Introduction to GPON technology
• GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology is cutting-edge solution to deploy broadband access networks in private and business sectors of the market. This newtechnology has the advantages in comparison with its nearest competitor MetroEthernet. The basic topology of GPON network is “tree” with passive optical branching. The compactpassive couplers of optical power (splitters), not requiring additional power and maintenance, are installed in intermediate nodes of “tree”.
• Unlike standard optical MetroEthernet networks, this technology brings an opportunity toapply one transreceiver (OLT), up to 64 terminal units (ONT) per one fiber for connectionand passive units of optical signal division, and as a result the large part of optical fiber issaved. Downstream from OLT is transmitted at 1490nm with 2.54Gbit/s, upstream from all ONT at 1310nm with 1.25Gbit/s.
What is PON?

PON consists of OLT (Optical Line Terminal), ONT (Optical Network Terminal), FDN (Fiber Distribution Network) and POS (Passive OpticalSplitter) – the main component is FDN
Encryption
GPON equipment supports 128-bit encryption AES (Advanced Encryption Standard)
algorithm.
• GPON technology provides an economy based on:- cabling infrastructure, due to decreased total length of optical fiber, as only one fiber is used in segment from central node to coupler;
- reduction in the number of optical transmitters and receivers in central node and deletion of active units inintermediate branch points of flow to client.
• Use of ITU-T G.984.x standards will allow to significantly cut cost of equipment in prospect; Maximum transfer
rate: up to 2.4Gbit/s (Downstream) and 1.25Gbit/s (Upstream)
• Supply of QoS by means of 802.1p/TOS. It is possible to apply the strict mechanisms of traffic prioritizationthrough the use of eight dedicated queues for every type of traffic. These mechanisms allow to provide suchservices as VoIP or VoD with guarantee of quality;
• Connection of 64 subscriber units to PON port within a radius of 20 km and effective optical fiberutilization;
• Support of DBA mechanism - Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation in accordance with subscribers requirements and presence of free band in PON “tree”. Thus, the subscribers which are provided with guaranteed bandwidth fordata transfer (for example, 1Mbit/s) can receive an operational rate up to 2.5Gbit/s, if a free band in PON“tree” is incompletely used (similar to UBR traffic in ATM);
• Streaming video support (IGMP Snooping); Easy setup and maintenance.
