To Whom It May Concern:
I am Felicia Victoria Chanco, junior public relations and advertising major with a minor in Spanish at Chapman University. I am interested in applying for a position at your organization and think that I have the skills sets to positively contribute to your organization.
This past semester, I worked as an account coordinator at Chapman ImPResssions, Chapman’s first student-run PR firm, for our client American Diabetes Association of Orange County. Through minor adversities with our client, I have learned real-life experience of professional-client relations and strong communication skills with my fellow account member and executive to overcome them. While working and being rewarded through interaction with different types of individuals, I maintained a professional and positive attitude towards the unplanned setbacks.
Interning at Echo Media Group over the summer gave me the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the working at an established PR agency. Given tasks such as compiling media lists, writing PR articles and pitch letters, and calling media outlets, I strived to perform at an efficient level and producing quality work. Surrounded by veterans in the industry, I observed and learned from them lessons of professionalism and management.

Executive Summary and Situation Analysis
The American Diabetes Association of Orange County (ADAOC) is a non-profit organization that aims to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Their most recent plans are to begin a coalition of the resources around Orange County that pertain to diabetes. If successful, the coalition would pioneer the other coalition forces around the nation under the other branches of the American Diabetes Association.
Ultimately creating a website to host a directory of these resources, we collaborated directly with the director of ADAOC, Allison Hickey, to put into motion these efforts. It was our duty to create a list of individual leaders of the multiple industries that work with the diabetes community. With this information, we would invite them to take a chair on the board of the coalition through email and phone call. I researched contacts from clinic, nutrition, and fitness centers and community organizations that were later compiled into a larger list of the team’s contact for use once the coalition was established. The list of industry leaders, an invitation email, a follow-up phone script, and a comprehensive contact list are included in the portfolio.
Second phase of the coalition was to create a website. It was our duty to contact web developers to request a quote and sample of their work to later employ to create the site. Alongside that, we started to produce copy for the site, including a welcome note for the home page, a history of American Diabetes Association, and a letter from Allison Hickey. Lastly, we began to prepare a press release as if the website was ready to launch. The portfolio includes a compiled web developer log, copy of the welcome note, history of ADA and Allison Hickey’s letter, and the press release.
The portfolio also includes the presentation that was given to Allison Hickey at the initial meeting as well as the information provided by her for our research.

Association of Orange County (ADA). To combat the rise in
diabetes, the ADA is initiating the Stop Diabetes Orange County
Collaborative, a coalition of individuals and organizations, who
work to serve those affected with the disease and to offer diabetes
education and support programs for Orange County.
We would like to invite you to serve on the executive board of the
Stop Diabetes Orange County Collaborative. The board will

Good afternoon, this is Felicia, calling on behalf of Alison Hickey the executive director of the American Diabetes Association of Orange County. Yes: About a week ago an email was sent to you about the future Stop Diabetes Coalition Board. We would like to extend a position to you. Did you get this email? resources in Orange County, we are dedicated to your
health and wellbeing by offering you and your family a
one-stop directory. Also hosting the latest news and

proactive and empower you and the community at large.

The American Diabetes Association was founded by 28
physicians in 1940, and throughout their many years as an
organization they have continued to learn more and more about the
genetic and environmental factors, complications, and new types of
insulin and treatments for their patients.1948 was a huge year for the
ADA, now the largest provider of diabetes camps in the world, was
created, the first National Diabetes week was observed, and the first
edition of Diabetes Forecast was published.
Finally, in 1970 their volunteer corps was recognized as a
voluntary heath organization with general membership along with its
professional membership. These gatherings soon lead to special
events being held, just like today’s nation wide Step Out: Walk to
Fight Diabetes events. Then in the 1980’s the organization continued
to grow and gain power and influence in the political world as well as
gained stepping points in the medical community.
After gaining more and more strength the ADA was, in 1993,
affiliated with more than 50 organizations to later become a national
organization in 1998. Since then the American Diabetes Association
has made it their mission to prevent and cure diabetes and improve
the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
Most recently, in 2009 the Association found, after much
research, that most Americans are ill informed and do not fully
understand diabetes and the impact in has on the lives of those
affected. In response to this information the ADA embarked on their
Stop Diabetes movement, in which they plan to gain 1 million
supporters every year to end the spread of diabetes!!

I am Allison Hickey, director of American Diabetes
Association of Orange County, and I would like to welcome
you to the Orange County Stop Diabetes Coalition. This
initiative was a direct response to the need for a united front
against the rising numbers of people being affected by
diabetes. Pioneering what we hope to be a national effort,
the Orange County Stop Diabetes Coalition aims to be a
proactive force in the community by offering a completely
accessible tool to educate the community of the resources
available to it.
Compiling OCSDC certified organizations and individuals, I
ensure you and your dear ones you that you will only get
quality contacts from our directory of dedicated and
knowledgeable organizations. At OCSDC, we hoped to bring
you a more comprehensive directory by not only hosting
contacts from the nutrition, fitness, education, and
pharmaceutical industries but also including resources from
governmental advocates and high-risk communities. OCSDC
aims to empower the community of Orange County to be
proactive in their lives.

Planning to pioneer Stop Diabetes Coalitions nationwide, OCSDC provides the community affected by diabetes a comprehensive directory tool of local resources to promote its wellbeing and offer aid to those individuals’ families.
OCSDC is compromised of Orange County leaders in advocacy, community organizations, funders, research, senior citizen care, nutrition, clinic centers, fitness, and education. First undergoing a certification process, these resources have been compiled to support healthier living and ultimately ending diabetes.
The brainchild of American Diabetes Association of Orange County, OCSDC recognizes the need to unite the abundance of resources that Orange County has to offer. OCSDC plans to set up a website where the information, including a calendar of events, seminars, and workshops, will be fully accessible to the public. This website will go live by the end of December.

Did you know that one in three children born in the United States in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime, if current trends continue? Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate. Statistics released in 2008 show that nearly 24 million children and adults live with diabetes in the United States, while another 57 million Americans are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association is leading the fight against diabetes and its deadly consequences. Prior to the early 1920s, a diabetes diagnosis was a slow and certain death sentence. Four scientists at the University of Toronto, Canada — Sir Frederick Grant Banting, Dr. Charles H. Best, Dr. Bertram Collip and John J. R. MacLeod — changed these grim odds for countless people when they discovered insulin in 1921. However, as Sir Frederick Banting stated, “Insulin is not a cure. More work needs to be done!” In 1940, a group of 26 physicians came together to form the American Diabetes Association with the intent to promote the scientific study of diabetes. Dr. Charles H. Best provided the Association with the framework and early leadership for a formalized diabetes research program. In 1970, the American Diabetes Association diversified and welcomed members and volunteers. Soon after, the Association invited nurses, dietitians and other health care professionals to join its mission. In 1998, the Association restructured from more than 50 independent affiliates, governed by a local Board of Directors, into one nationwide American Diabetes Association. Today, because of the dedication of our strong volunteer force and staff, the American Diabetes Association is the authoritative voice in the diabetes community — providing research, information and public awareness, and advocacy — as well as a world leader in supporting, funding and honoring those who have dedicated themselves to diabetes research.

! Advocacy: Advocacy plays an integral role in the American Diabetes Association’s work to fulfill its mission. Diabetes Advocates around the country work to increase funding to prevent, treat and cure diabetes; prevent diabetes and improve access to health care; and eliminate discrimination against people with diabetes at school, work and elsewhere in their lives.
With support from the American Diabetes Association’s advocacy efforts, federal health care reform legislation that will end discrimination in health insurance based on diabetes became law in March 2010. In 2009, restrictions were lifted on stem cell research, health insurance was expanded to millions of children, and state laws were passed to make schools safer for children with diabetes and to help prevent diabetes. Diabetes: The FactsDiabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes remains a mystery, although research has shown that both genetics and environmental factors appear to play roles.
! Type 1 Diabetes An autoimmune disease in which the body does not produce any insulin, most often
occurring in children and young adults. People with type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections to stay alive.
! Type 2 Diabetes A metabolic disorder resulting from the body’s inability to make enough or properly
use insulin. This form of the disease is associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity and race/ethnicity.
! Gestational diabetes A condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood
glucose levels during pregnancy.Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 40-60% chance of developing diabetes in the next 5-10 years.
