KZN IVG Club Farmers’ Day – 28 September 2017
On Saturday 28 September the KZN Club held their third farmers day and sixth event for the year 2017.
It was a resounding success with a total of 43 people (37 members and 6 non-members [all of whom have
filled in application forms to join the Club!]) attending along with 6 goat-mad children!
Attendees came from as far afield as Central Zululand, Northern Natal, KZN South Coast, as well as from all
over the KZN Midlands.
The two main topics were:
A) The Selecting of Productive Ewes. This was both a lecture with notes provided and a hands-on
demonstration amongst 60 ewes and 3 rams held in pens (kindly supplied by AAM Auctioneers for the
day).
B) Record Keeping as a management tool.
The above topics were presented by Hilton Sanders; the two topics go hand-in-hand as one must not only
rely on a visual appraisal of one’s ewes but cross reference with accurate records in order to increase one’s
productivity in any given flock.
2
A short presentation was then given by Liwisi of Ivili Luboya Cashmere Processors of Butterworth Eastern
Cape. This was a brief introduction to Cashmere production and harvesting as a value-added product to any
meat goat flock in South Africa found over 1000m in altitude.
This was followed by a further short presentation by Hilton on Value Adding - Correct Handling of Skins.
All of the presentations were accompanied by hand-outs for the attendees to keep for further reference.
The discussion times were lively, as were the Coffee and Tea Intervals! All of the above was followed in true
KZN IVG Club fashion by a Wors Braai and Salads!
The feedback from members has been very encouraging:
• "A very worthwhile and enlightening day" – Zamo Zuma.
• "The best day I have attended as far as recieving relevant and practical information ever on goats" –
Rory Brighton.
• "This was a really good day with lots of value; thanks guys!" – Themba Hadebe.
The KZN Club Committee is already working on the events for 2018, including a breeding goat sale, as well
as further farmers’ days, a bigger presence at the 2018 PMB Royal Show, The Annual Goat Agribusiness
Conference held in Durban and perhaps a stand at the Eston Agricultural Show.
Watch this space!

2nd Annual Goat Agribusiness Conference – 19 October 2017
The KZN IVG Club committee was invited to showcase the club at the 2nd Annual Goat Agribusiness
Conference held at the Durban Botanical Gardens on the 19th of October, hosted by Goats Unlimited. The
theme of the conference was “Mbuzi the Real Deal!”
There were 240 attendees that were mightily blessed by the top-notch speakers that presented topics such
as:
• “Goats – Mitigator of Drought”;
• “Value Adding through Cashmere and Milk Production”;
• “An overview of the Namibian Goat Industry”;
• “Profitable Goat Production” – this topic was presented by club member Roy Caldecott.
This is a very worthwhile conference to attend and the Club has been invited to attend once again in 2018.
Club Chairman Hilton Sanders has also been approached by Dr. Bandile Mkhize to look at doing a
presentation at the 2018 Conference.
4
What has been very encouraging is that at each function / event that the Club has hosted or been involved
in, they have seen the addition of new members to the club. This fact is solely due to the good
ambassadorship of each and every one of their members.

IVG Ekotipes / Eco-types
Nguni
Die Nguni-tipe bokke is waarskynlik die eko-groep
wat die mees geredelikste voorkom in suidelike
Afrika.
Swaziland, Mpumalanga, Noordelike Provinsie,
Botswana, die Caprivi, en die mees noordelike,
hoë-reënvalstreek van Namibië.
By nadere ondersoek van hierdie tipe inheemse
proporsioneel goed gebalanseerd.
Seksuele demorfisme is kenmerkend van hierdie
ekotipe – d.i. klein vroulike diere met heelwat
groter manlike diere.
oriëntasie, sommige is semi-hangend – eers in ‘n
laterale rigting en begin dan hang.
Horings is by albei geslagte aanwesig. Natuurlike
Nguni
The Nguni type is probably the group that occurs
more abundantly than the other distinct types of
indigenous goats, in southern Africa.
They occur specifically in the higher rainfall areas
stretching from the Ciskei, Transkei, Kwa-Zulu
Natal, Swaziland, Mpumalanga, Northern
Province, Botswana, the Caprivi, and extreme
northern, high rainfall area of Namibia.
Upon closer investigation of these type of
indigenous goats in the abovementioned areas it
is clear that they belong to the same phenotype,
with rather small geographic variations.
Distinctive Characteristics:
The ears of the Nguni-type goat are small to
medium and semi-pendulous.
They are medium to small frame, well
proportioned goats.
Sexual demorfism is a characteristic of the eco-
type – i.e. small females with much larger males.
The profile of the face tends to be flat or slightly
concave (hollow), although some males exhibit a
slight roman nose.
The muzzle is predominantly dark pigmented.
Shade of darkness may vary.
The ears are small to medium in size and have a
lateral (sidelong and outwards) and slightly
forward orientation, some are semi-droopy – first
pointing lateral and then starts to droop.
Horns are present in both sexes. Naturally polled
animals are sometimes found in the breed, but are
rare in most areas.
6
By ooie groei die horings opwaarts en draai
uitwaarts, maar baie variasies kan voorkom. By
Baarde is nogal algemeen by hierdie eko-tipe, en
kom voor by albei geslagte; kleiner by ooie en
Die voor-arm is fyner by ooie, en swaarder by
ramme.
Hoewe is hoofsaaklik donker-kleurig.
Soms kan ligter kleure en gestreepte hoewe
voorkom.
In females the horns grow upwards and curve
outwards, although many variations occur. In
males the horns are more inclined to curve
backwards and outwards. In females the horns are
short and lighter, and in males of medium length
and heavier.
Toggles are present in a percentage of male and
female animals.
Beards are rather general among this eco-type,
present in both sexes; small in females and large
in the case of males where it flows into the longer
hair of the neck.
The neck is slender in females and well attached to
the shoulders. Males have thicker, well-muscled
necks and shoulders covered with long hair.
The fore-arm is slender in the females and heavier
in the males. The females have a fine bone
structure in comparison to the heavier bone
structure of the males.
The ecotype has good length and depth of body.
The back tends to be slightly hollow.
The females and some of the males are not well-
muscled. In good quality males the hind quarters
are well-muscled on the inner and outer thighs.
The ecotype has a sloping rump.
The tail is short to medium, erect, with a thin base.
Both sexes have strong, but fine, and medium to
long legs. Hooves are predominantly dark in
colour. Occasionally lighter colour and striped
hooves occur.
7
The Nguni eco-type is multi coloured, with a wide
variety of uniform colours, white, black, fawn,
brown and red-brown, pied, dappled and
speckled, and all combinations of these colours,
with a tendency towards swiss-markings in the
face.
Most goats have a short, glossy hair coat, and
some goats are inclined to grow cashmere in cold
winters. Individuals with longer hair on the lower
body and hind quarters are sometimes found.
