Boes e Merdules sono maschere della tradizione barbaricina, specificamente del paese di Ottana.Essi rappresentano l’antica lotta naturale tra la bestia e l’uomo.

«Su Boe» indossa sul volto una maschera fatta di pero selvatico che ha le fattezze di un bue (da qui il loro nome). È coperto di pelli di pecora e ha un grappolo di campanacci a tracolla.

«Su Merdule» (propriamente ˝guardiano dei buoi˝) è anche lui coperto di pelli e indossa una maschera di pero selvatico dalle fattezze del volto di un vecchio deforme.

Insieme rappresentano la lotta tra l'istinto animalesco e la ragione umana, infatti nelle esibizioni carnevalesche il Boe viene inseguito, frustato e catturato dal Merdule, ed insieme danno vita all'imitazione di furiose risse.

«Sa Ilonzana», una lugubre vecchietta vestita di nero, accompagna le maschere durante le sfilate. È sempre intenta a filare la lana e minaccia di tagliare il filo della vita se non le si offre da bere.

Si dice che il volto delle maschere del Merdule venga scolpito il più brutto possibile in modo da far paura al diavolo in persona e scacciare così la malasorte.

La stella a sei punte che viene scolpita sul volto della maschera del Boe è un simbolo di buon auspicio.

Quella delle sfilate in maschera, è una tradizione secolare portata avanti di generazione in generazione.
