Adolf Loos možda nije najveći arhitekt dvadesetog stoljeća, ali je uz
Le Corbusiera vjerojatno najznačajniji arhitekt-pisac.

Loosovi britki, nerijetko i cinični eseji danas imaju značaj
povijesnog dokumenta, ali nude i mogućnost novog
čitanja u vremenu u kojem je tekst o arhitekturi postao
jednako značajan ako ne i značajniji od arhitekture same.
Pitanja modernosti, ornamenta kao kulturnog fenomena,arhitekture k
ao zanata industrijalizacije kulture i
psihosocijalnog temeljenja simbolizirajuće funkcije kućei svrhovitog
predmeta, samo su neke od Loosovih glavnih
tema, iznesenih na način koji bismo rječnikom
današnjeg vremena mogli nazvati socijalnim aktivizmom.
Povezanost Adolfa Loosa s hrvatskim kulturnim
prostorom višestruka je, kroz suradnju s Hugom
Ehrlichom i Zlatkom Neumannom te sudjelovanje u
natječaju za hotel Esplanade u Zagrebu, a evidentirana je i
u tematskom broju časopisa Arhitektura.

• austrijski arhitekt češkog porijekla
• 3 godine u SAD-u radio kao parketar i zidar
• susret sa Luisom Sullivanom i Čikaškom školom presudan
• po povratku u Europi projektira puritanske građevine
• pionir Bečke moderne - jednostavne linije, RAUMPLAN
• sudjelovao na natječaju za projekt Hotela Esplanade u Zagrebu
ali njegov rad nije pobijedio

ORNAMENT I ZLOČIN
• 1908. napisao sporni članak ORNAMENT I ZLOČIN
= manifest integralnog funkcionalizma
• usmjeren na arhitekte secesije - ukras suvišan
• svi stilovi i svi ornamenti za njega laž
• potrebni novi oblici i linije određeni zahtjevima života
• spojiti ljepotu arhitekture s njenom funkcionalnošću
• istražuje ideju da je napredak kulture povezan s nestankom
ukrasa svakodnevnih predmeta
• stoga zločin siliti obrtnike ili graditelje da gube svoje
vrijeme na ukrašavanje koje je služilo da ubrza vrijeme kada je
objekt već zastario

My architecture is not conceived in plans, but in spaces (cubes). I
do not design floor plans, facades, sections. I design spaces. For
me, there is no ground floor, first floor, etc...For me, there are
only contiguous, continual spaces, rooms, anterooms, terraces,
etc. Storeys merge and spaces relate to each other.
