SECTION A READING [25 marks]
I. Read the following passage and
answer the questions that follow.
Is Pluto a Planet?
By: National Geographic Kids
Many people are saying that Pluto is no longer a planet. Are
they right? Is Pluto no longer a planet? There's debate in thescientific world about this issue. National Geographic News
says that, according to the International Astronomical Union,
a full-fledged planet is an object that orbits the sun and is
large enough to have become round due to the force of its
own gravity. Because Pluto doesn't meet these standards, the IAU classifies Pluto as a dwarf planet.
Not everyone agrees that this is a good way to decide,
though. Andy Cheng, a planetary scientist at Johns Hopkins
University, says that the new rules aren't clear enough and
asks the question "how round is round? ...I'll still continue to
maintain that Pluto is a planet," he said.
Owen Gingerich is an astronomer and historian at Harvard
University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and head of the
IAU committee proposing the definition. He favored a special
distinction for Pluto. Gingerich supported a proposal to call

the big eight planets classical planets as opposed to just
plain
"planets" and Pluto and the others dwarf planets, so there
would be two classes of planets. He believes thatreclassifying Pluto as a dwarf planet is not "sensitive to the
historical and cultural role that Pluto has played."
The argument continues. In the meantime, however, many
people are correct new textbooks will list Pluto as being a
dwarf planet. What do you think it is?

the hottest planet!Venus, thesecond closestfrom the sun, hashottertemperatures thanMercury. This isbecause Venus

II. Read the following passage and
answer the questions that follow.
Mercury
by Cynthia Sherwood
Mercury is the planet nearest the sun. Its so
close that if you were standing on Mercury,
the sun would appear two and a half times
bigger than what it looks like from here on
Earth.
Even the best sunscreen wouldnt be enough
on Mercury. The suns rays are about seven
times stronger than on Earth. Mercury is dry, very hot, and practically airless. Mercury is
also the smallest planet in our solar system.
Because its often blocked by the glare of the sun, Mercury
can be hard to see without a telescope.
Mercury is named after a Roman god who was a messengerknown for his speed. As a planet, Mercury moves around the
sun faster than any other. It revolves around the sun about
once every 88 Earth days.
Mercury is made up of rock with iron at its core. Its surface
looks a lot like our moon, with many craters. Radar images
from Earth show that craters at Mercurys north and south

poles may contain frozen water, or ice. Scientists couldnt
believe it at first. Parts of Mercury reach 800 degrees
Fahrenheit (460 degrees Celsius), so they definitely didnt
expect to find ice! But it turns out the poles of Mercury arealways in the shade of the sun, so they remain extremely
cold.
By the way, youd never be able to enjoy a blue sky on
Mercury. Because theres no atmosphere, the sky always
appears black. You might even see stars during the
daytime!

Adventure in the Sacred Forest
By Michael Parasmento Mhlanga
from Gweru, Zimbabwe
A cool, chilly breeze was blowing across the Mutiusinazitavalleys. I huddled close to the shelter of a large baobab tree
in a futile attempt to escape the cold.
I was herding a small herd of goats in the valley. An idea
suddenly came to me and I decided to embark on an
adventure in the sacred forest and hunt, leaving my goats inthe valley.
I took my knobkereie and small spear and entered the forest.
For two hours I hunted and only managed to kill a small hare
and two birds. I decided to check the goats.
Suddenly there was a terrific roar from the heart of the forest
which resulted in every living creature fleeing for life like a
group of frightened children. As for me, I just stood rooted to
the spot on which I was standing. A lion emerged from the

trees. I was too terrified to flee for life or fall down. I just stood
still and my heart throbbed as if it was going to find its way
out of my chest.
The lion halted a few metres from me and I realised that it
was the historical sacred lion which had eluded death by the
gun of hunters. Some of my courage reduced, the fear
screamed like the historical madman of London. I closed my
eyes and waited for fate. Nothing happened. I opened my
eyes fearfully and stared at what the lion was doing in
amazement. For the lion was fleeing from me as if the devil
was after it. My scream had frightened it. I took to my heels
as if satan himself was after me with an edged fork. I will
never forget that ordeal.

VIII. Read the following passage and answer the
questions that follow.
An Adventure in SpaceI was part of a crew that was sent on a mission into outer
space. The mission was carried out successfully and I was
on my way back to earth with my friends.
Suddenly, an unidentified flying object appeared and it
somehow forced our spacecraft to land on another planet.
On the planet, a very strange looking creature met us. This
creature took my crew and me to see its master. I saw
another alien sitting on a very high throne. That must be their
master. It wore a crown and looked like all the strange
looking creatures in the room but its head was very much
bigger. All the aliens had four eyes, two heads and six legs.
They had a white body and no hair.
The strange unknown planet looked like a
prison, no worst a dungeon. There was a
very high wall all around the planet. It had many
buildings and everywhere you went, you could
hear the wailing sounds coming from small cells.
We were scared but they gave us some food, which smeltlike rotten fish. The smell was so strong that we had to hold

food.
The next day, we were given a long list of things to do but
they were in a language that we could not understand at all. They whipped us and put us in a small cell. After that, they
conducted experiments on us. A few of us died but the rest of
us who survived were put back into the cell.
One day, the aliens who brought us to our cell forgot to lock
the door so we escaped through the door. Soon we boarded
our own spaceship and flew back to earth. We had a
horrifying experience but no one believed us! After this, I
never dared to go into space ever again.

I can't return

The moon passes
And the sun rolls by
There is no turning backThere is no lie
I will not see my family again
And I will not see green earth

They move on for miles and miles
I try to call home
I scream as loud as I can
