Lényem él tovább?
Substance Still Lives? (5)
Ez az élet is véget ér majd, ez itt,
az enyém. Nyarát az izgága idő
Ocsmány télbe űzi, hideous winter.
Nem maradhat meg, mi volt? Sem emléke?
Nor it, nor remembrance what it was?
Nem lesz? Jövővé nem alakul többé?
S várja tél, entrópia? A halál,
mely hozományát elherdálja? Élni
tovább azt, mit itt hagyok, a hatalmak
aligha engedik majd. Talán mégis,
foszlányokban, szavakban itt lehetek?
Leszek tán itt kedveseim nyarában?
Angyalom súgja: substance still lives sweet,
Csak alakom vesztem, s lényem él tovább?
5
Those hours that with gentle work did frame
The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell
Will play the tyrants to the very same,
And that unfair which fairly doth excel:
For never-resting time leads summer on
To hideous winter and confounds him there,
Sap checked with frost and lusty leaves quite gone,
Beauty o'er-snowed and bareness every where:
Then were not summer's distillation left
A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft,
Nor it nor no remembrance what it was.
But flowers distilled though they with winter meet,
Leese but their show, their substance still lives sweet.
Öröklét-bérlet
Summer's lease (18)
Örök eternal bérlet a nyárra,
summer's lease e kék-zöld-barna felhős
papír. Életet hoz, gives life. Táncolnak
a vonalak, szétnyílnak a sorok,
tüzijáték-kéve. Valami roppan
bennem, mozdulnak a gémberedett
mondatkötegek. Fellélegzek. Nyarat,
életet hoz, gives life ez a robbanás
a papíron. Fényt. A csillagot is
megláthattam tegnap: éreztem, ma
újra megnyílhat a szólás tere.
Felnyílhat az ég, s magára talál
a szó. Felhőjáték? Öröklét-bérlet?
Summer's lease. Nyár ajándéka. Igézet.
18
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Másik ént
Make thee another self (10)
Teremts magadnak másik ént, another
self. Mert gyilkos gyűlölet rabja lettél,
poklodba zárva így vagy élő halott.
murd'rous hate, az költözött beléd.
Hazudsz magadnak felsőbb üzenetet,
hogy fentről ítélhesd mind aki él.
Te, aki halálos beteget gúnyoltál,
te s a többi, eszére oly kevély.
És kérődzött a szád, míg a pap beszélt
a másik halott felett, kit egykor
szerettél, talán. Rombolni - ruinate,
urinate - vizelni a szállásra, hol
esélyt kaptál, esendő átmenetet.
Another self: másik ént, míg teheted.
10
For shame deny that thou bear'st love to any
Who for thy self art so unprovident.
Grant if thou wilt, thou art beloved of many,
But that thou none lov'st is most evident:
For thou art so possessed with murd'rous hate,
That 'gainst thy self thou stick'st not to conspire,
Seeking that beauteous roof to ruinate
Which to repair should be thy chief desire:
O change thy thought, that I may change my mind,
Shall hate be fairer lodged than gentle love?
Be as thy presence is gracious and kind,
Or to thy self at least kind-hearted prove,
Make thee another self for love of me,
That beauty still may live in thine or thee.
Megöl a gondolat
Thought kills me (44)
Megöl a gondolat, hogy gondolat nem vagyok.
Thought kills me that I am not thought.
Nem öl meg. Kills me not. De a gondolat,
hogy nem vagyok, megöl, megölhet. Hogy
puszta gondolat nem vagyok, jó dolog.
Mert bár légies jegyben születtem,
földből és vízből is vétettem, so much
of earth and water wrought, annyira földből
és vízből, hogy végső nyugtot hoz nekem,
előleget, a feltúrt rög tavaszi
illata. Ujjászül. Átmos, mint a tó
vize úszáskor, mint lényed, ha benned
ringok. Beléd mosódom. Feltámadok.
Ez, ha gondolat, ez is (mind) én vagyok.
44
If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,
Injurious distance should not stop my way,
For then despite of space I would be brought,
From limits far remote, where thou dost stay,
No matter then although my foot did stand
Upon the farthest earth removed from thee,
For nimble thought can jump both sea and land,
As soon as think the place where he woulda be.
But ah, thought kills me that I am not thought
To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,
But that so much of earth and water wrought,
I must attend, time's leisure with my moan.
Receiving nought by elements so slow,
But heavy tears, badges of either's woe.
E bús hiátus
This sad interim (56)
E szomorú szünet, mint az óceán,
this sad interim like the ocean
elválaszt partokat. Parts the shore.
Két parttá szakította, mi egy volt.
Mint két kontinens, külön világban
látunk-e közös Holdat tiszta éjen?
This sad interim, e bús hiátus.
Két kontinens külön világban, közös
Hold. Atlantisz Holdja, bámulunk téged
külön partokról. Kettő lett, mi együtt
volt egész. Édes Istenem, ki partot
szakasztottál, rekeszd el a vizet,
hogy az én rózsám láthasson engemet.
Láthassuk egymást. Múljon e bús szünet.
56
Sweet love renew thy force, be it not said
Thy edge should blunter be than appetite,
Which but to-day by feeding is allayed,
To-morrow sharpened in his former might.
So love be thou, although to-day thou fill
Thy hungry eyes, even till they wink with fulness,
To-morrow see again, and do not kill
The spirit of love, with a perpetual dulness:
Let this sad interim like the ocean be
Which parts the shore, where two contracted new,
Come daily to the banks, that when they see:
Return of love, more blest may be the view.
Or call it winter, which being full of care,
Makes summer's welcome, thrice more wished, more
rare.
A világ-végtelen óra
The world-without-end hour (57)
A világ-végtelen órát nem szidom,
The world-without-end hour. Nem szidom
az órát. Világnyi a délután.
A szétrojtosodott mintát bámulom,
a lyukat a szőnyegen, a divány
tövében. Megint látom: a macska
élesíti körmét ott, kedvenc helyén,
szunnyadtából felocsúdva, mikor
elődöm lábába nyilall az emlék,
gyermekpillantások bevert tükre.
A kép elzökken. Barát, macska, szemek
szétfoszlanak. The world-without-end hour.
Világ-végtelen órán, számkivetve,
hiányból sző új képet képzeletem.
57
Being your slave what should I do but tend,
Upon the hours, and times of your desire?
I have no precious time at all to spend;
Nor services to do till you require.
Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour,
Whilst I (my sovereign) watch the clock for you,
Nor think the bitterness of absence sour,
When you have bid your servant once adieu.
Nor dare I question with my jealous thought,
Where you may be, or your affairs suppose,
But like a sad slave stay and think of nought
Save where you are, how happy you make those.
So true a fool is love, that in your will,
(Though you do any thing) he thinks no ill.
E dühhel

"A költésze tben legyen valami
barbár, hatalmas és vad."
Denis Diderot
E dühhel beauty hogyan dacolhat
With this rage a szépség hogyan dacolhat
E dühhel a szépség hogyan hold a plea
E dühhel a szépség how shall dacolhat
A süket heaven jajommal felverem
A süket eget with my cries felverem
A süket eget jajommal trouble
And deaf eget jajommal felverem
Így flatter I a sötét arcú éjnek
So hízelgek a sötét arcú éjnek
Szépséggel hízelgek a sötét arcú night
Így hízelgek a swart complexioned éjnek
Legyen a vers végtelen, barbár és vad,
Sötét arcú dühhel csak így dacolhat
Legyen a vers végtelen

28
How can I then return in happy plight
That am debarred the benefit of rest?
When day's oppression is not eased by night,
But day by night and night by day oppressed.
And each (though enemies to either's reign)
Do in consent shake hands to torture me,
The one by toil, the other to complain
How far I toil, still farther off from thee.
I tell the day to please him thou art bright,
And dost him grace when clouds do blot the heaven:
So flatter I the swart-complexioned night,
When sparkling stars twire not thou gild'st the even.
But day doth daily draw my sorrows longer,
And night doth nightly make grief's length seem stronger.
29
When in disgrace with Fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon my self and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least,
Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
(Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven's gate,
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings,
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Since brass, nor stone, nor earth, nor boundless sea,
But sad mortality o'ersways their power,
How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,
Whose action is no stronger than a flower?
O how shall summer's honey breath hold out,
Against the wrackful siege of batt'ring days,
When rocks impregnable are not so stout,
Nor gates of steel so strong but time decays?
O fearful meditation, where alack,
Shall Time's best jewel from Time's chest lie hid?
Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back,
Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?
O none, unless this miracle have might,
That in black ink my love may still shine bright.
