When Geist residents and entrepreneurs Marty Miller and Mark Gricius watched their daughters play basketball on the same travel team over the last few years, they couldn’t help but wonder, “What would help them gain better skills and become more competitive in an already competitive program?” The ultimate answer? Better agility and
quickness. The solution? A product since developed by the two to help athletes become stronger and faster on their feet, called simply, The Cube.
This new performance enhancement tool is a portable grid-like system that became available on the market just seven months ago. It is already being utilized by several Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball programs, along with Moto Travel Volleyball Club in Fishers, and various high schools throughout the Indianapolis area. The Cube is designed to help athletes improve their ability to move forward, sideways, backwards and at angles that, according to Miller, have been typically forgotten in standard agility training programs.
“The Cube can fit inside a typical gym bag when folded,
and can be set up and ready to use within 60 seconds,” says Miller. This, he says, is a huge benefit, as it allows coaches and players to work on skills at home, on the road, inside or outdoors. And although The Cube’s initial use was for athletic development, it is also being used in additional applications, such as ankle and knee rehabilitation, cardio fitness programs and team building activities.
“Almost all coaches that have seen The Cube in action have been very receptive to this new idea,” says Gricius. “Once they are shown a few simple drills that can help them with their specific sport, they really see the benefit of our product.”
“We use The Cube to allow our girls to warm up before tournament games,” says Eric Rhiver, owner of Moto Travel Volleyball Club. “When you have limited space but need to get your players game-ready and focused, it’s the perfect tool.” Rhiver also utilizes The Cube Training Program, and sends the device home with players so that they can practice drills and work on skills on their own time.
Rhiver says that The Cube is a low-cost and convenient way to implement SQA (skills, quickness and agility) training with athletes in a fun and challenging way. “My players get competitive when they see how well another player is able to do The Cube drills, and it encourages them to improve on their own skills,” he says.
Miller says that The Cube helps with balance and coordination, and allows users to implement backward movements, which ultimately help in overall skill improvement. In fact, students at Indianapolis University, Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI) are currently involved in a special project to help explain additional benefits that teams and programs can experience by using this type of system, and implementing textbook work studies into real-life applications. This project will focus on different ways to increase cardio, balance, coordination and quickness while also increasing agility in the 360 degree movement that The Cube allows.
“We’re very excited to see what started out as just an idea come to garner so much interest and be used by so many people,” Miller says. “We hope to continue to explore new uses for The Cube, and to see growth in the number of athletes, coaches and individuals who use it for a variety of health and fitness purposes.” For more information about The Cube, visit www.GetTheCube.com.

At Purdue University he was an All America quarterback, Big Ten MVP, and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He played quarterback 11 years in the NFL, including two stints with the Indianapolis Colts, and earlier this year was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. Mark Herrmann knows a little something about physical fitness and success. “My whole life I’ve understood that it’s best to be in good physical shape, and to compete,” said the onetime Carmel High School quarterback. “That’s what I’ve tried to do since second grade.”
Today, he’s still on message, helping kids understand the importance of exercise and healthy eating. Herrmann, 51 and a consultant to St. Vincent Health, is responsible for promoting Project 18, a childhood obesity initiative aimed at students in grades 3-5 to educate them about risk factors associated with childhood obesity. “This is a critical age in the development of healthy eating habits,” explained Herrmann. “And, I want kids to pull away from sitting and watching TV and playing video games, and to understand that they don’t have to be a great athlete to be active.”
Oh, and Herrmann has a like-minded colleague you might be familiar with – a fellow named Peyton Manning. “Childhood obesity is a problem that Peyton is passionate about helping to solve,” said Herrmann, who accompanies the Indianapolis Colts star on classroom visits.
Project 18 is affiliated with Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital and was developed in association with Ball State University and Marsh Supermarkets. The program encourages holistic health and good eating habits. “Obviously Peyton’s name carries a lot of weight,” said Herrmann, no pun intended. “He really is passionate about kids making right choices to be healthy and active.”
The 18-week curriculum is a big hit, with more then 300 elementary schools across the state participating. Teachers receive binders filled with materials that they incorporate into classroom instruction. Kids are tested before instruction begins, and again afterward to determine measurable results. South Grove Intermediate School in Beech Grove was selected as Project 18’s first challenge winner, earning a $2,500 award and a school visit from Manning.
“Peyton’s been great to work with,” said Herrmann. “He obviously has a very busy schedule, but he makes the time. We’re trying to affect students, and in turn, their families by generating a tidal wave of good health habits.”
Herrmann understands that the program’s success will be judged on its outcome. “This fits right in with St. Vincent’s focus on preventative medicine, where the hope is that by making informed choices at a young age kids might just fend off health-related problems down the road.”
Schools and teachers interested in learning more about Project 18 should visit www.project18.stvincent.org, or call 317-338-KIDS (5437).

Step through the door into the Mud Creek Theater at the corner of 86th Street and Mud Creek Road and you enter a world of longstanding community tradition. Six decades in the making, this building – affectionately called “The Barn” – is much more than a theater, and the Mud Creek Players are much more than a troupe of actors.
“Indeed,” explained Sallie Aull, the group’s current historian. Since the group’s formal beginnings in 1950, in addition to acting, directing, building sets, designing costumes and delighting audiences, they have also been fiercely protective of this treasured neighborhood through civic leadership, humanitarian efforts and preservation.
In past decades, ticket sales for their play performances often helped raise money to successfully fight threats to the community, such as a turnpike to Chicago proposed in 1956 that would have cut a path straight through the Mud Creek Valley; the 1962 satellite airport plan that would have swallowed up the northwest corner of 86th Street and Sargent Road; or the water company’s plan to create another reservoir by damming Mud Creek and flooding the entire valley.
When they’re not saving the community from certain disaster, putting on a production or hosting the Barn Rats (their summer kids’ theater school), the Mud Creek Players
are also a social club.
“Our group is very unique that way,” said Barcia Alejos, corresponding secretary for the Mud Creek Players. “We get together for dinners. Groups get together to play cards. We do parties.”
“It’s more of a huge family,” said Aull. Her husband, Larry, agrees. “There are no stars at Mud Creek,” he said. “You could see somebody opening night cleaning the bathroom in their costume.”
And the fact that there is such an age range among the members is a huge plus to many of the parents who have joined. “Everyone’s got something to offer,” said Alejos. “I want my kids to grow up in an environment where they can learn from that.”
Larry joked about making a sweatshirt for his daughter that read, “Yes, thank you, I was raised in a barn.” And he likens the supportive, familial atmosphere of that barn to a church of sorts. “Frankly, we have everything but the altar,” he said.
“We have members who are children or grandchildren of people who started it,” added Alejos. “We want to keep the traditions that are important to us as a group and still move forward in the community.”
That means new members are always welcome, social and civic activities will continue to unfold in and around the Mud Creek Theater, and every season theater-goers will be entertained by homespun, high-energy, frequent laughter-inducing productions.
Don’t miss the hilarity of the farce Whose Wives Are They Anyway? coming in February. Ticket information, show dates and times can be found at www.mudcreekplayers.com.
Step in for a theater and community experience 60 years in the making, and you can be confident in the knowledge that 60 years from now the Mud Creek Players will still be working their magic, both on stage and off.
