Technologisch Perspectief: Teleologie
![Page 5: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Howard Rheingold
• The Virtual Community (1993) (http://www.rheingold.com/): beschrijft ervaringen in The Well verkondigt idee dat internet gemeenschapsleven kan herstellen & democratie bevorderen.
• Virtual Reality(1991): extreme versie van technologisch perspectief teleologische geschiedenis
![Page 6: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
6
Teleologie
![Page 7: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
7
![Page 8: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
8
Rheingold vervolg:
• Van Lascaux naar virtuele realiteit
• Precies het type teleologische geschiedschrijving waarop veel kritiek is geuit.
![Page 9: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
9
![Page 10: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
10
![Page 11: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
11
Technologisch Perspectief: technologisch determinisme
![Page 12: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
12
![Page 13: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
13
Probleem
![Page 14: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
14
McLuhan (1911-1980)
• Wetenschappelijke celebrity
![Page 15: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
15
Oneliners
• If it Works, it’s obsolete• With telephone and TV it is not so much
the message as the sender that is “sent”• People don’t actually read newspapers.
They step into them every morning like a hot bath
• When you are on the phone or on the air, you have no body
• The future of the book is the blurb
![Page 16: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
16
• Remediation
• Extending the sensorium, the medium is the message, en hot and cold media
![Page 17: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
17
Extending the sensorium
![Page 18: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
18
The Medium is the Message
![Page 19: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
19
• Whether the light is being used for brain surgery or night baseball is a matter of indifference. It could be argued that these activities are in some way the ‘content’ of the electric light. This fact merely underlines the point that “the medium is the message” because it is the medium that shapes and controls the scale and form of human association and action.
![Page 20: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
20
Hot and Cold Media
![Page 21: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
21
Categorisering:
![Page 22: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

23
Mediaculturen
![Page 24: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
24
![Page 25: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25
Cultural Studies
Raymond WilliamsStuart Hall
![Page 26: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
26
Raymond Williams
• Zoon van een spoorwegwerker
• Werd rond WOII Marxist
• Verkocht 750.000 boeken
![Page 27: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
27
Cultural Studies
![Page 28: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
28
• We have to think of determination not as a single force, or a single abstraction of forces, but as a process in which real determining factors – the distribution of power or of capital, social and physical inheritance, relations of scale and size between groups – set limits and exert pressures, but neither wholly control nor wholly predict the outcome of complex activity within or at these limits, and under or against these pressures.
![Page 29: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
29
![Page 30: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
30
Kritiek 1 van Williams op McLuhan
• For if the medium [] is the cause, all other causes [] are at once reduced to effects. Similarly, what are elsewhere seen as effects, and as such subject to social, cultural, psychological and moral questioning, are excluded as irrelevant
![Page 31: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
31
Kritiek 1 van Williams op McLuhan vervolg
• The physical fact of instant transmission has been uncritically raised to a social fact, without any pause to notice that virtually all such transmission is at once selected and controlled by existing social authorities. McLuhan, of course, would apparently do away with all such controls
![Page 32: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
32
Kritiek 1 van Williams op McLuhan vervolg
• If the effect of the medium is the same, whoever controls or uses it, and whatever apparent content he may try to insert, then we can forget ordinary political and cultural argument and let the technology run itself.
![Page 33: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
33
Kritiek van Williams op McLuhan 2
• It is hardly surprising that this conclusion has been welcomed by the “media-men'' of the existing institutions. Thus what began as pure formalism, and as speculation on human essence, ends as operative social theory and practice, in the heartland of the most dominative and aggressive communications institutions in the world
![Page 34: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
34
![Page 35: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
35
![Page 36: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
36
Derde verschil tussen McLuhan en Williams
McLuhan: definieert technologie zonder verdere discussie
![Page 37: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
37
![Page 38: GTNM 2008 HC3](https://reader035.vdocuments.pub/reader035/viewer/2022062312/5571f19c49795947648b66f9/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
38
Standpunt New Media
