Fall o Viipuri, 20 June 1944, Source: Sotatoimet p.232
General Eric Vihma was thrown into the gap, at rst allingback, but then holding. By 1 July Soviet orces were strung
out in columns along the road between ali and Ihantalaand su ering increasing losses rom artillery, ank attacks by Finnish and German StuG assault guns, in antry with thenew anti-tank weapons, and Finnish and German aircra t.
Finally 6th Divisions Jallkavki Regiment 12 (JR12) haltedthe Soviet spearhead at Ihantala Hill on 30 June. Still, ercebattles continued as the Soviets tried to orce another break-through. Finnish intelligence discovered the time and placeand pulverised the orming up area with over 250 guns. Te
nal Soviet attacks were stopped dead. A ter 9 July Sovietattacks petered out and the area settled down to a stalemate.
Te Finns dug in and withtheir artillery support could notbe shi ted. Over 12 days theSoviets had lost over 300 tanksand at least 22,000 casualties,
while the Finns lost 8000 casu-alties. Te VK line had beenbent but not broken.
o utflAnking AttemptS At v iipurinlAhti And v uoSAlmi As the tide at the ali-Ihantalabattle was beginning to turnagainst the Soviet orces, attempts were made to attack around either ank o theIhantala position. o the westand north-west o Viipuri lay the bay o Viipuri (Viipurinlahtiin Finnish). Te resh Soviet59th Army attempted to crossthe bay by boat in an islandhopping strategy on 1 July.Soviet troops were attacked stillin their boats and immediately a ter landing on shore and de-cisively de eated, the last troopsbeing withdrawn by 10 July.
o the east o ali, the Soviets again tried to out ank theFinns holding along the Vuoksi River line. Soviet 98th corpsattacked and orced the de enders across the river in heavy battles lasting ve days. Te Soviets committed a urtherthree divisions across the river to exploit the bridgehead, leading to a bitter melee on the north shore o the Vuoksi.Te combined e orts o the 2nd Division, artillery, air orce, tanks and Jkri (light in antry) o the Panssari Divisionmanaged to contain the assault orce, which became trappedon the open terrain in the north bank. In this battle alonethe Soviets lost over 15,000 men and the Finns 6000. JR7o 2nd Division took almost 75% casualties, but did notbreak.

B AttleS n orth of l Ake l AdogATe second part o the Soviet plan had been to trap Finnish
orces in Karelia to the east. Te Soviet attack began on the21 June and on the same day managed to cross the SvirRiver and gain a signi cant break-in. Finnish troops rom IICorps and Group Aunus then ought a ghting withdrawalby establishing one delaying position a ter another. By 10
July the Finnish troops had manned the so-called U-line
located inside the pre-Winter War border. Te Soviet 7th Army was unable to break through U-line. Te Soviets thenswitched ocus against II Corps north o the U-line. Battlescontinued until the beginning o August when the Sovietsstopped all their attacks.
ilomAntSi the f inAl m otti B AttleIn the north, a short distanceeast o Ilomantsi, rom 31 July to 13 August, Finnish and Soviet
orces were locked in combat or what would turn out to be thelast time. By 4 August two Sovietdivisions had been surroundedby Group Raappana. On 9
August the main body o thetwo divisions broke out throughthe surrounding Finnish troopsto the east with the loss o mosto their heavy equipment.
t he price of peAceBy August the ront had stabilised to trenches and staticde ence along roughly the 1940 Finnish Soviet boundary.
A truce was negotiated prior to a ull peace treaty cominginto e ect in September.
Te conditions o the treaty required Finland to demobi-lise most o its army, and eject German orces in Lapland.Tis was a task troops had little enthusiasm or. It led to asix month campaign that ended in stalemate in the barrenarctic landscape. Despite a Finnish amphibious landing at
ornio, and out anking attempts, the last o the German20th Mountain army crossed into Norway at Kilpisjrvi in
April 1945.
t he ButcherS BillTe scale o ghting on the Finnish ront in the 1944summer o ensive was immense. In the three months romthe start o the Soviet o ensive on 9 June to the cease reon 4 September the Finns lost 60,000 casualties, including15,000 dead, most in the rst month o ghting. For theFinns the losses per day were even more than in the Winter
War. Over our years rom 1941 to 1944 the Continuation
War had cost the Finns 250,000 casualties including 60,000dead. Still by the end o the war they were the only country in Eastern Europe that remained independent.
Te Soviet 1944 o ensive had been much better plannedthan in 1939 and their troops ar better trained, but Soviet
losses were still heavy. Sources di er on Soviet casualties, but in total they are likely to have exceeded 150,000 menand 600 tanks or the 1944 summer o ensive - a ratio o three Soviet casualties or every one Finnish casualty in the1944 ghting. Given that the Soviets were attacking throughrugged woods and lake country, this is not surprising. Indeedit compares avourably with Allied casualties attacking posi-tions such as Cassino in Italy. (In the Winter War the Sovietslost over 400,000 casualties against 60,000 Finnish, a ratio o seven to one.) otal Soviet Continuation War casualty esti-mates vary rom over 400,000 (Krivosheev) to over 600,000(Manninen) including 300,000 dead.

Self SufficientTe Finnish Army is composed o armers and hunters, usedto an outdoor li estyle and making their own decisions.Teir training emphasised this sel -sufciency.
Finnish Platoons use the German Mission actics special rule (see page 166 o the rulebook).
h unterSFinland is a country o orests and lakes and the natives know their country well. Tey are able to quickly move throughthis difcult terrain with ease. Skiing is the national sportin Finland, as well as a necessity or travelling cross-country.Finnish platoons are ski-equipped, increasing their mobility during winter.
Finnish In antry and Man-packed Gun teams treat Woods as Cross-country errain instead o Di cult Going and Forests as Di cult Going instead o Very Di cult Going (see page 31 o the rulebook), allowing them to move At the Double through Woods, but not denser Forests.
In the winter Finnish In antry and Man-packed Gun teams treat deep snow as Cross-country errain instead o Di cult Going (see page 244 o the rulebook), allowing them tomove At the Double across deep snow covered terrain.
Bitter enemieSTe Finns are a stubborn people used to adversity. Tesurvival o their country is at stake. All Finnish troops are
prepared to ght at close quarters i needed to see o theinvading Red Army.
Finnish orces gain the British Bulldog special rule (see page 171 o the rulebook) when ghting against any Soviet orce.
h eAvy BreAkthrough g unTe captured ISU-152 used by the Finns was tted witha power ul 152mm gun that is able to destroy almost any target.
In antry, Gun teams and Unarmoured vehicles auto-matically ail their saves when hit by the main gun o anISU-152 heavy assault gun. A Firepower est may still be required to destroy the target as normal.
AutomAted f ire c ontrolGeneral Vilho P Nenonen trained and reorganised theFinnish artillery. Now they have several innovations toimprove its per ormance. Finnish artillery organisation isvery exible and allows any Forward Observer to call down
re rom any battery in range. Major Unto Petjs new correction converter meant that artillery could respond to
orders rom any Observer very quickly, with a high degreeo accuracy.
A Finnish Observer team rom an artillery platoon (any platoon containing teams that can re bombardments)may act as the Spotting team or another artillery platoonwithout the need or a Sta team (see Spotting or Other Platoons on page 127 o the rulebook) instead o its own
platoon. When doing this they can still only spot or one platoon per turn.
Company Commander teams acting as Spotters still receive the +1 penalty to score required to Range In.
intercepted c ommunicAtionSDuring their ghting against the Soviets in 1944 the Finns
would o ten intercept Soviet radio communications. Tisgave them prior knowledge o the Red Armys attacks and
where their troops were massing. Te Finns would use thisin ormation to bring down very accurate artillery bombard-ment on the enemy positions.
Because o the excellent quality o the Finnish radio in-terception, Finnish Artillery Bombardments red by an
Artillery Battery may re-roll the third ailed attempt torange in.
I it still ails on the re-roll you have ailed to bring in your bombardment. Te Artillery Battery does not get a re-roll on their rst and second attempts.
