In the recent years, many new port terminals have been developed in the downstream area, and these new terminals are mostly specialized in container handling, dividing Hai Phong Port terminals into two main groups: container in the downstream area and conventional cargoes in the upper area of the CAM river estuary.

LOGICTICS
This rapid increase shows a positive growth of the area economy, but in terms
of logistics, it caused many problems and challenges to the Port operations. It
is estimated that over 80% of cargo from Hai Phong Port is transported by
road, the remaining volume is shared by rail and inland waterways

PORT OF HAI PHONG
LOGICTICS
This imbalance in the share between the three transportation modes is just a
very big issue for Hai Phong Port operation as the roads are not capable
enough to satisfy the port demands on receiving and delivery of
import/export cargoes. Just because of the in-city locations, many terminals
have gates directly linked to the streets of the city of Hai Phong, where the
port traffics interferes with the urban daily traffics

In addition to that, the imbalance between export and import volumes, plus uneven distributions of cargoes among terminals resulting in severe traffics congestions, especially at the peak times

solutions
The government of Viet Nam and Hai Phong city authority are fully aware of this issue and have taken many measures to ease the situation, including:
- Development of new roads
- Improvement of the city traffics management
- Improvement of the of rail and inland waterways transportation capability.
- Gradually move the port facilities to an outer city location, exposing to sea so that the navigation access channel can be shortened to minimum (from the existing 42.8 km to about less than 10 km) with much better water depth (expected -16m without tide difference) and, what is much more important, avoidance the interference between port operation and the city activities

As a support to the new port operations, the government of Vietnam has also decided to construct a new bridge connecting Catba Island and the mainland of Hai Phong, which is directly linked to the newly opened express way connecting Hai Phong and Ha Noi as a main consumption center of Hai Phong Port
