    CHURCHES OF DREAMS

    Summary

The historical and ethnographic records about discovering sites of destroyed, buried and for-gotten churches by means of dreams have not so far encouraged researchers to explore this phe-nomenon further. Starting from these records and materials which he himself collected, the author examines this phenomenon in the context of certain religious buildings in the territory of Serbia. Exposed to destruction during the centuries-long Ottoman rule, temples shared the fate of the entire Serbian culture that, while losing the material base, remained spiritually present in the people and their unconscious. It turned out that the act of forgetting does not break off a deeper thread of cul-tural memory that is rediscovered through the dreams of individuals. For those who dreamed, these dreams were particularly important and often had an initiating character for the spiritual practice they observed.
