Ihre Eigenschaften bzw. Axiome müssen widerspruchsfrei mit der Analysis festgelegt werden. Eine Haupteigenschaft stellt die Aus-blendeigenschaft dar.
Durch diese Erweiterung werden analog zur komplexen Zahl (Euleridentität) Zusammenhänge zwischen kontinuierlichen und diskreten Beschreibungsformen sichtbar, das Differential nicht stetig differenzierbarer Funktionen (Sprünge) wird erschlossen und weiteres mehr. Dies ist für die Technik und Naturwissenschaft von zentraler Bedeutung, da ein derartiges Signal- und Systemverhalten in der Praxis nicht wegzudenken wäre (Stick-Slip, Schalter umlegen usw.).
Nicht zuletzt lässt sich hierüber der Faltungssatz linearer, zeit/shift-invarianter Systeme herleiten.
