Escorts have played a pivotal role in the agriculturalgrowth of India for over five decades.
It is one of the leading tractor manufacturers of the
country with a manufacturing capacity of 75,000 tractorsper year.
Escorts produces tractors in the 27-75 HP range -underthree brand names, viz. Escorts, Powertrac and
FarmtracKMC stands for KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENTCENTRE. It is the Research and Development wing ofEscorts Ltd.

The R&D Centre uses advanced 3D modellingsoftware [i.e. UG NX 7.5 ] to analyse the various typesof faults in the tractors and optimizing them by
redesigning.

OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to study the variousergonomic parameters used in the designing of tractorsand compare these parameters with the tractors of various
rival companies and suggest the changes to be made sothat the tractor becomes ergonomically comfortable to theoperator of tractor .

Ergonomics is the study of designing equipmentsand devices that fit the human body, its movementsand cognitive ability
It is the scientific discipline concerned with theunderstanding of interaction among humans andother elements of a system, and the profession thatapplies theory, principles, data and methods todesign in order to optimize human well-being andoverall systemperformance.

Agricultural workers often spend hours driving a tractorand performing various functions from working the landto the transportation part.
Some of the effects of the working for long hours are painand/or Stiffness in shoulder, neck and back.Poor bloodcirculation in the legs and the potential for thedegeneration of the spinal discs.
This is why it is important for the machine operator to take
rest and break stretches for fewminutes every hour.
Making the seat of the operator comfortable reduces alarge amount of stress and thus avoiding injuries to theoperator.

The positions of the levers and switches should besuch that they are in reach of the operator withouthim bending his back which increases the comfortlevel of the operator.
Placement of these levers should be in such a waythat there is no friction between the tractor bodyand the operators body to avoid injuries anddiscomfort for the operator.
Further, the seat of the operator should bedesigned in such a manner so as to absorbmaximum amount of the vibrations the tractor issubjected to during the field operations.

Different tractors were selected as per therequirements of the company and the competitorstractors were also so chosen so as to compare the
data.Standard values of the data to be measured wastaken from the BIS standards and documents.
Anthropometry data required to draw the layout
was collected from the Internet.

A table containing the data of the result of theergonomic study was created showing clearly the inwhich tractor switches and levers are insideandin which they lie outside.
Several ideas were suggested to improve upon thecomfort of the operator as per the varied standardvalues.
All these steps are repeated for the different
tractors as stated above
