(by: Zulfatria bin Abdullah)From December 2011 to June 2012, The Centre for Graduate Studies (PPS) has joined the 12 series of educational exhibitions in the country. A number of exhibitions involved the joint participation of the Corporate Planning and Communications Office (PPKK). One of the objectives of PPS participation in these exhibitions is to promote graduate studies and make UTeM the first choice university to pursue postgraduate studies in the country. In addition, the participation in the exhibition was to increase the number of postgraduate students at UTeM. The exhibitions PPS participated in are shown in the table below: -
The feedback received from each exhibition is very encouraging. Most of the visitors who attended the PPS booth showed a keen interest to pursue a Master or Doctor of Philosophy at UTeM. There were also questions relating to the diploma and bachelor programmes at UTeM. There were also visitors who took the opportunity to ask more about the history of UTeM, number of current students and advantages of UTeM compared to other institutions of higher learning.
Thanks to the Planning and Corporate Communications Office (PPKK) for inviting PPS to join the exhibition. Hopefully, this cooperation would be sustained in the future. PPS also hopes that participation in the exhibition series will be able to help improve the image and brand of the graduate studies and UTeM in the community and target groups such as first degree graduates and professionals.

One of the principal goals of any universities is to make graduate studies accessible to the widest possible range of students either locally or internationally. Besides providing the higher degree education that is of high quality from the range of programs offered in the campus, many other methods are made feasible in reaching those students. Offshore program, is one of the innovative approaches whereby generally the graduate courses are offered remotely from the university campus via any suitable technologies and/or without formally scheduled lecturer-student interaction. The Centre for Graduate Studies, UTeM has taken a major step forward in adopting offshore approach in the Master by Taught Course program.
This offshore master by taught course program has been developed specifically for students who are highly motivated and interested to enhance their knowledge and progress in their career in the field of engineering and computer science without having an opportunity to take full-time study leave. Therefore the program is offered at designated study centre near or at the students’ own vicinity. Mode of registration is part-time and the classes are conducted during weekends.
The duration of the course is 2 years (4 semesters), or maximum of 5 years (10 semesters) with additional cost for every extended semester. A minimum of 42 credits is required for the students to complete the master degree with an achievement of a cummulative grade point average of at least 3.0. The 42-credit courses consists of about 12 modules categorized under university compulsory subject, course compulsory subject, course electives subject and a Master’s project. Each module carries 3 credits, and the assessment is by examinations and assignments. The Master’s project consisting 9 credits must be completed in two semesters and assess through a research proposal seminar and final project report.
Currently, the Centre for Graduate Studies are conducting 3 different programs at 4 different places as follows:
