Campo Grande is an old Portuguese parish of the municipality of Lisbon, with 10 514 inhabitants (2011). As a consequence of an administrative reorganization, made official on November 8, 2012 and that came into force after the municipal elections of 2013, the parish was dissolved, passing almost all of its territory to integrate a very wide version of the parish of Alvalade , With only a very small parcel of land next to the Second Circular to be transferred to the neighboring parish of São Domingos de Benfica. It is in the territory of this old parish that is located the University City of Lisbon, the largest campus of higher education in the country, and the University of Lisbon. It was the scene of the siege of Lisbon by the King of Castile following the crisis of 1383-85.
Field of the ceremony of review to the troops by King D. Sebastião, before the departure for Alcácer Quibir. From the late seventeenth century, it began to be occupied by some solar-iums, restaurants and ludic activities dedicated to the bohemians. From the retreats there are no more testimonies, but around the space there are still some palaces, such as the Pimenta palace, where the Museum of the City is housed, or the palace of the Count of Vimioso. In 1792, during the reign of D. Maria I, began to discuss the design of a garden in the fields of Alvalade, with the purpose of creating a wooded area that included a circuit for horse racing. The space returned to public functions, when Pina Manique had a public tour project for that area and that became one of the noble entrances of the city. The Promio Público served as a venue for fairs such as the Campo Grande Fair or the Nuts Fair that lasted 2 months.
