Located in Northern Phoenix, the specific program of Fire Station 55 was very different from urban fire stations. The site is not densely populated and is mostly an untouched desert and mountain environment. Because of this, most calls answered by this station would be for hiker and water rescues or for wildfires.

The site was seen as pure, and the project hopes to both honor and respect the desert footprint in which it is located. The result is a minimalistic Fire Station that both extends to and is submerged by the site.

The plan is arranged by strong CMU walls that mark a division between the public + work program & the private living area of the firefighters. The private area is 4’ below grade and is enclosed by topography in order to achieve the sought-out cool and dark environment for the rooms of the firefighters. Their living area – in contrast, is still sunken in but is exposed to a courtyard and beautiful natural light, which creates a microclimate within the project.

The material of the station is CMU walls, a material that is very much of the earth and feels heavy, which are either left exposed or plastered white. The exposed CMU walls are the ones that extend out into the landscape and make the station feel like it is growing from it. The plastered white walls in contrast, are meant to reflect the beauty of the Arizona desert and the views around the site

APACHE WEDGE HOUSINGmulti family housing fall 2013

Page 5: andrea_berrios_portfolio

Located just a mile from Arizona State University’s (ASU) Tempe campus, this multi-family housing project attempted to embrace the college campus atmosphere and opportunities of the area. Some of these are the light rail, which runs across from it, the walkability and livability of the zone, and its fantastic location amongst market rate housing for students of the university.

The project sought for constant and real interaction between college students and to have them branch out from their different. This was done through the weaving of amenities within each floor such as recreational areas and services. It also achieved this by incorporating a central courtyard meant to make the building more introverted and promote both the visual connection as well as the interaction from this core out. This courtyard resembles a Spanish zaguan, or even a marketplace, a place of constant movement and activity.

The project also responds to community needs by including public amenities on the ground floor like a café, laundry service, bike share and repair, and other shops, which would be open to the public and bring people in to activate the central courtyard and bring life to an otherwise dead location.

This wood frame structural project was designed to be a perfect spot for relaxation and contemplation of the beauty in nature. Located in El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico, the tree house provides a minimized footprint within the natural environment while still experiencing a luxurious haven

You climb up and enter through the highest level, which becomes a public living area and viewing platform for the peak. As you make your way through the tree house, you begin to feel more enclosed and you descend unto the privacy of the bedroom and bathroom on the lower floor.

The design focuses on the views to the main points of interest; the highest peak of the rainforest on the northeastern side, and a waterfall on the south-ern side.

The roof design includes a water collection system through the roof on the highest level, down to the lowest level, into a bath and out of the structure, mirroring the waterfall that is adjacent to the site.
