When Super BowlChampion punter HunterSmith decided to retire fromfootball after 12 years in theNFL he did so with a plan inmind. The first step was tostrategically put together aneclectic group of musiciansthen couple them with aneclectic catalogue of selfwritten biographical songs.

Next came the challenge ofmelding a singer-songwriterapproach with a very seri-ous and unique countryrock sound. He pulled it off.It is called the Hunter SmithBand.

Consisting of bassist KyleWhiteley, lead guitaristJustin Langebartels, utilityman and guitarist Ethan

Ehrstine, and drummer AlexReiff the Hunter SmithBand, based in Indiana, epitomizes all that is rightabout the modern era ofpop country/rock music.“I’m not a discontent per-son,” Smith says, “but I wasgrowing unhappy with thedirection of pop music forsome time. Maybe thissounds idealistic, but Ibelieve you can have both –artistic integrity and a rele-vant sound. That’s whatHSB is about.” Smith con-tends this is not a typical“cross-over” effort by an ex-professional athlete. “I’vebeen writing and performingmusic all my life. This is justthe next logical step for meand for the band.” And thenext step is a good one.Crowds across the countryleave a Hunter Smith Bandshow with the sense thatthey just saw a band that isgoing somewhere.
