Katniss Everdeen – The Hero
•Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen year old girl who lives in a post-apocolyptic society that is split into twelve different districts. She lives in District 12.
•District 12 is known to be one of the poorer districts. Many of the people in the district starve and cannot afford food for their families.
Katniss Everdeen is not a social person She often keeps to herself and does not have
many friends The only people she cares about are her mother,
her sister Primrose, and her hunting partner, Gale.
Her main priorities are hunting for food to feed her family, and taking care of her sister
When Primrose’s name is drawn at the Reaping, Katniss knows that she must take her sister’s place
She is very scared, but she knows that she does not want her sister to have to go through the Hunger Games, so she volunteers to take Primrose’s place
Katniss is a hero because she sacrifices her own life for those that she loves
She protects those that are important to her, no matter what the cost
• She always stands up for what she believes in, no matter what others may think• Katniss finds flaws in the society, and thinks of ways to overcome them
Katniss had several obstacles throughout her journey that she was able to overcome The death of Rue was very hard for Katniss to face; she blamed herself for not being there to protect Rue
• Lying to Peeta and pretending to be in love with him was very hard for Katniss; she didn’t want to lie to him but she knew that she must in order to get the supplies and outside support that they needed to survive during the Games
Katniss is also a hero because of her kindness and caring nature
› She would not kill any of the tributes unless they were attacking her› Katniss refused to kill Peeta at the end to become the
sole victor, instead she chose to eat the poisonous berries with Peeta
The Warning The society in the Hunger Games is split into twelve separate districts and ruled by one man, President Snow Every district has specific jobs for the people in that district. For example, District 12 is mainly madeup of coal miners
Every year, the Capitol holds the “Hunger Games”› One boy and one girl, ranging anywhere from
age 12 to 18, is selected from each district› All the selected tributes must participate in
the Hunger Games, in which they must all fight to the death until only one tribute remains
› This is all televised throughout all of the districts for everyone to watch and enjoy
Connection to Our Society The Capitol forces the Hunger Games to happen every
year to remind all of its people what rebelling can lead to› The Games is to refresh people’s memory what war is
like so that they will not disobey orders This could happen to us if we were to ever go through a
war against our own country› A civil war could destroy our country and could in turn
put someone in charge like President Snow who could decide to split our society up into different districts
› We could lose all of our freedom and individualism
