A SCENE MAGAZINE SPECIAL ISSUE
We’ve all been faced with various illnesses in our lives. For the most
fortunate among us, our illnesses are easily managed but for some
of us, they may be more challenging and complex. If not an illness,
perhaps you want to improve your image through enhancements or a brighter and
better smile. Or, is the four-legged member of your family having a difficult time? If
you are in need of a specialist, how do you know where to turn? Sure your general
practitioner will provide a referral, but should we really just rely on the opinion of one
doctor when it comes to our health and well-being or that of our pets? Research and
knowledge are key factors to choosing the best path.
SCENE Magazine is pleased to present Doctors on the SCENE, the second special
issue publication profiling area doctors and their specialties. While we can't
personally recommend each of them, we are happy to provide a forum for these
doctors to let you know more about them, their backgrounds and areas of expertise.
For easy reference, there is a directory in the back of this issue with complete contact
information for each doctor and health-related business featured in this issue.
One thing is certain, the doctors profiled in this issue are passionate, caring people
who are extremely knowledgeable in their various fields of specialty. Please enjoy
reading their profiles and considering them should your needs, or those of a friend
or loved one, lead you to require their specialized services.

Janelle Park, MDTampa Bay Cancer Center
Two premier cancer centers, Manatee Cancer Center and Tampa Bay Cancer Center - both
part of Florida Radiation Oncology Group - are in our community’s backyard. Both centers
work together to bring to our area the best-in-class cancer treatment in technology, as well
as provide premier emotional and physiological support in dealing with cancer.
Manatee Cancer Center is proud to be the area’s home of the Siemens Artiste. The
Artiste is the state-of-the-art linear accelerator and provides technology such as Image
Guided Radiation Technology (IGRT) and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).
This means common types of cancer may be treated with pinpoint accuracy resulting
in healthy tissue being spared and patients receiving less side effects than ever before.
“Image Guided Radiation Therapy is the biggest leap forward in the field of radiation
oncology in the last decade,” says Dr. Mary Koshy.
Dr. Mary Koshy, raised in Sarasota, attended Cornell University where she graduated

Suma Cum Laude. Dr. Koshy completed her internship and residency at Emory University
and served as Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine
in Houston for two years prior to returning to Florida; where she joined Florida Radiation
Oncology Group. She is board-certified in radiation oncology.
Dr. Janelle Park, also board-certified in radiation oncology, graduated from Ohio State
College of Medicine and completed her residency at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Park now serves on the American College of Radiology’s Guidelines and Standards
Committee, the American College of Radiology’s Physics Committee, and is a member of
the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology. She is the Medical Director of
the CyberKnife Cancer Center at Brandon Regional Hospital and Director of the Tampa
Bay Cancer Center Breast Cancer Care Clinic.
In addition to the Siemens Artiste, Manatee Cancer Center is further revolutionizing local
cancer care by providing stereotactic radiosurgery in 2012. Stereotactic radiosurgery
(SRS) is not surgery in the conventional sense. SRS is a non-invasive treatment that
uses pencil-thin beams of radiation generated by a specially modified linear accelerator
to treat tumors safely, effectively, and without any incisions. SRS is virtually painless and
frameless. It is performed on an outpatient basis without many of the usual risks and
side effects associated with surgery. In addition, patients may only need a few treatment
sessions versus the typical four - six week daily treatments.
This technology is also available with Dr. Janelle Park at the Brandon CyberKnife. “We are
so proud that Tampa Bay Cancer Center and Manatee Cancer Center are providing the
best in cancer technology that is currently available today,” said Dr. Park. “We want to not
only provide the latest in technology, but want to be team members with patients as they
battle their way through the disease.” This is why Tampa Bay Cancer Center has started
the ‘Breast Cancer Care Clinic.’
The Breast Cancer Care Clinic is a comprehensive clinic being held at the Sun City Center
office on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (813-633-5513) and at the Tampa Center on
Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (813-870-0162). “Patients hear about our state-of-the-
art treatment modalities and they sound so complicated,” said Dr. Park. “The science is
complicated. The doctors and staff are highly trained. But the result is simple – precise
and accurate targeting of tumors.”
Both centers host regular events and seminars designed to help patients become more
comfortable with the medical surroundings of treatment and to build friendships with
other cancer patients. Events such as the “Pink Martini Spa-tini”, “Monday Makeover”,
and “Masterclass at the House of Chanel”, attract patients, caregivers, and community
leaders to support nonprofit organizations and the overall mission of the centers. These
events provide patients and their caregivers with free makeovers, mini manicures,
massages, spray tanning, and wig/hair trimming.
Manatee and Tampa Bay Cancer Centers posts patient testimonials on its patient and
family friendly websites, giving everyone an opportunity to read for themselves what
success can look and feel like. Please visit www.myfloridacancer.com.

Dr. Jenifer BackSarasota Smile Design
As a child, Dr. Jenifer Back remembers experiencing a bit of dentistry fear which fortunately
culminated into mostly very positive experiences. These memories inspired Dr. Back to ensure
her patients not only get healthy smiles, but gave her a mission to take away the fear factor.
Patients are instantly at ease as they are greeted in her inviting, living-room style waiting area
painted in colors selected for their soothing properties. Instruments are hidden in custom
cabinets. If that’s not enough to soothe nerves, patients can relax with a massage chair and a
warm blanket or, if needed, oral sedatives are available. “I’ve taken it as a personal mission to build
relationships with patients so we know more about them and can meet their needs,” Dr. Back says.
While practicing in all areas with the goal of lifelong dentistry and healthy smiles for life,
she has a strong focus on cosmetic dentistry, including cosmetic bonding and veneers
as well as total smile makeovers. “Cosmetic dentistry is one of the most complex and
rewarding areas because when you are finished someone’s life is changed,” she says.
Dr. Back’s work has been recognized nationally in New Beauty magazine, the Woman’s
Dental Journal and PinkTooth.net. She also is a mentor/teacher of other dentists at the
Nash Institute for Dental Learning.
Cosmetic veneers and bonding are the most common procedures, particularly with
improvements in affordable bonding materials that are durable and more aesthetically
appealing. “If someone has been thinking of cosmetic dentistry, now’s the time because
it’s more affordable than ever,” Dr. Back says. Her approach to smile design is highly
customized allowing patients to have input on each tooth if they wish. “People sometimes
have dreamed of this their whole life,” she says. “Their smile is my canvas, and I want to
make their vision come true.”
“We’ve created a

here whether
it’s for a routine

Dr. Paul BrannanDermatology & Oculoplastic Consultants
Dr. Paul Brannan knows the benefits of focus whether in his Eyelid-Facial Plastics practice,
balancing time with his family or serving the community. As one of only 400 doctors who have
completed a two-year fellowship in oculoplastics, Dr. Brannan is an expert on the eyelids, eye
sockets and tear ducts. He also has a special proficiency in facial reconstruction, particularly
following skin cancer surgery. “I like to concentrate and excel in my area of expertise,” he
says. “Our patient satisfaction is very high.”
As part of a thriving practice with his dermatologist wife, Dr. Heidi Anderson, Dr. Brannan
likes being able to offer comprehensive care to skin cancer patients in particular. “My wife can
diagnose cancerous lesions, our associate can do MOHS surgery if required, and immediately
after,I can perform the surgery to ensure everything functions properly and is aesthetically
pleasing,” he says. “It is convenient for our patients, and we enjoy helping them through the
whole process of treatment and recovery.”
Dr. Brannnan also performs facial cosmetic procedures. “Everything I do is minimally invasive, done
with proven products, and customized for a natural look,” he says. “It’s always rewarding when
an individual comes to us who has been referred by a patient who has had a good experience.”
With two young children at home and an equally dedicated and busy wife, Dr. Brannan strives
to put his family first without sacrificing patient care, whether it is organizing schedules to drop
off and pick the children up from school or finding the time to coach soccer and baseball. He
and Dr. Anderson also are active with a variety of nonprofits, including co-chairing Children
First’s gala fundraiser. “We enjoy working together and helping as much as we can,” he says.

Erick Calderon, MD, FACC, FSCAILakewood Cardiovascular Consultants
Motivated by his early training with a brilliant Nobel Prize-winning cardiologist, Dr. Erick Calderon
has played a pivotal role in bringing advanced technology and techniques to Lakewood
Ranch Hospital’s cardiology program. Most recently, he has launched a radial artery program
for cardiac procedures, which has many advantages over the traditional pathway to the heart
through the femoral artery in the groin. “Advancements in technology now allow us to insert a
catheter into the radial artery in the wrist for complex cardiac interventions,” said Dr. Calderon,
who is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, nuclear cardiology and
interventional cardiology. “Patients can sit up immediately after surgery, require no bed rest
and have reduced risks of complications.”
Following his passion to make more minimally-invasive procedures available to his cardiac
patients, he also brought carotid artery angioplasty to the hospital, at first for high risk patients.
Because of the phenomenal success rate, the procedure is now FDA approved for all patients.
Dr. Calderon also instituted the Crosser catheter program that allows ballooning and stenting a
completely blocked artery that may have previously required a more extensive bypass operation.
Recently, Lakewood Cardiovascular Consultants launched a venous treatment program offering
advanced radiofrequency ablation to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency. The
treatment is done in the office under local anesthesia. “Technology brings us new tools that
help patients undergo safer procedures successfully, and I’m proud to help bring those here
for the treatment of our patients,” Dr. Calderon says. He credits his training with cardiologist
Dr. Bernard Lown, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, for inspiring him. “He changed my
life and direction in medicine. I felt compelled to do something better,” he says. “Nothing
is more fulfilling than to see happy patients recovering well, quickly and comfortably.”

Dr. Sean Castellucci, D.O.Urology Partners
Dr. Sean Castellucci practices general urology, but delves into each area of his practice with a
specialist’s enthusiasm. Dr. Castellucci is one of only a handful of urologists in Manatee County
proficient in the use of the DaVinci® robotic surgical system for prostate cancer treatment, which
lowers blood loss, allows for shorter hospital stays, and accelerates recovery rates. It also has
the potential to lower the incidence of the side effects men fear, including erectile dysfunction and
incontinence. “We are dedicated to our patients and do everything possible to make sure we cater
to their needs,” he said. “Because we talk about very intimate subjects, we want to be sure their
questions are answered, and they are satisfied with the attention and care they have received.”
Additionally, Dr. Castellucci educates patients about the importance of hormone replacement
therapy to overall health. “Testosterone not only is critical to sexual function and energy levels,
it also plays a crucial role in cardiovascular health for men, just as estrogen does for bone
disease in women,” he says.
With this more holistic view of his profession, he looks not only to address symptoms, but to
resolve the underlying condition, such as incontinence in women. “This important issue is not
looked at as much as it should be,” Dr. Castellucci says. “We incorporate what is on the forefront
of treatment like biofeedback, pelvic floor therapy and medication. It’s not always about surgery.”
His practice also helps patients with kidney disease, including cancer; treatment of kidney
stones, which encompasses how to prevent them, and incontinence in men and women. “I want
my patients to know that I am comfortable discussing a vast spectrum of personal and private
health concerns, not limited by gender.” Dr. Castellucci says. “I feel I am showing them respect by
taking the time to understand what they are going through and treating them compassionately.”

Dr. Anne ChauvetCritical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota
As a veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon, Dr. Anne Chauvet delves into her patient’s most
complex systems, routinely performing spinal surgeries to help paralyzed patients and brain
surgery to remove tumors. Because advancements in veterinary medicine have made these and
other life-prolonging treatments more widely available, Dr. Chauvet saw the need for a high-tech
intensive-care unit staffed with critical care specialists to heal the most critically ill or injured pets.
In 2010, she founded Critical Care & Veterinary Specialists of Sarasota (CCVSS) as an advanced
24-hour emergency clinic providing a level of care similar to an intensive care unit (ICU) for
humans. “Until then, the closest similar unit was in Tampa, which is too far to help seriously ill or
injured pets. Losing a pet can be like losing a member of the family,” Dr. Chauvet said, “and that
has fueled demand for high-quality, highly-advanced life-prolonging treatments.”
In addition to being one of only about 20 centers worldwide that offers dialysis for pets, CCVSS
has an in-house MRI and two high-tech operating suites with microscopes designed for human
neurosurgery that allow advanced surgical and other treatments to save the lives of pets who
may not have survived previously, said Dr. Timothy Schneider, who makes surgical services
available at CCVSS 24 hours a day. Sophisticated diagnostic and life-support equipment and
advanced training allow Dr. Stacy Armstrong, who is a board certified emergency and critical
care specialist, to treat and continually monitor pets along with emergency room professionals
Dr. Benjamin Gage Furtado and Dr. Lara de Courtivron.
“Pets have become members of our families,” Dr. Armstrong said. “Our goal with these inno-
vations is to provide the highest level of compassionate expert care for the health of our patients,
the emotional health of our clients, and the professional health of our veterinary community.”

Dennis Corona, DDSBee Ridge Dental & Manatee Dental
Being willing to put himself in his patient’s shoes has encouraged a culture of compassionate
customer care and has allowed Dr. Dennis Corona to grow his dental practice significantly
despite a less-than-robust economy.
Having practiced in the two county area for 18 years, Dr. Corona founded his own practice
in Manatee County seven years ago to offer comprehensive dental care. He now has to two
locations there, Manatee Dental at College Plaza and Manatee Dental East, and this year
added a third location, Bee Ridge Dental in Sarasota County.
“If you are going to have a good dental practice, offering excellent dentistry is, of course,
required. However, you also have to understand the things that can prevent people from
receiving the dental care they need,” Dr. Corona says. “We know people can be very stressed
with a lot of fears. They may be afraid that their visit will be painful or that they will need
expensive work and not be able to afford it. It’s important to get them to open up about these
things so they can be addressed.”
The three locations offer a broad range of services, including preventive dentistry, such as
exams and cleanings as well as fillings, root canals, implant restoration, crowns and bridges.
Cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening and cosmetic bonding also are available. Dr.
Corona emphasizes the important role good oral health plays in patients’ overall health and
strives to encourage them to get regular checkups by making the whole experience less
stressful with quieter drills and using the latest techniques to make dentistry as pain free as
possible. “If people ask what the secret to our success is,” he says, “I say it is our focus on
patient care. We continually look for ways to make our patients more comfortable.”

Michael J. Dattoli, MDRichard A. Sorace, MD, PhDDattoli Cancer Center & Brachytherapy Research Institute
In 2011 Dattoli Cancer Center celebrated its 10th anniversary in
Sarasota, reaching a milestone few privately owned specialty
medical centers see in this era of changing healthcare delivery
and challenging economics. In fact, the center is one of very few
in the world that remains as a prostate cancer only center.
What this means to the men fortunate enough to choose this
center for prostate cancer treatment is that they have access to
all the resources of a world class center, right in their backyard.
There is no other place – no matter where you look – that can
equal the success rate of Dr. Michael Dattoli and his partner of 25
years, Dr. Richard Sorace, or match their suite of unique prostate
specific technology.
Together these two specialists have treated and tracked more
than 17,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The nonsurgical
treatment protocol they have designed is individually calibrated to
each man’s anatomy and disease profile, with intent to defeat the
cancer while leaving the man healthy and whole after treatment.
Quality of life following prostate cancer is a major concern
considering that most patients have many potential years of life
ahead of them.
Advice from the Dattoli team begins with taking time to fully
research your options. Today there are at least 10 different
approaches to treating this most common non-skin cancer
in men. And some of these approaches have several different
variations. It is a complicated field but this cancer is usually slow
growing and the patient has time to investigate the entire list. The
Dattoli team believes the best treatment for you may not be what
your diagnosing physician recommends. They advise you to talk
to as many patients as you can about their decision and if they
would do the same thing again. In-depth information is available
on the Dattoli website: www.dattoli.com.

Harry B. Grabow, MDSarasota Cataract & Laser Institute
During the course of his career, Dr. Harry Grabow, founder of Sarasota Cataract & Laser
Institute, has helped more than 20,000 people improve their quality of life through lens
replacement surgery. Whether suffering loss of vision from cataracts or desiring to live without
glasses and contact lenses, Dr. Grabow specializes in bringing their world into clearer focus
with leading edge technology and techniques.
“After surgery, 85 percent of patients no longer have to wear eyeglasses for far or near vision
depending on the type of implant they choose,” he says. “The surgery itself takes only 10 minutes
and is done painlessly without needles or stitches.” Over the past 30 years, Dr. Grabow has stayed
abreast of the latest techniques by participating in more than 20 FDA studies and pioneering the
use of lens advancements like accommodative intraocular lenses that can focus near or far and
multifocal lens implants that work like trifocals for near, intermediate and farther distances.
Although he performs more than 1,000 surgeries annually, the practice retains a personal
approach with patients. “Our staff is well trained and cordial. We don’t treat patients like a
number,” Dr. Grabow says. “We have experience with all the lens implants, and I get to know
what every patient’s interests are so we can help them choose the correct surgery for them.”
In fact, Dr. Grabow has lectured and performed surgeries around the world to teach other
physicians the latest advancements in techniques and technology. His Institute also hosts
visiting surgeons who travel from across the globe to study his techniques.
Using his success as a way to help others, Dr. Grabow regularly sets aside an afternoon
dedicated to free cataract screenings, and he accepts Medicaid patients and those from free
clinics. “I like making significant improvements in people’s lives,” he says.

pleasing results. “You notice the bad facelifts and overdone fillers, but you don’t notice the
good ones, and that’s exactly what we want,” said Dr. Braun Graham.
All four surgeons are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and focus
on cosmetic procedures, including eyelids, fat grafting, face lifts, mini lifts, breast and body
surgery, mommy makeovers and Brazilian buttocks lifts. “We focus on patients’ needs first,”
says Dr. James Schmidt. “Everyone comes in with a different canvas, and our brush strokes
are a little different for each person.”
Patients also have the advantage of an on-site surgical center with two operating suites that
meets all the regulatory requirements of an ambulatory care center. “The center was designed
to be most effective for cosmetic surgery. It is equipped to handle emergencies that occur rarely,
and it is a convenience for patients,” said Dr. David Mobley. “Plus, our staff has tremendous
specialized expertise. We work well as a team and provide a nice continuity of care.”
The center also offers educational seminars and has extensive information on its website
aimed at ensuring patients have the data necessary to make wise decisions. “I spend a lot of
time with patients to understand what they are trying to achieve and talking with them about
what I can do,” said Dr. Scott Engel. “If I stand on my principles, that helps me get great
results. I always ask ‘would I do this if the person was a member of my family’?”

Jeff Hudson, DCTodd Hudson, DCHudson Chiropractic Wellness Center
Drs. Jeff and Todd Hudson can’t hide their passion for their
work as chiropractic physicians. Not that they’d want to.
Growing up with a father who founded his chiropractic practice
in Sarasota 52 years ago, both have experienced the health-
restoring benefits of chiropractic medicine. “When I was born,
I was given two months to live because of asthma,” Dr. Jeff
says, “but my Dad loved me so much, he worked on me every
day. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that.”
Dr. Todd, a talented athlete who played football and professional
baseball, also benefitted from his father’s chiropractic expertise.
“I always knew I was going to follow his footsteps,” he says,
“because of how chiropractic helped me with backaches,
elbow tendonitis, headaches and stomach problems.” Today,
the brothers help others with numerous health issues including
neck, shoulder, back and leg pain, bladder/bowel issues,
plantar fasciitis, acid reflux, whiplash, slipped discs and even
sore throats and ear infections. Once their initial condition
is corrected, patients are encouraged to take the necessary
steps to improve their overall health whether that is additional
treatments to correct underlying causes of the problem or
therapies like massage, hydrotherapy and advanced laser
treatments to speed healing.
The two physicians also provide nutritional education,
exercise programs and open lines of communication. “We
use a gentle approach, and I like to communicate with
my patients,” Dr. Todd says. “I consider myself a primary
physician. If people come to me first, and I can’t help them,
I often can steer them on the right path.” Dr. Jeff concurs. “I
always want to treat people with compassion and let them
know that there is hope,” he says. “We help people avoid
surgery and pills with their side effects. Your body will heal
itself if you let it.”
Two brothers carry on a long
family legacy of eliminating pain
and restoring patients’ health
through their gentle approach to
chiropractic medicine and emphasis
on natural approaches to wellness.

Brian C. James, MD, PAPain Medicine Consultants
Dr. Brian James and Pain Medicine Consultants believe that life is full of
pain — however, the suffering is optional. With more than 16 years of
experience treating chronic pain, Dr. James utilizes a compassionate
and thorough multidisciplinary approach to pain management.
Board certified in anesthesiology and interventional pain
management, Dr. James underwent his fellowship training at
the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. While there, he wrote and
completed patents on two separate medical devices for pain
management. (Both have been granted U.S. patents.)
Dr. James and his staff use a multi-disciplinary approach including
hydrotherapy, acupunture, physical therapy, bioelectrical therapy,
nerve blocks, psychological and/or psychiatric counseling,
and implantable devices (such as spinal cord stimulators and
intrathecal pumps). If necessary, Dr. James is able to burn nerves
that carry pain signals, which in some cases eliminates the pain
altogether. With this approach, Dr. James is able to increase the
functioning and quality of life for the majority of his patients. In
many cases, he is able to alleviate their pain altogether.
Pain Medicine Consultants offers treatments and relief for a long
list of chronic painful disorders, including facet syndrome, sciatica,
complex regional pain syndrome (RSD), lower back and neck pain,
herniated disk, failed surgery syndrome, shingles/postherpetic
neuralgia, neuropathic (nerve damage) pain, cancer pain, arthritic
spine disease, arachnoiditis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Dr. James and his team gladly accept Medicare and most health
insurance plans, as well as auto accidents/personal injury and
workers compensation. If you’re suffering from chronic pain, the
specialists at Pain Medicine Consultants urge you to visit their
office. The goal of Dr. James and his team is to improve your
quality of life by providing you with safe, long-term pain relief.
Non-narcotic options are available.
Using both non-invasive, and if
necessary, invasive techniques,
Dr. James has been able to increase
a majority of his patient’s level of
functioning. In many cases, he is able
to alleviate their pain altogether.

Peter G. Livingston, MDMacula and Diabetic Eye Center
Working from a new facility with leading edge technology, Dr. Peter Livingston preserves
the eyesight of those with retinal disorders that put them at risk of losing their sight. While
he is well-qualified as a board certified ophthalmologist who has specialized in the retina
for 12 years, it is how he delivers patient care as much as the high quality of care he
provides that is important to him. “People often come to me who don’t really understand
what is happening to them, so communicating clearly is really important,” Dr. Livingston
says. “I strongly believe in providing the highest quality care with compassion and always
following the golden rule. If I wouldn’t do a treatment for a loved one, I wouldn’t do it for
a patient.” He says he is happy to provide a second opinion if someone is uncertain of a
diagnosis or treatment plan.
Dr. Livingston specializes in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, detached retinas,
and retinal vascular disorders. He is the only ophthalmologist here who performs in-office
vitrectomies, removing the gel within the eye when floaters that are common in everyone’s
vision become severe enough to prevent people from performing daily tasks. He also uses
his skills to help the community, providing pro bono services to the indigent at Manatee
Memorial Hospital and teaching at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
Having moved to Sarasota to be close to his wife’s family, Dr. Livingston invested in
leading edge equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of retinal disease, and he
stays current on new treatments and procedures. “Treatment of diabetic eye disease
is changing rapidly with excellent results,” he says. “We have the ability to treat with
any leading edge therapy, but my approach tends to be conservative. I believe in doing
whatever is most effective.”

Alissa Shulman, MD, FACSSovereign Plastic Surgery
Using her artistic training and medical skills as a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Alissa
Shulman sculpts the human form bringing out the unique beauty of each patient. Whether
performing breast reconstruction following cancer surgery or helping someone improve their
overall body shape, the focus is on the patient’s own unique circumstances and desires. “I try to
see what they would like changed the most, and it’s different for everyone,” Dr. Shulman says.
Except for skin cancer, she primarily works with patients from the neck down with particular
emphasis on breast reconstruction and overweight patients desiring body sculpting. “I
understand the plight of the overweight female and mother. I’ve gone through that,” Dr.
Shulman says. “I work with a lot of healthy, active, full figure women who have been ignored
and told not to do anything until they lose weight. We can get a much better body shape that
looks smoother under clothes and gives them a waistline.”
In the area of breast reconstruction, she has been working with leading edge fat grafting to
improve post-surgical appearance. “I do a lot of breast reconstruction and we’ve seen good
results,” Dr. Shulman said. “The whole point of reconstruction is to get people past what they
went through, which is difficult if they still see reminders of it.”
When Dr. Shulman moves her practice to a larger office in January, she will offer the area’s
only fitness program for post-surgical patients with exercise specifically adapted to their
individual surgery. “This gets them back to working out sooner,” she says. “They work with
a trainer under a doctor’s supervision. I worked on them surgically and can help develop a
program tailored to their situation. Patients look better after surgery, and this helps them
continue to look better and feel better about themselves.”

very individual.

David A. Sugar, MD, FAAOSORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON, Sugar Orthopaedics
Whether he’s helping earthquake victims in Haiti or getting to know his local patients, Dr.
David Sugar never forgets what it’s like to be a patient. Having had eleven orthopedic
surgeries, the athletic Dr. Sugar has definitely been there. “I wanted to be a doctor since I
was 13 because I thought it was neat to be able to help people,” Dr. Sugar says. “By the
time I started medical school, I had six orthopedic operations, and that got me interested
in this area of medicine.” With five additional surgeries including a knee replacement this
year, he says he can empathize with patients. “I’ve been in their shoes many times,” he
says. “It’s good for physicians, especially surgeons, to be patients once in awhile. It keeps
things in perspective.”
Working out of Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Doctors Hospital, Dr. Sugar treats all parts
of the musculoskeletal system. His surgical procedures focus primarily on the knee and
shoulder. Dr. Sugar also devotes about one-third of his practice to Pediatric Orthopaedics.
While his practice has grown significantly, he still serves everyone with the patient-focused
care of a small practice. To ensure his patients receive the highest quality care, he recently
completed the rigorous two-year process to renew his board certification. “In medicine, big is
not necessarily better,” he says. “My philosophy is to treat everyone as if they were our family.
That’s one reason we always explore nonsurgical treatments first.”
Aside from his busy professional life, he is devoted to spending time with his wife, Stephanie,
who also is his office administrator, and their three young sons. Dr. Sugar also has helped
bring medical care to those suffering in Haiti, making five trips to the devastated country in 18
months. “It is a big part of my professional and spiritual development,” he says. “It is such a
blessing to be able to help.”
“Even after 15
years, I still come
to work every day
humbled by the fact
that people let me
help them in their
time of need.”

Dr. John SylvesterRADIATION ONCOLOGIST, Urology Partners
Thanks to the pioneering work of board certified radiation
Oncologist Dr. John Sylvester, men diagnosed with prostate
cancer now have minimally-invasive options with high cure rates
and fewer side effects. Dr. Sylvester was one of three Seattle
physicians who, in the mid-1980s, brought ultrasound guided
brachytherapy to North America. They implanted tiny radioactive
seeds that deliver radiation to the prostate with minimal damage
to surrounding tissues. In the 1990’s he initiated Image-Guided
Radiation Therapy (IGRT) in Seattle, which allows increased
precision for IMRT, and in 2009 co-authored the white paper on
4-d real time prostate cancer IGRT
“We remain very active doing research protocols using the
newest technologies” said Dr. Sylvester. “Right now, we are the
only practice in Florida using the new THINStrand brachytherapy
seed, which I helped to create with Oncura/General Electric. The
THINStrand is 30 percent thinner (minimizes trauma for fewer
side effects), but provides better dose to the prostate.”
Dr. Sylvester has conducted more than 3,500 brachytherapy
procedures on patients from around the world, has trained
thousands of doctors, and is one of four doctors who wrote the
current prostate cancer guidelines for the American Brachytherapy
Society. He is the first physician to publish 15-year prostate
cancer outcomes with radioactive seed implant monotherapy
(International Journal Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics,
Oct. 2011). Dr. Sylvester is part of a select group of specialists
on the U.S. Radiation Oncology Advisory Board working to bring
a new “game-changing” radio-isotope, Alpharadin, for metastatic
prostate cancer to the U.S.
Reflecting his published success rates (up to 99.1%, Cancer 2011)
and minimal side effects, Dr. Sylvester says his facility has a very
upbeat atmosphere. “I see patients every week while they are
here for treatment,” he says, “and those treatments are showing
great cure rates and quality of life outcomes, so it’s definitely a
win-win situation.”

Jennifer Trent, MD, FAADAmerican Dermatology Associates, Inc.
Based on her wealth of medical and cosmetic dermatology experience, Dr. Jennifer Trent is a bit zealous about
letting people know that taking skin for granted really is not an option in Sarasota. The good news, however,
is that with today’s sophisticated cosmetic procedures it is possible to turn the clock back and undo unsightly
damage caused by years of inadequate protection. “People have to understand how fragile the skin is. You
have to protect it from the harsh sun,” Dr. Trent said. “Unlike up North, in Florida the sun will get you every
day of the year.” Her practice, American Dermatology Associates, Inc., offers a wide selection of procedures,
including dermal fillers and advanced laser treatments along with microdermabrasions and micro-peels to
refresh the skin. “I find that baby boomers have a very young mindset, but the sun is ageing them faster than
they feel,” Dr. Trent said. “We have so many great procedures, you don’t have to tolerate brown spots or cover
up broken veins with make-up. We can even get rid of those angry 11 lines between your brows.”
Medical dermatology also is an important part of her practice, such as treatment of rashes, moles and skin
cancer, including precision Mohs surgery. Dr. Trent has received numerous awards for her work and has
published more than 40 articles and published six book chapters in dermatologic text books on surgery
and wound care. She also is a strong advocate of extremely thorough skin checks. “It is very important
because you never know where a skin cancer could be,” she says.
Dr. Trent relishes both aspects of her practice, medical and cosmetic. “I like the fact that we also treat
people medically. Most of my cosmetic patients came to me first medically,” she said. “We want to make
them look as good as they feel.”
“When patients come here,
they get the best care possible.
They’re in the best hands. I
like to think we’re the gold
standard in skin care and
dermatology.”

Heidi Ward, DVMGulfcoast Veterinary Oncology and Internal Medicine
When pet owners on the gulf coast realize their best friend faces a battle with cancer, they
turn to Dr. Heidi Ward for comfort, compassion, quality care and an honest answer to their
many questions. Dr. Ward has been passionate about caring and befriending animals her
whole life. “I can remember the exact day Laddie, my first dog, got sick. I felt so helpless
that I knew I had to dedicate my life to veterinary medicine.” That passion has led to a career
that has involved participation in many clinical trials, multiple publications and numerous
awards including the Robert Brodey Award from the Veterinary Cancer Society and the
Gold Star Award from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association. She was one of the few
chosen in the country to partner with Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York to try a
new melanoma vaccine with the potential of helping people down the road. Dr. Ward is also
a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
“Oncology/Internal Medicine is not the easiest specialty in animal care but for me it’s the
most intimate because it requires a great deal of diagnoses that are unique to each patient.”
Dr. Ward uses some of the same technology available for diagnosing human illnesses. “My
clients and patients are counting on me to deliver accurate and timely treatments. We develop
a close relationship with all of our patients because it is crucial in being able to constantly
monitor and modify each treatment as necessary.” That closeness is one of the reasons why
Gulfcoast Veterinary Oncology and Internal Medicine is a unique personalized practice.
Dr. Ward also feels passionately about animals outside of the office and donates her skills to help
local animal rescue organizations and with many fundraisers. “Sometimes I provide medicine,
sometimes treatment and often money and time, but who wouldn’t when there are so many
pets without people. They can always count on me to be their watchdog,” says Dr. Ward.

Jonathan Yunis, MDCenter for Hernia Repair
Nationally known as a specialist in hernia repair, Dr. Jonathan Yunis is the only surgeon in the
region who focuses his practice exclusively on this seemingly simple operation. While hernia
repair is a common surgery, it has a relatively high rate of complications and recurrences,
some of which can be serious or even disfiguring. Dr. Yunis has devoted the past 12 years
of his professional life to perfecting this procedure, which also can involve abdominal wall
reconstruction. He has worked with hernia specialists throughout the world in an effort to
develop expertise in the variety of surgical approaches that are innovative for hernia and
abdominal wall repair. In addition to his local practice, Dr. Yunis frequently treats patients
from all over the country. His customized approach and use of minimally invasive techniques
allow for quicker postoperative recovery and considerable reduction in post surgical pain. A
hernia is a weakening of the muscles of the abdominal wall. When such a weakness occurs,
a defect forms much like a gap, and runs the risk of entrapping delicate structures from within
the abdominal cavity. A bulge or fullness of the groin or abdominal wall appears and is often
painful and tender. Hernias occur in virtually all age individuals, from infants to the elderly, and
in both men and women.
The early portion of Dr. Yunis’ career was focused on the specialty of vascular surgery, but
he has always had a passionate interest in hernia surgery due to its anatomic complexities.
His vascular surgery experience in repairing delicate blood vessels has contributed to his
confidence and success in repairing high risk hernias. “Doing vascular surgery,” he states,
“has made me a better surgeon.” Dr. Yunis performs over 500 hernia repairs and abdominal
wall reconstructions a year. “I’ve gained an extraordinary understanding and appreciation of
the variation and complexity of hernia problems,” he states. “My extensive experience allows
for a more efficient and gentler surgery, resulting in a happier patient.”
