Brand Description Delicious Denim is a brand, based on the image of a fruit as central theme. Its characteristics, such as naturalness, authenticity and juiciness are used in two different ways. Firstly, in a metaphoric way, standing for our ideal target customer: the mature, self‐confident and body‐conscious woman. Secondly, do we use the image of the fruit in a very literal way, by including fruit fibres and natural dyestuff, as well as the C2C principles in our production philosophy. We blend organic cotton and lyocell with fruit fibres such as coir, banana leaf and pineapple fibre so we can lower the harmful impact of the jeans production on the environment. By disassembling, recycling and biodegrading the worn out clothes, we guarantee a fully closed garment life‐cycle.  Collection Description Plum shapes fall/winter 2013 Silhouette: We acknowledge the fact that there is no “one size fits all” and that every body shape needs special consideration. A well thought through design with a fashionable cut is combined with innovative fabrics. The combination of different knitting techniques as well as heavy and light knits gives our knitwear section an irregular, but authentic and cool look. Round shapes and special finishings, but also details such as visible seams make the collection memorable.  Colors: For “Plum shapes f/w 2013” we chose a new and environmental friendly option for dyeing our garments, using only natural dyestuff from fruits.  Material: Taking environmental issues into consideration, Delicious Denim’s fabric choice is based on the Cradle2Cradle philosophy. The fabrics contain only natural fibres, such as soft and nicely draping lyocell or strong organic cotton. They are mixed with fruit fibres, whose main advantages are an extremely environmental friendly impact on the fashion industry and the pleasant sensation on the customer’s skin.  All in all, the collection is a tribute to the body‐conscious, self‐confident and authentic woman, giving her the chance to express herself through the right clothing ‐ clothing that doesn’t hide her, but underlines her personality.  

  Cradle2Cradle  In order to form a fully environment‐friendly garment life‐cycle, Delicious Denim starts its C2C philosophy already in the fibre cultivation using fruit fibres extracted from pine apple, coconut and banana. In fact, with this decision, Delicious Denim wants to support Fair Trade commerce in developing countries. This means that we ensure fair pay, good working conditions, health and safety for our workers. Consequently, it is important to mention that Delicious Denim uses natural pesticides, thus insects like ladybugs, grasshoppers and caterpillars to immensely lower pest applications.  Fiber processing and yarn manufacturing:   After the fibre manufacturing and processing, they will be blended with other biodegradable fibres, such as organic cotton and lyocell. This improves the yarn capacities such as strength and durability and a closed natural cycle can be maintained. The fruit fibres will mostly be blended with lyocell and organic cotton. We chose these fibres because of their various properties. The lyocell is ‐ like viscose ‐ a very smooth and light fabric, but it is much more eco‐friendly because its production doesn’t engage any toxic chemicals. The organic cotton, however, is very versatile. And its organic cultivation of the crops is also gentle to the environment in contrast to the conventional cotton. 

Dyeing process:   Even in its dyeing process Delicious Denim relies completely on nature. For most colours we will make use of natural dyestuffs that were extracted from fruits, vegetables, roots and plants. The advantages that come from natural dyeing are priceless. It is not only very sustainable in the dyeing process with a low water and chemical consumption, but it is also completely biodegradable when the garment is worn out. Opposing to chemical colours, the natural dyes are absolutely free of heavy metals, chemicals and therefore absolutely non‐toxic. Even though almost every colour can be achieved with fruit and vegetable dyes, Delicious Denim will focus on another colouring method for their blue jeans and garments. As blue jeans are a classic product, we don’t want to miss them in our assortment. But, as indigo is usually very harmful to the environment, we will work with an alternative that can save up to 92% water, 30% energy and produces 87% less cotton waste. The dyestuff was launched by the brand Clariant and is called “Advanced Denim”. It is an eco‐advanced, concentrated liquid sulphur dye that only requires one sugar‐based reducing agent instead of several harmful chemicals that are used in the conventional dyeing process. By engaging these two dyeing methods, Delicious Denim will not only be able to make major savings in resources such as water and energy, but it will also ensure that this very critical stage in the jeans production process is sustainable and gentle to the workers and the environment. Design:   Delicious Denim follows also in the design phase the “no waste” principle. Therefore we want to adapt Cad Cam programs in our production system. With computer aided prototyping, such as Modaris, fabric waste, transport costs and emissions can be reduced drastically. Furthermore, we are going to use the denim cutting leftovers for details or accessories on the garments. Selling:   The brand sells its products in recyclable shopping bags, produced from fabric waste. The robust and practical design attributes to the shopping bag’s multifunctional character, getting the maximum benefit from this product. Returning the used Delicious Denim product to the store forms the last part of the C2C life cycle. Depending on the condition of the product, it will be disassembled and either recycled or biodegraded. As with other waste management strategies, recycling saves resources.  Biodegrading the product has no harmful impact on the environment. In fact, it is quite the contrary: what Delicious Denim took from nature, will eventually be given back to nature and will serve as nutrition for microorganisms. This is also how the  cradle to cradle cycle closes.    Where do we produce the garments and why?  Delicious Denim chose Istanbul Turkey as its production place because of Istanbul’s great advantages. On the one hand, Istanbul is more expensive than producing the garments in China, but on the other hand Turkey offers on‐time‐delivery, a strong quality service and new technologies. Besides that Turkey respects the GDP and fair trade agreements.  

Furthermore, Turkey is specialised in producing organic cotton fabrics, has a strong wool industry and is the 3rd largest mohair producer in the world. In collaboration with our suppliers Delicious Denim started to develop fabrics that resulted in a selection of high quality organic weaves, blended with fruit fibres that we bought from China.  Our supplier in Istanbul:  Contact Information

However, everything else from the Delicious Denim collection can be delivered flat packed in plastic bags and these again in boxes. This is the cheapest and also fastest way of transport.  We will receive all of our products every 3 months per ship from Istanbul to the Netherlands. The production company will be responsible for the transport to the ship. Afterwards a logistics company will be responsible to bring our goods to the Delicious Denim store with a truck.  The first Delicious Denim shop is located in Rotterdam. We calculated the distance from Istanbul to Rotterdam and our way of transporting.

As you can see, transportation by air would be the fastest way, but it is also the worst option in terms of pollution. That is why Delicious Denim decided to transport their garments by ship. It is the best solution for quarterly shipments due to the low transport costs and the least risk of damage.  After our garments got shipped from Istanbul to Rotterdam, a truck will take the deliveries from the port directly to our shop.

Thinking about our replenishments, we decided to have just‐in‐time delivery (JIT). That means that we lower the costs by having small stocks. The delivered garments will be kept in the storage room in the back of the shop or displayed in the store until they are sold. We use an EDI system in our store. By using this optimised control and information system, Delicious Denim manages to receive the quarterly deliveries for a well organised and coordinated replenishment (fig1). This gives us the opportunity to work faster, to communicate better and again to lower the costs.

 Due to the fact that we work with special cotton fruit blends, we buy our fruit fibres in China.  We are going to source our yarns from a company in Henan, China that we chose, because they share our view on sustainability and are experienced in processing natural fibres. In the past they have worked mainly with banana, bamboo and PLA fibres, but upon request (and of course under the condition of an increased minimal order quantity), the company will source and process also other fibres, such as coir or piña. Delicious Denim is glad to have found a partner that is trustworthy and shares our enthusiasm for cradle to cradle.  Contact Information: Xinxiang Sunshining Textiles Co., Ltd.  4th floor, unit 7, Dongsheng Garden, No. 70, Xinfei Avenue, Economy and Technology Developing Zone, Xinxiang, Henan, China   Qualities and minimal order quantities:
