• New middle school activities are called CFNC Compass

• Existing paper-based activities served as the foundation

• Provide middle school students with interactive, multimedia-based activities that will guide them through key steps in career and college planning using various tools on CFNC.org

• Accessible from various devices

High Level Learning Outcomes

• Using CFNC Compass, middle school students will be able to: – Explore who they are, where they are heading

and the importance of setting goals – Understand the academic preparation that’s

needed to be career and college ready – Explore career options related to their

interests, personality, skills, and values – Learn about college costs and the various ways

to pay and save for college – Explore various college options

CFNC Compass for 8th Graders Pilot Results

• 254 8th graders from 12 middle schools participated in the (Fall 2012/Spring 2013) pilot program

• Students said they learned the following: – The importance of using my high school portfolio on CFNC.org

– The importance of identifying my goals instead of leaving my future up to chance

– How to set goals and establish a time frame to achieve them

– There are many paths that lead to various careers

– How to search for colleges on CFNC.org

– Besides tuition, there are additional college costs

– Ways to pay for college

– The importance of knowing what my interests are to help me explore careers

– There are various types of colleges in North Carolina

CFNC Compass for 8th Graders Pilot Results

• Four middle schools participated in our in-depth statistical analysis component (Spring 2013) led by researchers from NC State University

• Students took Pre/Post Assessments

• Preliminary Findings: – Students gained knowledge of the various ways

CFNC.org can help them with: • Applying to college

• What they need in order to perform well in honors/AP courses

• Keeping track of things

• Learning about the different ways to pay for college

CFNC Compass Status

• Pilot phase has just ended (March)

• Feedback is now being used to improve activities (March – May)

• Accessible to counselors in Summer 2014
