Fellowship Project Synopsis

Private Pay Long-Term Care: A Sensible Option to Consider

This project discusses private pay long term care against the realities and challenges of the present long term care system, and in doing presents a number of considerations for those organizations wishing to explore this option. Many Canadians may not understand or appreciate the existing gaps in current services, and will likely be shocked with that reality as they or their family members age and enter into its system. Whether the argument is financial related to funding, or philosophical related to consumer choice, an increased private pay model is worthy of consideration to address these challenges. It is critical for private pay operators to communicate the realities of the present publically governed system, address issues and myths within the private pay option, and then promote their services against the backdrop of our present long term care system reality.

While governments may place an emphasis on home care services throughout Canada, options for those unable to support themselves within their own homes will continue to exist. Canadians should consider private pay services as one of those options. Costs related to healthcare will increasingly shift to individuals as government fiscal realities restrict funding, further pressuring the public healthcare system. Regardless of one’s philosophical opinions related to private pay long term care or private healthcare in general, it is essential for Canadians and healthcare organizations to understand the present realities of our current system and begin planning for a realistic future.

Certified Health Executive Program (CHETM)

The College values and upholds the high standard of lifelong learning and offers Canadian health leaders the CHE (Certified Health Executive) designation. This designation signifies the commitment to health leadership that our members possess.

Over 50% of College members are currently certified. Achievement of the designation is the first step towards becoming a Fellow of the Canadian College of Health Leaders, the College’s highest level of professional recognition.

Members can earn the CHE designation through the College’s three year e-learning program, which includes a flexible, self-driven schedule and peer reviewed papers. The CHE designation demonstrates dedication to the profession; indicates knowledge of the latest health care leadership practices; exemplifies commitment to lifelong learning; is a mark of professionalism; and is one of the most preferred criteria used in the recruitment of health leaders by an increasing number of employers.

Professional Standards Council

The CHE Program is administered by the Professional Standards Council which provides strategic directions for the professional designation programs (CHE and FCCHL), the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program, leadership competencies, and professional leadership programs for certified and noncertified members. The Council ensures high professional standards and continuous quality improvement for the professional designation programs.

* CHETM is a trademarked program of the Canadian College of Health Leaders.
