Food Production – life before supermarkets…
In the past, people had to produce all their food
themselves. So how did they make sure they
always had enough to eat? At our Food

was produced and – more importantly – how it
was preserved. Museum staff and farm workers
demonstrate traditional techniques for processing
food. Young visitors can help with potato

harvesting, gardening, milling (the flour mills will
be in operation on both days), baking and many
other food-related activities. For larger groups,

FROMMES GEDENKEN UND FRÖHLICHE
HOFFNUNG – GEMÄLDE-EPITAPHIEN IN
FRANKEN
„Bild und Bibel“ lautet das Jahresmotto der
Lutherdekade für 2015. Ein schöner Anlass für
das Museum Kirche in Franken, eine wenig
beachtete Gruppe von Kunstwerken in den
Mittelpunkt zu rücken: Gemäldeepitaphien aus
Franken. Die Ausstellung zeigt an ausgewählten
Beispielen, dass diese Erinnerungsmale zu
Unrecht Vielen kaum bekannt sind.
Ausgangspunkt für die Ausstellung ist eine
Würzburger Dissertation. Begleitend erscheint ein
reich illustrierter Band, der erstmals nahezu alle
bekannten evangelischen fränkischen
Gemäldeepitaphien vorstellt.

“FROMMES GEDENKEN UND FRÖHLICHE
HOFFNUNG” – an exhibition of painted
epitaphs from Franconia
The 2015 motto of the Luther Decade,
celebrating 500 years of the Reformation, is “Art
and the Bible”. A perfect occasion for the
Museum Kirche in Franken to dedicate an
exhibition to this little-known group of religious
artworks. Selected examples from Franconia
highlight the beauty of these commemorative
paintings. The exhibition is based on a
dissertation from Würzburg and is accompanied
by a richly illustrated volume that brings together,
for the first time, a comprehensive overview of
virtually all known painted epitaphs in Franconia.

HAMMERHART! WERKZEUG 1700-1950
Das Fränkische Freilandmuseum besitzt eine der
größten und vielfältigsten Geräte- und
Werkzeugsammlungen in Süddeutschland. Es
vereint unter seinem Dach rund 25.000 Stücke,
die 45 unterschiedlichen Handwerken zugeordnet
sind. Die Ausstellung zeigt erstmals eine größere
Auswahl dieser Arbeitsgeräte der Zeit von 1700
bis 1950. Im Fokus stehen spannende und
unerwartete Themen nach der kulturellen
Bedeutung von Werkzeug. Dabei werden
vielfältige Beziehungen zwischen arbeitender
Person, Arbeitsgerät und Produkt aufgedeckt:
Wie entwickelte sich ein Bohrer seit dem
Spätmittelalter? Welche Bedeutung besaß
Migration bei der Verbreitung technischen
Wissens um 1700? Waren Werkzeuge auch
Symbole? Viele, viele weitere Fragen
verdeutlichen, dass Werkzeuge mehr als nur
technische Gerätschaften waren!
Sat 28th March to Sun 13th December,

“HAMMERHART!” – an exhibition of tools
from 1700 to 1950
With around 25,000 items serving 45 different
trades, the Fränkisches Freilandmuseum has one
of the largest and most comprehensive
collections of historic tools and equipment in
southern Germany. For the first time, this
exhibition presents a larger selection of tools from
the period 1700 to 1950. The focus in putting the
exhibition together was on the cultural meaning of
tools and the relationships between the tool, the
person working with it and the end product.
Questions are also raised about the evolution of
specific tools, the importance of migratory
movements in disseminating technological
knowledge and the symbolic significance of tools
– showing clearly that there is always more to a
tool than just its technical purpose.

KUNST UNTERM KIRCHENDACH – EINE
INSTALLATION DES WINDSHEIMER
KÜNSTLERS GERHARD RIESSBECK AM
ALTAR DER SPITALkIRCHE

“KUNST UNTERM KIRCHENDACH” – an altar
installation by Windsheim artist Gerhard
Rießbeck
Gerhard Rießbeck studied art under Prof. Werner
Knaupp at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg.
On his extensive travels to the Arctic and
Antarctic, he became fascinated with the rugged,
wide-open landscapes and the special, almost
otherworldly quality of the Arctic light. His large-
format landscape paintings emphasize the
majesty – sacrality even – of nature. Rießbeck’s
installation at the Spitalkirche provokes
contemplation of the relationships between nature
and religion.

BÄUERLICHES LEBEN AUF DER BURG
Das Leben auf einer Burg war früher weit weniger
romantisch und waffenstarrend als in Filmen und
Romanen meist dargestellt. Mit seinen oft

Everyday life in a medieval castle
Life in a castle in the Middle Ages was not quite
as romantic and swashbuckling as films and
stories suggest. With their plethora of utilitarian

resembled large fortified farmsteads. In this
illustrated talk, Dr Daniel Burger, castle expert
and archivist at the Nuremberg State Archive,
explores this aspect by looking at several
examples from the Nuremberg region.

MODEST MUSSORGSKY: BILDER EINER
AUSSTELLUNG
Der Komponist Hans-Karsten Raecke hat den
berühmten Zyklus für ein Ensemble von sieben
Vokalsolisten und zwei Masterkeyboards
arrangiert und mit eigenen Texten versehen.
„Herausforderung und Motivation, die Bilder einer
Ausstellung von Modest Mussorgsky einer
Neubearbeitung zu unterziehen, war, dieses
instrumentale Werk der musikalischen
Weltliteratur für die Chorarbeit zu erschließen.
Die Melodiekraft der einzelnen Teile schrie
förmlich nach Textierung. Es galt, den
musikalischen Bildern durch passgerechte,
inhaltlich und formal sorgfältig gearbeitete
Gedichte neue, erweiternde Assoziationsräume
hinzuzufügen. Dabei kommen sprachgestaltende
Kriterien heutiger und traditioneller Lyrik zur
Anwendung.“ (Hans-Karsten Raecke)

Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
The composer Hans-Karsten Raecke has
arranged Mussorgsky’s famous cycle for an
ensemble of seven vocalists and two master
keyboards. This also involved writing his own
lyrics for the vocalisation. “The challenge and
motivation for me, in rearranging Modest
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, was to
make this important instrumental piece
accessible for choir work. In their melodic
strength, the set’s individual components were
virtually crying out to be cast into words. So I felt
compelled to offer further space for interpretation
and free association through carefully crafted
lyrics that, in both form and content, complement
the imagery evoked by the music. In doing so, I
drew on modern and traditional elements of
poetic expression.” (Hans-Karsten Raecke)
