JONGEREN EN SOCIALE MEDIA:
DE DOOD VAN PRIVACY?
Ralf De Wolf
“Living the public life is the
new default”
“Transparency will replace
privacy as the social norm and
ideal”
“Privacy is a passing artefact
of the industrial age”

privacy instellingen op sociale media. Moeten jongeren
hun privacy beter beschermen?”

Privacy paradox
Gebruikers zeggen dat ze zich veel zorgen maken over
hun privacy (attitude), maar delen tegelijkertijd heel wat
persoonlijke informatie online (gedrag)
I. Belang van definitie
“Je bent niet de klant maar het product
dat wordt verkocht”
“Big brother is watching you”
Institutionele versus sociale privacy
Institutionele privacy: privacy vis-à-vis derde partijen
(overheden, bedrijven, etc.)
Sociale privacy: privacy vis-à-vis andere personen

II. Verder kijken dan alleen privacy instellingen
Alleen focus op privacy instellingen = heel gelimiteerd
Subtiele privacy management strategieën:
- “Unlimited sharing”
- “Sociale steganografie”

Unlimited sharing
“In a world in which posting updates is common, purposeful, and performative, sharing
often allows teens to control a social situation more than simply opting out. It also
guarantees that others can’t define the social situation. Sitting in an afterschool
program in Los Angeles, I casually asked a teen participant why she shared so many
embarrassing photos of herself on her profile. She laughed and told me that it was a lot
safer if she shared her photos and put them in context by what she wrote than if she did not
because she knew that her friends also had embarrassing photos. They’d be happy to
embarrass her if she let them. But by taking preemptive action and mocking herself by
writing dismissive messages on photos that could be interpreted problematically, she
undermined her friends’ ability to define the situation differently. After explaining her logic,
she continued on to explain how her apparent exhibitionism left plenty of room for
people to not focus on the things that were deeply intimate in her life.”

Sociale steganografie
= “hiding in plain sight”
Bv. posten van emotionele lyrics in het nieuwsoverzicht
van Facebook

III. Genetwerkte context in rekening brengen
11
Privacy defaitisme
“what can I really do?”
12
Conclusie
Is privacy dood?
Geven jongeren om privacy?
• Belang van definitie (wat is privacy?)
• In rekening brengen van subtiele privacy strategieën
• Belang van context
