Godfather of
RO-RO MAISTROS Minister of Mercantile Marine
Current developments at Aegean clearly substantiate the forward-looking vision that the company has had in place for many years. The christening and launch of MAISTROS PIRAEUS on May 22, in the presence of Minister of Mercantile Marine Mr. George Voulgarakis, opens a new era of fuel delivery for the Greek islands. The new fleet of Ro-RO Oil Tankers, of which the MAISTROS is the first, will literally transform the distribution system
in Greece for a large part of the country. Aegean has put into place a system that is efficient, intelligent, and innovative.
Likewise, the new line of automotive and marine lubricants launched by Ae-gean establishes important inroads into major markets, in Greece and around the world, that appear set to make the Aegean brand a heads-on competitor to the ma-jors, who have dominated these areas for years. These high-performance products have already convinced legions of consumers, shipowners, and industrial clients that the Aegean lubricants are top-of-the-line and are equal to the brands that have been market leaders for decades.
In bunkering, the purchase of Vancouver-based ICS Petroleum, following the recent buyouts in Belgium and the UK of bunkering companies, is indicative of the global expansion we can expect in the coming months and years by Aegean Marine Petroleum. The establishment of bunkering stations in Greece, Gibraltar, Ghana, UAE, Singapore, Jamaica, Northern Europe, and North America point to a global market leadership that is unprecedented in the bunkering industry.
These accomplishments have not been accidental, nor the result of whim. They have followed a clear sense of purpose. We must remember that a vision unful-filled is a romantic notion. On the other hand, a vision brought to fruition with unwavering diligence, with steadfast determination, and with a tenacity for excel-lence is proof of the highest professionalism and purpose to succeed. This is the Aegean vision.

Αegean BaS in POLMAR 2008 ExerciseAegean’s BaS participated successfully in a pollution fight exercise organized by “La Préfecture Maritime de la Manche et de la mer de Nord” (Frensh coast-guard) and EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency). On June 17, 2008, the Aegean Princess launched a distress message, according to the exercise plan, and the Captain notified he was terminating his sea passage from Rotterdam to La Rochelle, to seek shelter in the bay of Saint-Vaast (Pointe Barfleur). The French Coastguard formed a cell of specialists in counter pollu-tion measures and a helicopter was ordered to bring a team of observers and liaison officers on board the Aegean Princess. The “Ile de Brehat,” chartered by EMSA, had deployed an oil boom of a total length of 250 meters and, assisted by a tugboat belonging to the French coast-guard, contained and recovered the oil spill. The “Le Millesime,” equipped with another recovery system, was fighting a smaller oil spill. The exercise was completed successfully on the same day at 15:00 hours and all vessels returned to their daily operations.

The International Shipping Exhibition “Posidonia” which takes place biannually celebrated 40 years with this year’s exhibition. This year’s 21st exhibition, which took place from
June 2 to June 6 at Athens’ former airport terminal at Hellinikon, registered a significant increase of participation from every area of the shipping sector. Participation exceeded 1,600 exhibitors from 80 countries, a record number, and companies from Honduras, Iceland, Luxembourg, and Mongolia participated for the first time. At the same time, 22 national stands, more than ever before, were hosted, including stands from Romania and Sweden. Results from the orga-nizers’ data show the presence of Asia was very dynamic, with more than 300 exhibitors, a number triple the number of Asian exhibitors during the 2000 exhibition. Of these, approximately 100 were from China and 62 from Japan, Singapore, and Korea, which constitute 50% of total exhibitors from Asia at this years event.
The strong ministerial presence underlined the Greek govern-ment’s commitment to the Posidonia institution and highlighted the great importance officials attach to the international promotion of the Hellenic shipping industry. Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, in his opening speech, pointed out that the large number of exhibitors at this years’ event “exceeded every previous Posidonia exhibition, highlighting not only the unanimous recognition of the exhibition by the global shipping community, but also the increasing dynamics of international shipping.” Mercantile Marine Minister George Voulga-rakis stressed Posidonia’s contribution to Greece’s economy, pointing out that the event “adds to our country in terms of responsibility and added value, which is extremely significant, since the eyes of the global shipping community during this week are fixed on Greece.”

Aegean registered an exceptionally strong presence at Posidonia 2008, the world’s premiere shipping event held in Athens every two years. The mari-time event, launched by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and Minister
of Mercantile Marine George Voulgarakis, provides an opportunity for the global shipping industry to display and view new products and services, discuss working relationships, and establish new business partnerships.
The impressive Aegean stand featured the new ALFA brand of lubricants that Aegean has developed for the marine sector. According to Aegean executives, the response was even greater than anticipated as this new line of maritime lubricants en-ters the market. Literally thousands of exhibition participants from around the globe had a chance to visit the Aegean stand and discuss the advantages and competitive edge of the Aegean line.
Equally impressive was the adjacent stand of HEC (Hellenic Environmental Cen-ter), an Aegean Group company involved in the protection of the marine environment; specifically in marine oil reclamation from ships arriving both Greece’s larger ports as well as smaller Greek Ports. The Hellenic Environmental Center stand was visited by more delegates than ever before, a reflection of the leading role HEC is taking in the industry and the importance the environment plays in today’s global marketplace.

GodfatherofRO-ROMAISTROS—MinisterofMercantileMarine,GeorgeVoulgarakis
SUmmeR 2008 AEGEAN NEWS
Minister of Mercantile Ma-rine George Voulgarakis was named godfather of
the ship and also present were Metro-politan Bishop of Piraeus Seraphim, who performed the traditional holy water blessing, Deputy Minister of Mercantile Marine Panayiotis Kam-menos, Vice President of Parliament A. Neratzis, General Secretaries of the Mercantile Ministry Mr. Vlahos and Mr. Joanos, Commandant of the Coast Guard Vice Admiral Theodore Rentzeperis, PASOK Party MPs Mr. G. Diamandidis and Ms. Eva Kaili, rep-
resentatives and businesspeople from the shipping and energy sectors, rep-resentatives of local religious, political and state authorities and associates and friends of the Melisanidis family.
Christening the ship, Minister Voulgarakis referred to the impor-tance the merchant marine has for the national economy, and to the great importance the new modern RO-RO tankers have for the Aegean and Ionian islands. The tankers will transport fuel and will help in the rationalization of the islands’ fuel market. Mr. Voulgarakis also empha-
sized Aegean’s commitment to the protection of the environment, since the RO-RO MAISTROS is a double hull tanker with the most advanced safety systems for the transportation and distribution of fuel.
Mr. Dimitris Melisanidis, in his speech, thanked the French Register Bureau Veritas (BV) and HSH Nord Bank, and he referred briefly to Aege-an’s history and to the importance it has for Aegean itself and to the significance the order of more RO-RO tankers like MAISTROS has for the islands.
The newly built RO-RO tanker, which bears the Greek flag, is the first of a series of tankers being built on behalf of Aegean and will be used to transort fuel to the Greek islands. These tankers are being built under the supervision of Bureau Veritas (BV), and in reality are floating, state of the art installations, which comply with all the rules for safety and for the protection of the environment, with features such as Bottom Loading, Vapour Recovery Unit, and they can carry six tanker trucks which will sup-ply fuel to the islands’ gas stations.
It should be noted that these tank-ers, which were built especially for the Greek Seas, can travel even under the most severe weather conditions, which secures the continuous and unob-structed supply of fuel to the islands.
With this initiative Aegean, which has developed a gas station network of 550 stations on mainland Greece, and with an 8.5% nationwide market share ranks fourth in the general gasoline sales and first among Greek private companies, aims to expand dynamical-ly its activities on the islands. The slo-gan “QUALITY FUEL AT COMPETI-TIVE PRICES” has established Aegean as the fastest growing company of the sector during the past decade.

The fuel products are loaded at a refinery into her cargo tanks and safe-
ly delivered to selected ports where, via her own or local road tankers, the fuel products are delivered to custom-ers (petrol stations, industry units,

hospitals, schools) in order to satisfy local demand.
“MAISTROS” is built under the most stringent, demanding and envi-ronment friendly requirements that allow no fuel oil vapour emissions vented into the atmosphere, neither during vessel’s loading at a Refinery (the vessel is fitted with a vapour emission control system) nor during the Truck Loading operations (the vessel is fitted with the most up-to-date, close type – cross over – bottom loading system).
“MAISTROS” Truck Loading Sys-tem design allows, with an accuracy of better than 0.1%, the simultane-ous loading of up to 5 products on a Road Tanker.
Vapour emissions control system, overfill protection, cross over truck loading and inerting arrangements provide a universal environment protection during both loading and discharging cargo and during filling of Road Tankers.
By using an ultra modern, sophis-ticated software package for manag-ing all fuel movements for the Truck Loading operations, “MAISTROS” can schedule the Road Tanker load-ing, produce Bills of Lading, maintain loading records (by truck, driver, de-livered product and quantity in every compartment, additive injected, load-ing time,… etc), and generate reports.
Vessels like “MAISTROS” will sig-nificantly improve life conditions on the Greek islands, especially where no fuel storage depots exist and fuel oil distribution via Ferry Boats is of-ten dangerous (especially in winter months) and difficult.
“MAISTROS” is also a reliable so-lution during summer time, when the Greek islands are “thirsty” for fuels, due to increased tourist activity.

ICS Petroleum has been supplying bunkers in Canada since 1984. In Vancou-ver, a coastal city and a major seaport located in British Columbia and named after Captain George Vancouver, a British explorer, ICS owns and operates 2
barges, the PT 25 and PT 36, both built in China. As the largest port in Canada, the largest port on the West Coast of North America by volume weight, and the fourth largest on the West Coast of North America by container TEU (twenty-foot-equivalent) measure, Vancouver is also the closest major North American port to Asia.
In Montreal, located in the southwest of the province of Quebec, ICS markets marine fuels and lubricants throughout the East Coast of Canada, specifically along the St. Lawrence Seaway, a system of canals that permits ocean-going vessels to transit from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes all the way to Lake Superior through the Welland Canal and the Great Lakes Waterway.
ICS was founded in 1984 by Justin Noice. Justin was born and raised in the English town of Redruth in Cornwall. He is a graduate of the Plymouth School of Maritime Studies with an Ordinary National Certificate in Nautical Sciences and a 2nd Mates Foreign Going Certificate. In 1986, he was joined by Gayle Lewis who had previously been with Gibson’s Shipbrokers in Montreal, to open the Montreal office.
In addition to Canada, ICS since 1990 has supplied fuel in Mexico. ICS has developed an efficient marketing and logistics plan to move fuel from the state owned Pemex terminals to the marine customer by barge and by truck. This re-gion is managed by Mr. Marc Gawthrop who has been with ICS since 1989 and who prior to joining ICS worked as a shipbroker in Mexico City.
ICS will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Aegean and will maintain its marketing and operation functions out of its offices in Vancouver and Montreal.
"We are very pleased to be the first member of Aegean's global service center network in North America," said Mr. Noice. "Given the worldwide strength of the Aegean brand and the significant financial resources available, we look forward growing our position in this important market area".
Dimitris Melisanidis, Aegean Group founder said: “The acquisition of ICS Pe-troleum is an important milestone for Aegean as it marks its first foray in North America. With ICS’s broad presence in Canada and Mexico, Aegean can now look to leverage its global brand name and capitalize on other opportunities in North and South America.”

Aegean’s newbuilding program in three shipyards, Fujian Southeast Shipyard, Sever-
nav Shipyard, and Qingdao Hyundai Shipyard is on-going at a fast pace and the vessels already delivered are con-tributing to the company’s growth in a qualitative fashion.
Five vessels, named after beautiful Greek islands, have been deployed in Singapore, Fujaira, and Gibraltar with excellent performance while the most recent ones, M/T SYROS and Ro/Ro Tanker MAISTROS, have just arrived in Antwerp and Piraeus respectively, where are expected to perform strongly.
Feedback from the local stations is indicative of the strong prospects aris-ing from the renewal and expansion of the Aegean fleet.
More specifically, the Singapore sta-tion is reporting some 214 bunker de-liveries by M/T MILOS in 11 months, 170 deliveries by M/T SERIFOS in seven months and 60 deliveries by M/T KIMOLOS in just four months, without disputes from the clients, ful-filling Aegean’s commitment for build-ing a strong business relationship with customers through quality services.
Similar heartening news comes from Fujairah. As expected, the deployment

of M/T KITHNOS supports the exist-ing Aegean fleet with great success, singularly affecting a sensational per-formance of 215 bunker deliveries in five months, in this important station with high demand for the most ef-ficient, environmentally friendly bun-kering systems in the country.
In line with the other two bunkering stations, reports from Gibraltar about M/T AMORGOS are likewise positive and promising. The new-build has im-
proved the day to day operational flex-ibility, as a result of her specific design to operate with three segregations.
But this is just the prelude. With more and more newbuilding vessels coming from the pipeline in an out-standing rate of about a vessel per month, business is expected to flourish both by increasing offered capacity and expanding the station network world-wide, securing company’s leading role in the markets it is involved.

This development inevitably puts pressure on the lubricants industry which in turn comes to cover, with sufficient and qualitaty lubricants, the increased and special lubricants needs of these engines.
Aegean, in cooperation with the biggest suppliers of basic oils and additives, created the VELOX series of products (for gasoline and light diesel engines) and VIGOR (for diesel engines). These lines were developed to cover all lubrication needs the new technology of these engines requires, as well as the demands of their manufacturers. The advantages the Aegean lubricants provide are multiple and differ, depending on their application.
The development of the Aegean products focused on covering the needs of the market, on the quality of products, using peak technology and offering con-sumers a reasonable cost point.
The great importance Aegean places on product quality is proven by the certification of its products by engine manufacturers, with the acquisition of of-ficial approvals by the manufacturers themselves (for example, VOLVO VDS-3), establishing Aegean lubricants as high technology quality lubricants.
The official approval of engine lubricants by manufacturers is a procedure which demands time and money and is given to products which the automo-bile manufacturers subject to specific and tough laboratory tests as well as to real world conditions, in order to establish that these products fully satisfy the requirements of their engines. Following the successful completion of the tests,

the relevant permit is issued by the automobile manufacturer, by which the use of Aegean lubricants in these engines is officially certified, while at the same time all the automobile technical maintenance manuals are being updated.
PASSENGERCARSANDAEGEANLUBRICANTSToday’s passenger cars stand out for the quality of construction as well as
their complexity, with an orientation toward the construction of new technol-ogy, environment friendly, high performance and cost efficient engines.
These technologically advanced engines have increased lubrication needs and consequently lubricants must match these demands without any possibility of failure.
Aegean responded to the challenge by developing AEGEAN VELOX syn-thetic lubricants , with which we succeed in having:w An engine clean from any kind of residue w Endurance of the lubricant at a great range of temperatures occurring in the
engine w High engine performancew Extreme endurance in difficult driving conditionsw Maximum wear protection w Less lubricant consumptionTHE RESULT: GREATER ECONOMY

Today’s professional heavy duty vehicles stand out for the high technology of their engines (Euro 4 & 5) with the manufacturers aiming to minimize emis-sions (SCR, DPF systems) and the contribution of theses engines to the protec-tion of the environment and to larger service intervals.
Today’s Euro 4 & 5 engines require increased lubrication qualities, more ad-vanced and finer liquid lubricants.
The AEGEAN VIGOR ULTRA series of products was especially developed to meet the high quality standards set by Euro 4 & 5 engine manufacturers and at the same time provide: w An engine clean from any kind of residue w Endurance of the lubricant to a great range of temperatures occurring in the
