As a new candidate for the Brittonkill school board, I believe
we should build upon what we have today to make Brittonkill
an outstanding educational experience for students. Even
though we face fiscal challenges in front of us we can look at
this as an opportunity to improve with new ideas and
approaches.
If elected to the school board I would propose that a five year
plan be developed on how we would like to see school and
programs developed. By developing a plan it is easier to change
and move to new methods and approaches. We should look
to increase the use of technology such as skyping (interactive
video classes) to offer more advanced placement courses and
save money. Similarly sized schools in our area use this
approach to offer classes to a few students cost effectively.
We should develop a three year budget forecast to remove
uncertainty year over year. This approach would identify future
fiscal issues and provide additional time to address these
issues. We should look to different approaches to saving money,
like implement green energy solutions, going paperless and
recycling. We should also look to get business sponsors to
alleviate fiscal constraints.
We should survey parents on what types of advanced
placement classes they would like to see offered over the next
five years, versus year over year. This too would remove
uncertainty and assist in planning.
We should offer internships and job shadowing to eligible
students. This would provide students with real life work
experience and assist them in their career choices. This could
also benefit local businesses in providing readily available
workers. We should to look increase our support of local
businesses where beneficial.
Brittonkill has many talented, bright students; good teachers
and coaches. We should continue to build for the future during
these difficult fiscal times by trying new approaches.
