 1,700 hotel rooms, also allowing for the most optimal networking setting to take place during the ISRRT World Congress 2020.
Having undergone a major refurbishment lately and ongoing upgrading, the congress centre is equipped with the latest technology and all modern facilities required for the purpose of making every event successful. F&B is supplied by “Papegøjehaven”, the Centre’s excellent restaurant, which can cater for as many as 3,000 guests at the same time.
The congress centre provides 700 parking spaces, free Wi-Fi, fax, cash machine and information desks. There’s an English pub in the basement with darts and skittles and, with the park on its doorstep, delegates can easily pop out for a walk and a chat, go jogging or simply relax.
It is our recommendation and belief that Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre will serve at the best venue for the ISRRT World Congress for the reasons mentioned above. We have already pre-booked all the below mentioned rooms and conference halls, assuring that we have the capacity needed to host a successful ISRRT World Congress, should Aalborg be chosen as host.

Venue Option #2
For the ISRRT 2020 World Congress, we as organisers have found the most suitable and preferable venue in Aalborg. In our proposal, you will find Venue Option no. 1 Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre, which we have based our detailed budget on and present to you in detail in this proposal.
Our Venue Option no. 2 is a different model for hosting the congress. In this model we present in short that it is also possible to host the ISRRT World Congress 2020 on various locations along the city’s beautiful waterfront. In this venue option no. 2, the main congress with key lectures and a few of the sessions will take place at Musikkens Hus, a brand new concert venue with a large amphitheatrical concert hall and three smaller meeting rooms.
Other sessions will take place at Nordkraft, the city’s previous coal-fired power station, that now has been turned into a centre of cultural power with various meeting facilities in different style, ranging from regular conference rooms to cinemas, gym halls and open spaces. Here the exhibition will take place.
We also have the possibility to take one or two of the nearby hotels' facilities into use, if necessary.
Catering will be handled by the individual meeting venues, hence a greater task of coordinating is needed for this option. We are convinced that Venue Option no. 2 will indeed be a whole new way of arranging this type of congresses, and this counts as the advantage of going with this venue option.
However, as mentioned earlier, this option leaves us as local organizers with an even greater task of coordination. Moreover delegates will have to leave sessions and shift between various venues, which is not necessarily the most optimal situation. We know that it is easier for networking to happen and for people to meet and exchange ideas and thoughts, if you are close to each other and meet fewer distractions along your way.
Last but not least, venue option no. 2 is more costly, and for this and the above mentioned reasons, we recommend venue option no. 1, Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre for the ISRRT World Congress 2020.

Let's galaunder thetree tops Gala dinner at the Robbers' Camp
48
49
The location of the gala dinner will be the Forest of Rold, the largest forest area in Denmark. For centuries, this area was known as a dubious place for ordinary people to be - especially at night.
In the dark, the Rold Robbers would make their move and attack people who, for one reason or the other, had to pass through the forest, which was the only way to get from North to South at that time being.
The atmosphere of the past will be recreated when we resurrect the robbers for the participants in order to make a thrilling event with a touch of local Danish history.
Coaches will take the participants of ISRRT 2020 on a short 30-minute drive to the entrance of Rebild National Park. Here robbers greet the participants and walk them through the forest. At a certain point, robbers dressed in old times’ robber-outfits “attack” the participants. The robbers will take the participants (and prisoners) further into the forest and tell them the story of the robbers and the area as such.
Afterwards, an exquisite dinner is awaiting the participants under the magnificent treetops. During the dinner, only to be experienced in the region of North Denmark, robber stories and entertainment will keep the participants alert and make the evening unforgettable!
In this informal and relaxed atmosphere, the participants will have the perfect opportunity to experience local folklore and become one unique and memorable experience richer.
Aalborg Beerwalk'n'talkProbably the best networking opportunity in the World
50
The Danes have a reputation for brewing some of the finest beer in the World, so it is only natural that the social event of the ISRRT 2020 World Congress will focus on this fine drink.
The scene of the Aalborg Beerwalk'n'Talk event will be set in one of the Medieval squares in the centre of Aalborg. Live music, finger food (e.g. Danish hot dogs) and up to 125 different beer types from local breweries will be on the menu at the 9 specially appointed Aalborg Beerwalk pubs opening their doors to the delegates of the ISRRT 2020 World Congress.

Professional eventsSite visit to the brand new Aalborg University Hospital
Danish Regions in 2007 presented a plan for a new hospital structure. The new structure cuts number of hospitals with 24-hour comprehensive acute reception down from 40 in 2007 to 21 in 2020. The structural change means fewer and more specialized hospitals – and the closure of a number of smaller hospitals.
In total there are devoted 41.4 billion Danish Kroner (5,5 billion Euros) over the years until 2020 for the renovation of existing hospitals, and the construction of six brand new super hospitals.
One of these six hospitals will be placed in Aalborg and is currently under construction. It will be the target of at least one professional event, depending on the demand.
