THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF BALLISTEC CARBON CONSTRuCTION:
BALLISTEC NANOThe ultimate in carbon technology. This construction pairs our ballisTec hi-moD structure with a nano-particle-infused resin which creates a supporting matrix within the carbon structure. This nano particle matrix adds significant strength and stiffness, which means we need less material to achieve the frames desired characteristics. extremely costly and difficult to work with, ballisTec nano is found only on the top of the line SuperSix eVo model.
BALLISTEC HI-mODon the hi-moD frames, we use the same base structure, but a sophisticated mix of high and ultra-high modulus fibers are used to create the stiffening network. Due to their extreme rigidity, we can gain tremendous stiffness with less material, which keeps the overall structure weight to a minimum.
BALLISTEC CARBONThe same structure, lay-up and shapes as the hi-moD versions but the stiffness and ride feel are dialed in with a higher percentage of intermediate-modulus fibers. This additional material adds a slight amount of weight but enables us to offer ballisTec technology to more riders.
ballisTec is cannondales proprietary method of high-strength, high-stiffness carbon construction. it is the ideal blend of the most advanced materials in the world combined with the most advanced carbon engineering and design. The results speak for themselves. in mountain bikes, it lets us build exceptionally strong, light bikes like the F-series, overmountain and Scalpel lines. on the road, it enables us to push the boundaries of light weight while tightly controlling the frames overall stiffness and ride feel on bikes like the SuperSix eVo, Superx and all-new Synapse.
it starts with a base structure composed of ultra-strong fibers originally created by the military for ballistic armoring, and high-strength, high-impact resins similar to what is used in the construction of carbon baseball bats; light, stiff and designed to endure thousands of cycles. We combine these fibers and this resin in a lay-up designed to maximize the anisotropic (direction-specific) qualities of the fibers in a carbon structure that is extremely light, extremely stiff and capable of withstanding high loads without damage or loss of structural integrity. This enables the frames to pass all of our extremely tough destructive and fatigue testing. To tune the overall stiffness and ride-feel of the frame, we strategically add the stiffer, but more brittle higher modulus fibers to create an interconnected network of stiffening fibers throughout the frame. This allows us to precisely tune in different amounts of stiffness and deflection at different points throughout the frame, creating an unbelievably balanced and nuanced ride.

SmARTFORmED ALLOYThe distilled result of three decades of accumulated aluminum construction experience, SmartForming techniques deliver incredibly precise wall-thickness distribution and tube shapes, concentrating material exactly where needed to maximize stiffness and strength, while shaving every last extraneous gram from the structure. internally, all butting is accomplished via smooth, tapered transitions to eliminate the abrupt changes in material thickness which cause stress-risers. unlike the putty-and-paint smooth welds of our competition, cannondales legendary double-pass smooth welds create the strongest possible joints. combined with our post-weld, heat-treat process that creates a true uni-body finished structure, youve got simply the most advanced aluminum frames available anywhere. While most SmartFormed frames in our line-up use highly manipulated 6061 aluminum, the incredible caaD10 utilizes a 6069 alloy with higher tensile strength and better elongation. With this alloy, we can use less material and retain exceptional stiffness and strength.
OPTImIzED ALLOYnot every frame can be SmartFormed. its simply too costly and labor intensive but, make no mistake, that passion for high-performance aluminum carries throughout our line. our optimized alloy frames feature many of the sophisticated framebuilding techniques found on the unmatchable SmartFormed frames. refined butting, precisely controlled tube shapes and our exceptional double-pass welds combine to create frames that others would be proud to call their best. SAVE mICRO-SuSPENSION TECHNOLOGYSaVe technology is all about reducing road shock and vibration. by pairing precise tube shapes with sophisticated carbon lay up or highly manipulated aluminum, we are able to create areas on the fork, seat-tube and seatpost that can deflect to absorb shock, while staying completely rigid laterally and torsionally. The enhanced vertical compliance provided by these combined
features greatly improves comfort and performance.

REAR TRIANGLE AND FORK: SmALL TO mEDIum BumPSmuch like with SpeeD SaVe, in SaVe pluS the rear triangle and fork are designed to work together as a system, allowing the wheels to track the ground whether the rider is seated or standing. The seat stays use unique helixed shape that both bends and compresses under load like a spring, while the fork has a curved shape and offset dropouts that enable it to offer balanced vertical compliance with excellent steering precision.

SEAT POST AND SEAT TuBE: mEDIum TO LARGE BumPSThe smaller diameter 25.4mm round seatpost offers more compliance than larger diameter posts, an effect which is amplified by the collarless, wedge style seat clamp design. Without a seat collar extending above the top tube, more of the seatpost is exposed and able to flex and absorb shock. The seatpost is complimented by a seat tube that, due to its carbon layup and scalloped, flattened design, is able to bow in concert with the seatpost, maximizing comfort when the rider is seated.

CARBON LAYuP: FINE-TO-SmALL BumPSThe Synapses carbon layup was designed to maximize something called inter-laminar shear dissapation. basically this means that the fibers are oriented in such a way that vibrations get caught up in the layers and are diffused before they can make it to rider. This helps tune out that energy-sapping road buzz and keeps you fresher.

SPEED SAVERACE ORIENTED SAVE FEATuRESmuch like the suspension on F1 cars, SpeeD SaVe features are engineered to help the bike roll faster, not simply to make it more comfortable. emphasizing light weight and torsional rigidity, SpeeD SaVe delivers improved rolling speed, better acceleration, and dramatically improved cornering speed without negatively affecting power transfer.
SpeeD SaVe works primarily via the balance between rear triangle and the fork. on the rear triangle, both the chainstays and the seatstays are able to flex slightly vertically to absorb shock, while up front, the forks offset dropouts and lay-up allow it to have a
matched amount of deflection. This creates a true micro-suspension system that allows the wheels to track over imperfect surfaces, whether the rider is seated or standing. This provides better traction and handling, higher speeds and faster cornering.
The second part of the system concentrates on rider comfort. The seat tube features a directionally optimized carbon layup which allows it to deflect slightly fore and aft, which diffuses vibration and impacts and reduces the energy-sapping muscle micro-trauma caused by long days in the saddle.

HOLLOwGRAm SISL2 wITH OPI SPIDERINGLIGHTER wEIGHT wITH ImPROVED SHIFTINGThe evolution of the revolution. 13 years ago, the original cannondale hollowgram crank started the bb30 revolution and set a new standard for ultra-light, super-stiff cranks. The most current evolution of the hollowgram, the SiSl2, continues this tradition of radical innovation. These hollow cranks are created by bonding together two machined, heat-treated clamshell halves with a super-strong anaerobic bonding agent. extensive Fea modeling and physical testing have allowed us to refine the internal and external shapes for the ultimate in stiffness-to-weight. The result is a crank light and stiff enough for our top road race machines but still so tough, we use it on our mountain bikes as well.
as beautiful as the cranks are, the most eye-catching feature of the cranks is the opi Spiderring. inspired by auto racing wheels, the 10-arm spider and both
chainrings are 3D forged and machined from a single block of aluminum. This one-piece design saves weight and reduces chainring deflection for crisper, more precise shifts. The Spidering is available in both 53/39 and 50/34 options and is retrofittable to all hollowgram cranks.

HOLLOwGRAm SIour patented opi 3D forging process enables us to build hollow, seamless crankarms that are not only extremely light but also incredibly strong and stiff. in fact, they are the stiffest, strongest crankarms weve ever made. as light as the first-generation hollowgram cranks and completely compatible with every hollowgram spider and chainring set-up, the Si brings hollowgram performance to more pricepoints than ever.
BB330/BB30Abback in 2000, cannondale revolutionized bottom bracket technology by oversizing the bottom bracket shell and replacing the heavy, flexy steel bb spindle with a 30mm aluminum spindle with a unique, stress-reducing wave-taper crank interface. The result was bb30, a system that is not only significantly lighter, but also significantly stiffer than traditional designs. We released the design as a free industry standard and the rest, as they say, is history. bb30 is now available in many different spindle widths and and configurations to fit different designs but the 30 mm spindle and wave-taper crank interface remain the same.
an example of this is the new bb30a found on the Synapse. The "a" stands for asymmetric - the bb30a adds 5mm to the non-drive side of the bb shell for a wider, stiffer base. To accomodate the wider bb shell,
the bb30a gets a longer spindle and the non-drive side crankarm angle is changed to maintain the same Q factor and even out ankle clearance on both sides. cannondale hollowgram bb30a cranks will work on both bb30 (68mm bb width) and bb30a (73mm bb width) by changing the non-drive side spacers.

(SYNAPSE ENDuRANCE RACE GEOmETRY)as befits a bike intended for rougher races and long days in the saddle, S.e.r.g. provides the ideal balance between pure aggressive race geometry and upright "comfort" geometry. Slightly longer wheelbases, slightly slacker head tube angles, a bit more bb drop and a head tube height that is around 2.5cm taller than the elite race bikes all combine to deliver handling that is racy and precise, yet supremely confident and stable when things get rough.

AERO SAVE mICRO-SuSPENSION SYSTEm - REAR TRIANGLEThe naero Tech seatstays are tiny, just 8mm wide, for exceptional bump absorption and very low aerodynamic drag. The aeroplane chainstays twist from behind the brake to the dropout to present a small wing-shaped profile to the wind. This allows them to deflect vertically with the seatstays to reduce vibration and absorb shock, and maximizes bb stiffness.
REAL TRI GEOmETRYThe Slice's seat angle is 1-2 degreees steeper than average and its reach measurements are extended to match. When paired with shorter cranks, this allows the rider to stay centered on the bike and maintain their ideal hip angle, without having to slide the saddle way forward or use longer stems, which can negatively affect handling. Since we use shorter cranks, bb height is also lower for improved stability and cornering.
wIND-TuNNEL PRESSuRE DRAG REDuCTION CHANNELThe seat tube is designed to cover as much of the rear wheel as possible, directing air flow smoothly over the wheel. The WindTunnel channel behind the seat tube reduces the pressure drag caused by air packing up between the spinning wheel and the frame, allowing the wheel to spin more freely.
TAP (TRuNCATED AERO PROFILE) TuBE SHAPESThe truncated aero shape designs "fool" the wind into thinking it's a full aero tear-drop shape, but they are significantly lighter and stiffer than traditional aero shapes and, because of their reduced profile, they are less affected by cross-winds.
NARROw IS AEROnarrow frame tube cross-sections, 8mm wide seat stays, a 1-1/8" steerer (not tapered like most) and a blade-thin, 18mm wide seatpost all work together to reduce frontal area, which reduces drag.
