PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: You can dive into Fellsmere’s history at the Main Library
Fellsmere is a little town of miracles. Its history is well documented, and can be credited to four people: Walter A. Siewert, Clarence “Korky” Korker, Jamie Vans, and Jan Gay. All collections can be found in the Archive Center at the Main Library. Walter A Siewert (1912-1998) saved and preserved 75-plus years of Fellsmere history. He moved from Virginia to Fellsmere when he was 2 years old. His collection consists of 21 boxes, which includes more than a thousand photographs and postcards, maps, drawings, historical research, business records, and family history. Korky Korker was a photographer all his life. He and his wife, Gerry, started visiting Fellsmere in 1949. They bought a home in 1966 and in 1991 they made it their permanent residence. His reputation as a photographer soon became well-known and he was often asked to preserve or reprint many of the old photographs from pioneers of the Fellsmere community. He soon became the “historian” of Fellsmere.
Around 2004, I met Jamie Vans of Gloucestershire on the Internet. Jamie is the grandson of Marian Fell, the daughter of the city’s founder, Edward Nelson Fell. Vans offered to share his pre-1900 Florida photographs of the Fell family, which totaled over 1,400. He also shared paintings by Marian Fell that are now displayed in the library. This was an incredible gift. Jan Gay has been a dedicated volunteer for the
Archive Center since 1992. Every Monday, she arrives early and works 5-6 hours on the county’s vertical files. She is responsible for creating and organizing Fellsmere files such as churches, mayors, and police chiefs. Consequently, we have extensive research material on Fellsmere not in other collections. The library is grateful to those who helped to preserve Fellsmere’s history. Please use the library online catalog to learn more.

• I love to listen to people talk about strategy – that’s why I find the political discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to be so engaging. Likewise, two years ago, I thoroughly enjoyed the process of developing the initial strategy for Lemmon Lines. As publisher of a weekly newsletter, I feel like I’m an advocate for the local business community. In making the rounds, from one end of the county to the other, you come to realize we’re all in this together. That’s why I wanted to do something special for the advertisers in Lemmon Lines. On April 26, we’ll be having a 90-minute workshop called “Strategies to Survive the Summer.” Most of the advertisers in this issue will have a representative there. It’ll be held at the new Hampton Inn & Suites in the Miracle Mile area.
The workshop – there are four scheduled throughout the day – is open to any business in Indian River County. (If you’re interested in attending, please call me right away at 772-321-3869. Seating is limited.) I’m fortunate to have John Lindsey, of Lindsey & Associates, leading the workshops. He has held workshops throughout the country. I’ve known John for more than 15 years, and he is a real pro. I can’t wait for everyone to roll up their sleeves and talk business strategy. Thanks in advance to the attendees. Please remember, folks, this newsletter would not exist without the support of advertisers on these eight pages. They make it happen.• Every so often, my wife has to pay a library fine because

she returned a book late. It’s a ridiculously low fine (25 cents a day) … but, apparently, it all adds up. During the last fiscal year, the library collected $53,715 in fines. Two years ago, fines totaled $61,371. I never would have guessed the fines added up to mid-five figures. I would have said, at most, $2,000.• What’s going to be built in the recently cleared parcel of land just west of Velde Ford, you ask? It’ll be a Dollar General Store, according to John McCoy, the county’s director of current development.• So I stop by Minuteman Press to pick up copies of the following week’s issue of Lemmon Lines and Tiffany Justice, a candidate for the School Board, happens to be there. Before leaving, I joke that she has a great name for a political candidate. She said a judge would be the ideal position for someone with the last name of Justice. “If I knew I was going to marry a Justice, I would have become a lawyer,” she said.
• Paul Janensch was left scratching his head after reading this message on a sign at the entrance to a pathway to the beach: “No animals except handicap assisted” Paul said: “It’s fortunate that most of us can figure out what that means, but the wording doesn’t make sense. The only approved animals are those that are handicapped and being assisted?” He suggested this for the wording: “No animals except service dogs.” Bingo! Paul, a former newspaper editor, is a seasonal resident who does a weekly Treasure Coast Essay for WQCS (88.9 FM) and wqcs.org.• The Indian River County Intergenerational Recreation Facility (the big structure you see north of Oslo Road just before 20th Avenue) is scheduled to open in June. Hmmm. Is it too late to change the name? Come on, it’s a big-time clunker!

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
After he was shot down a third time in Vietnam, Dick Cantner – pilot of an Army two-man attack helicopter – had the opportunity to move away from the front lines and take on an administrative role. He opted to stay engaged in combat. For the final five months of his tour, he served as an infantry platoon leader. He’s that kind of guy. Dick, who turns 70 next month, served in Vietnam from 1969 to ’71. He showed the same type of gumption upon returning to the private sector in ’73. He spent 15 years with a steel company, working his way up to operations manager, then decided to become an entrepreneur.
He operated three businesses in West Lawn, Pennsylvania, under the umbrella of Clean, Inc. – Country Fresh Laundry, Yorgey’s Fine Cleaning and Auto Cleaning Court. He would later buy a Hallmark store and even dabbled in food with the Gourmet Corner. While juggling his businesses, he joined the Navy Reserve in 1998. Dick has lived in Vero Beach for the past 11 years.
When he moved here, he started working at his brother’s dry cleaning company. Since 2011, he has been a certified business consultant with Indian River State College’s Small Business Development Center. His passion now is helping people start their own businesses. He can’t picture himself sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair. “If I retired, what would I do?” he said. He’s not one to stay idle, that’s for sure.
Dick Cantner
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
Indian River County maintains 37 parks. In doing so, crews mow more than 1,500 acres. The breakdown of acres mowed: 1,497 are “passive” acres and 33 are “athletic” acres. In addition, the county’s Parks Division maintains eight boat ramps.
Fun factsTop 500 countdown
All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.
