Whyistheoceanmixedwhenwe never see anymixing? Darkmixing. In both cases you need toknow about fluid mechanics and turbulence and fossil turbulence to get rightanswers. Turbulence theory is evenworse. Because of a poem, everyone thinkstheyknowturbulencecascadesfromlargescalestosmall,butitisperfectlyobviousbyobserving thegrowthof a turbulentwakeora jetora turbulentanything thatturbulencealwaysgrowsfromsmallscalestolarge.Whyplanets? Planet‐massgravitational fragmentsappearwhenmatterproducedbythebigbanggetscoolenoughtoturnfromplasmatogas.It’seasy.Youknowtheviscosityanddensityof thegasandyouknow the rate theuniverse is expanding.Chugandplug.Ittooktwentyminutes.Earth‐massgasplanetsnowfrozensolidarewidelyseparatedtomatchthedensityandare inclumpsofa trilliontomatchtheJeansacousticmassofamillionstars.Anothertwentyminutes.Icanteachthistofreshmen.Everystarisformedfrommergersofplanets,andhasthirtymillionmoreofitsownthatitkeepseatingtillitgetsoverweightandexplodes.Thetimingwasperfect.TheHubbleSpaceTelescopeteamandC.R.O’Dellhadjustproduced the Helix Planetary Nebula image showing thousands of evaporatingplanetsandRudySchildhadjustpublishedhisquasarmicrolensingpaperwiththesameconclusion:thedarkmatterofgalaxiesisnotstarsbutplanetsinclumps.

So why are oceanographers not thrilled to know the turbulence in the ocean ismostly fossil turbulence and the mixing is done by fossil turbulence waves inbeamed zombie turbulence maser action mixing chimneys? Why are turbulenceexpertsnothappytorealizeturbulenceisaneddy‐likestateoffluidmotionwherethe inertialvortex forcesof turbulenteddiesare larger thananyother forces thattendtodamptheeddiesout,sothatthecascadeofturbulencemustbefromsmallscales to large? Whyarecosmologistsnot thrilled toknowthestandardmodelofcosmologytheyuseiswrong,butcanbeeasilyfixedwithalittlefluidmechanics?It’sallaboutmoneyandmarketing.Mostoceanographersareonsoftmoneyandsoare most astrophysicists. They dare not stray from standard models or theircontracts will not be renewed and their papers not published. This works for alifetimecareerinoceanography,butitcannotworkmuchlongerincosmology.Thefloodofexcellentnewdatawillnotpermitit.Bothpeerreviewsystemsarebrokenand corrupt but cosmology cannot resist the facts much longer. Likewise, from the 1934 San FranciscoGeneralStriketoJusticeforJanitorsinthe1980sand1990s,Californiaworkingpeoplehaverepeatedlytranslatedtheirpassionforjusticeanddignityintotheslogan'aninjurytoone,isaninjurytoall.'Thelaborandcivilrightsmovements,tobesure,aren'tfairytales,andtheheroicmomentsareoftencounterbalancedbythepetrificationofmilitancyintoleadenbureaucracyandtheselfishcalibrationofseniority.Solidarityistoooftenanorphan.Inourcase,therearedishearteningexamplesofthetenuredstrataignoringtherecentpicket‐linesofcateringworkers,secretaries,lecturers,andstudents.

UCfaculty,indeed,aremuchliketheresidentsofJonathanSwift'scityofLaputa:distractedbytheirdepartmentalmicropoliticsandthedistributionofFTEswhiletheyfloatonacloudabovetheexistentialdistressofK‐12andcommunityeducation.TheSenatefacultyalsomustshareresponsibilitywiththeRegentsforthesystem'stransformationintoavastmachineforthetransformationofpublicresearchintocorporateprofit.MostUCcampusesnowmoreresemblegatedcommunitiesthanpublictemplesoflearning.Alotofushavecomplainedaboutthissituationforyears,butourdiscomforthasseldommovedustoaction.Butthechallengeisnowepic‐historic:equityandjusticeareendangeredateveryleveloftheMasterplanforEducation.Obscenewealthstillsprawlsacrossthecoastalhills,butflat‐landinnercitiesandblue‐collarinteriorvalleysfacethedeathoftheCaliforniadream.Theirchildren‐let'snotbeataroundthebush‐arebeingpushedoutofhighereducation.Theirfutureisbeingcutoffatitsknees.TheSeptember24strikemovement,inmyopinion,ismostimportantbecauseitdefendsnon‐tenuredemployeesanddemandspublicdisclosureoftheRegents'secretdiplomacy.Itisanelementaryreflexofaprogressive,humaneconsciousness:anantidotetothestaggeringselfishnessandelitismofAndrewScullandhisGangof23.Astrike,bymatchingactionstowords,isalsothehighestformofteach‐in.Thisseedofresistance,ofcourse,willonlygrowtomaturitythroughcultivationbyunionizedemployeesandstudents.Theyaretherealconstantgardeners,andhopefullybranchesofaunifiedfight‐backwillquicklyintertwinewiththeparallelstrugglesofCSU,communitycollege,K‐12andadult‐educationworkers.ThestrikealsoprovidesabullypulpittocounterthestillwidespreadbeliefthattheUCsystemhasauniquedispensationandcanonceagainnegotiateitsownspecialdealinSacramento.Manyofourcolleaguesaresimplyindenial.Thistimearound,thefirst‐classpassengersareinthesamefrigidwaterwiththekindergartenteachersandcommunitycollegejanitors.The24thisthebeginningoflearninghowtoshoutinunison.Andwhatevertheoutcome,itatallowsuswriteourbeliefsonthecoalface.*UPTE/CWAhasvotedtostrikeUConSeptember24September24,2009,istheopeningdayofFallQuarteratUCSD.
