Cycle ride i memory of tragic Michael
CYCLISTS have raised well over 1,500 in memory of Hoole schoolboy Michael Hayward,
who tragically died from a brain tumour. Family and friends cycled 100 miles around
Cheshire in aid of the Michael Hayward Whatever Appeal which supports research into the
effect of treatment on children.
Michael, who lived in Hamilton Street, died eight years after a large tumour was removed
from his brain. The surgery and subsequent chemotherapy left him with a number of
problems, which his parents Debra and Phil are keen to highlight.
Charity football match
A FOOTBALL match was played last month in memory of Danny Lunt, who was found
dead at Hoole Bridge Building Supplies in March. Friends arranged the game at Chesters
stadium on Bumpers Lane to raise funds for the Campaign Against Living Miserably charity.

CARLA Phillips, from Hoole, is
urging people to sign up for organ
donor register.
Carla has had two new kidneys
and is highlighting the fact that
there are more than 10,000
people in need of an organ
transplant.
Carlas kidneys failed as
the result of repeated
infections as a child. Itwas a complete shock
when doctors told her that
her kidneys had been
destroyed beyond repair
and she would have to start dialysis, to
remove the toxins from her blood, aged 19.
There is no cure for end stage renal failure,
the only hope of a respite from the hard
grind of dialysis is a transplant. She went
on the waiting list in 1991 and got hertransplant in 1992.
Carlas rst transplant came from a donor
who had been involved in a road trafc
accident. In their darkest moment of grief
and shock, his family had chosen to give
others the gift of life. That kidney lasted 15
years and allowed Carla to lead a close to
normal life.
In 2006 she was told that her kidney
function had deteriorated to such a level
that she would have to start dialysis again.
She moved back to Chester from London to
be near her old transplant centre, dragging
with her new boyfriend Peter.
Carla suffered some setbacks, including
the night before her wedding to Peter,
leading to her begging doctors to let her
out of hospital in order to get to the register
ofce!Peter saved her life after she suffered a
brain haemorrhage. However, she was told
that because of her high antibody
levels the chance of receiving
another cadaveric donor kidney was
very slim.
Peter had offered to be a donor,
but he and Carla were different
blood types and therefore
not a match. The transplant
co-ordinator at her hospital
suggested they should go
in for a paired donation
where offered kidneys were
matched to other couples
in the same situation. Peter
would give a kidney to a
stranger in return for a kidney for Carla.
Peter had his op rst, and Carlas
kidney arrived later and was successfully
transplanted that evening.Carla felt
better the moment she woke up, though
she concedes that may have been themorphine! She went home 18 days later
to start a new life. There have been a
couple of hiccups, but none of these minor
setbacks have stood in her way.
She won a gold medal at the 2011 British
Transplant Games, raising over 1200 for
charity, she is starting her own business,
driving lessons, holidays, more involvement
in her hobbies - all these things have only
become possible with the increased energy, wellness and positivity that comes with a
transplant.
Carla says: Bringing a person back
from the brink, from misery and very real
possibility of death, is a power you hold in
the palm of your hand. A two minute form
could change up to eight peoples lives. You
have nothing to lose, and - because you are
much more likely to need an organ than to
donate - everything to gain from everyonebeing on the register. Please sign up today.

Soggy garden?Let Dig & Shift alleviate the problem by installing land drains
Land drains when installed by Dig & Shift are a very eficient, corrugated and perforated
pipe laid underground within a drainage medium for collecting excess rainwater from
boggy areas such as gardens and playing ields. The water ilters into the land drain via
the perforations and is then run o to a suitable dispersal point such as soakaway or
watercourse
Often we are able to solve the problem quickly and eficiently with the minimum of
disruption to you and your garden
If you are considering installing land drains as part of a larger garden make over we are
able to assist with this and if it something we dont do we will be able to recommend areputable tradesman or Co that can!
Dig & Shift your local, reputable groundworks company
Our services also include mini digger & dumper hire, garden clearance, ponds dug out,
driveways, footings for new build or extensions inc spoil & waste removal,
topsoil & turf supplied and laid, domestic drains

Iwanted home to have frozen in time and forthe memories to have come ooding back. As Ineared the edge of the town the stereo senseda dramatic window of opportunity and threwout an early 90s ballad. I leaned heavily onwheel and let the music wash over me in whatshould have been an Oscar worthy performancecapturing the melancholy of the moment andalthough my part was played to perfection, themonumental tear jerker suddenly become theweirdness of the Return to Oz!
The town had stopped beating and althoughfrozen, it was not preserved. It was dilapidated.Run down. The Woolworths building was now
an everythings a pound shop and even theWimpy had turned off its ovens and hiddenitself away behind white washed glass. Hueshad faded in the sun and a dust seemed to settleeverywhere. The Emerald City was nothing
more than semi-rural run down town centrefull of shutters and closing down sales.
Although my parents immaculate house,in its Stepford-esque setting, was still warm, welcoming and well received, I could not shakeoff the sadness of the high street. The heart of
the town was in need of CPR and I understoodwhy my parents were so in love with Hoole. It offered everything that their home townlacked. From living with the need to impressmy parents I was suddenly aware of the waythey were now living through their children. Ifwe were young girls we would probably now beparaded with backcombed hair and ten tonneof make up in sickly sweet beauty pageantsprofessing our love of puppy dogs and worldpeace.
As two 30-something-year-old blokes myMother had to play a different hand. Mybrother has the fantastically well paid job in thecentre of London and has become a commuterbut lives only a stones throw from my parentswhere as I may not have scored highly onthe career section of the game of life I haveclocked up all the Brownie points in terms ofgeographical location. If this was top trumps,
my Mother holds quite a good hand. The drive down Faulkner Street on route
home from my South East stint needed nomelancholic music. The soundtrack and

nostalgia were completely irrelevant. I was
home. Home is not just the wallpaperedfour walls and roof above our heads. Homeis everything that surrounds us. Its ourbackyard, the view from our bedroom windowand the sounds of our street. Its the churchbells that ring, the blackbirds that sing and thecar alarm that adds a slight Dubstep remix tothe proceedings.
Orang plastic bags
Home is the blossoms, the fresh breads ofBaked, the chatter of kids coming home fromschool and the burnt out wheelie bin that stilllitters the oor because the council workerswho replaced the melted plastic were notbriefed that they had to dispose of the old lid.The same mess that the bin men can not clearbecause it is not placed inside the bin andtherefore remains a mass of blue spaghettithat has attracted the company of two white
plastic garden chairs and a fridge! Misery doeslove company.
But the heart of Hoole hasnt stopped inits tracks. Its not desperately holding on tosomething from the past. It is embracingchange. I hated the thought of the sea oforange plastic carriers spilling into our streetsand assumed the shiny new Sainsburys wasgoing to be our downfall but having beenopen just over a week, it is as if its always
been there. There is no obvious boycottbut then again there are no obvious locallysourced products on the shelves so you winsome, you lose some. The customer service
is a great improvement to that of the woman
with her mobile phone seemingly stapling hershoulder to the side of her head in one of theneighbouring similar stores so maybe thereare lessons to be learned there. #just saying.
And its not just the chain stores taking therisks. New independent establishments arepopping up like spring bulbs. Brook Streetreaches out from Chesters city towards us,paving a pathway of what used to be take-aways, pet groomers and adult shops but nowpractically glows with a newly refurbishedeateries, the fantastically retro BecnicksWonder Emporium and, taking a leaf outof Becnicks catalogue of historical chic, the Brooklyn Barber Shop who have left nostone unturned in terms of ambience, decorand good old fashioned customer service. And whats interesting is, these independentsuccesses are coming our way. So, when allis said and done, Sainsburys have made astatement about the heart of our Community the future is bright but not just orange.
As I write this, the sun has crept out. Its abit of a novelty right now but after the wetstart to the year it encourages growth. Withthat in mind, I look forward to being a part ofHooles development and sit in the windowof the Sticky Walnut watching the heart ofHoole beat strong and deantly. And the nexttime London calls, Im ensure to pack my rubyslipper because there is now place like home(repeat three times).

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, we give you thanksfor the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; for her
steadfast faith and for her royal service to this nation and all thepeoples of the Commonwealth.Bless the food before us and the people beside us; may the sharingof this meal strengthen our communities, and nurture the bondsbetween us of friendship, hope and trust. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ who reigns as servant of
all.Amen
This is a specially written grace thanking God for the
Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen - and the foodto be shared at Jubilee celebrations. Seen by Her Majesty,it will be prayed by millions of people throughout theCommonwealth on Sunday 3rd June, before they share a BigJubilee Lunch in their communities. As you will be aware thenation will be holding 4 days of celebrations from June 2nd toJune 5th to mark the Diamond Jubilee.
The ofcial emblem for The Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012 is the winning designfollowing a national competition for children aged between 6 and 14. It was drawn by
10-year-old Katherine Dewar, who is from Chester! Im sure many of you have seenit is available for use for activities associated with the Diamond Jubilee celebrationsincluding community and national events, publications, retail and merchandising. Herein Hoole we are holding our own community event to celebrate The Diamond Jubileeis a unique moment in our countrys history and is important that the local Hoolecommunity has the chance to come together to celebrate. The churches are in an idealposition to help make this happen and we offer this event free of charge. Hoole is aspecial place and we want to celebrate all that is good and positive about it.
So on Sunday 3rd Jun Hool Alxandra Park from 11.30am into thaftrnoon thr will b a Community Church Sric including a localchildrns choir, li music by a Salation Army band and rousing hymnsinging. This will be followed by a picnic in the park and games for the all the family. The four Hoole Churches will host the whole event. Please do consider joining us for thisand lets celebrate and give thanks to God for the life and reign of Her Majesty QueenElizabeth.
Also to mark this special occasion more than 400,000 copies of a commemorativeDiamond Jubilee New Testament have been ordered across the nation and here in Hoole
over 350 copies will be given to every family in Hoole Primary School and some to giveaway at the community celebration, This gift recognises the strong Christian faith thatthe Queen has and how this faith underpins her life of service and duty to the country.
