ANCONA LA CITTA’ DORICAAncona the doric town

simple visual experience, something
deeper, a spellbinding experience
for those who see it.

where streets, places and squares,

The Arco di Traiano, situated in the
heart of the port, is the gate leading
to the most ancient part of Ancona,
which should be explored on foot:
passing in front of the Roman walls
of the port, climb up towards the
Piazza del Senato. And here all of
the places of interest are within a
few metres of each, near the Ca-
thedral of San Ciriaco, which keeps
watch over the town and the sea,
with a magnificent panorama.

DAL TEATRO CORTESI AD UN TEATRO SOTTO IL CIELO STELLATOFrom the Cortesi Theatre to a Theatre under a star-studded sky

NUMANA LA SIGNORA DEL CONERONumana the lady of the Conero

LA LEGGENDA DEL MIRACOLOSO CROCIFISSOThe legend of the miraculous Crucifix

the wild beaches of the inlets of

Nestled in the green hills of Conero, Loreto has been a pilgrimage destination since ancient times and is still today one of the mainstays of Chri-stianity.The Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto is a rare example of a basilica-fortress, built over three centuries, thanks to the collaboration of talented artists including Bramante and Vanvitelli, to preserve a precious jewel at its very heart: the walls of the Holy House of Mary of Nazareth, which, according to Christian tradition, was prodigiously flown by the an-gels to Loreto. The holy house also preserves a statue of the “Black Madonna”, patron saint of aviators, and corner-stone of Marian devotion.

TRA LE COLLINE DEL CONEROAmid the Conero hills
Montefano is surrounded by ancient
walls and the original gate tower is
still standing. The town centre is a
maze of winding alleys and is well
worth a visit. Remember to look
up to admire the typical red-brick
houses! Point of interest: the house
in which Pope Marcellus II was born
is to be found among these alleys.
In Montefano you can visit two
churches in the Baroque style: the
Collegiata of San Donato where an
ancient handcrafted organ is preser-
ved (1722), and San Filippo Church
with its monastery, which has inside
the famous center of biblical studies
G. Vannucci.

small coloured caves dug out for use, in the past,

today, as summer shelters for feasts of fresh fish
and naps. In the evening the coast is transformed
into a world lit up by the lights from the caves.
How to get there: From Passetto go to Via Thaon

men covered in mud walking along, don’t panic:
in the area it is customary to help yourself to a bit
of clay from the slopes of the mountain and take
advantage of the natural clay.
How to get there: By sea or on foot on two paths,

There are many legends linked to this place; it
would seem that in the belly of this underground
quarry there is hidden treasure, kept by the spirits
of the quarrymen.
Then continue in the direction of Ancona;
here among the alleys and the voices in the
town centre you will find the Chiesa di Santa
Maria della Piazza from where you can access
an underground route to discover the temples
constructed on the site before the building of the
church.
Then go back towards the hills to Osimo to
visit the underground chambers of the town,
there are two hypogea in Osimo: the Grotte del
Cantinone accessible from Via Fonte Magna and
the Grotte Fregonara-Gallo in piazza Dante. A
maze of arcades, tunnels and underground wells
excavated in the sandstone and rich in mysteries.
(Info: IAT OSIMO 800 22 88 00 From Tues to Sun).
From here you can easily reach the village of
Camerano with its chambers dug by the Picentini
and decorated bas-reliefs and religious motives.
(The Underground Town of Camerano can only
be visited upon booking).
A different Conero, hidden underground, made of
mysteries and grandeur which you can explore in
an itinerary that leaves from the Conero Reserve
and ends in Osimo.
In the Conero Reserve, between Poggio and

the Roman quarries which can be visited free of

An itinerary that leaves from the sea and climbs
inland exploring the fortresses and fortifications
of the Conero. The Arco di Numana, in addition
to being the symbol of the town, is what remains
of the watchtower of the fourteenth-century
coastal castle.
Sirolo also had a castle that was built in the
VII century, exploiting the strategic position
overhanging the sea and protected by cliffs. Of
the castle today there remains only the village
and the two towers, the first is annexed to the
church, the second has become, for the people of
Sirolo, the Torrione.
Moving on to Loreto, you will encounter a true
and authentic stronghold of faith. Over the
course of the centuries, in order to defend the
Santa Casa from raids from the sea, defensive
bulwarks were built which can be visited in an
evocative itinerary through the chemin-de-ronde.
In Osimo only the ancient tower of the castle
remains. Continue on to Montefano where you
can breath in the harmony of this village in the
hills. Take a walk in the centre, then go to the
nearby Filottrano, a town of fashion where you
can visit one of the many designer boutiques.
From here go into the hills of the Terra dei
Castelli among the villages of Santa Maria Nuova,
Polverigi, Agugliano and Offagna the Fortress
of which represents one of the most important
examples of military architecture in the Marche.
From here go towards Ancona where you can visit
the town with its five bastions and then go on to
Portonovo to see the Napoleonic Fort and the
Torre De Bosis, which stand over the crystal clear
sea of the Riviera del Conero.

The Conero Regional Nature Reserve is a stage
of rare beauty that includes a stretch of coastline
and a vast area of hills, characterized by unique
panoramas and an ancient history.
The area includes the territories of the
municipalities of Ancona, Camerano, Numana
and Sirolo. Monte Conero is 572 metres high,
right on the sea it is the only promontory on
the coastline that stretches from Trieste to the
Gargano. The presence of unused quarries makes
the reserve an open book on the geological
history of the area and on the entire statigraphic
superposition of the Appennine Mountains of
Umbria and the Marche.

Ciriaco, the city’s patron saint, are conserved.

SULLE TRACCE DEL LOTTO NELLA RIVIERA DEL CONEROFollowing Lotto on the Riviera del Conero

LEOPARDI E RECANATILeopardi and Recanati

The sea is the centre of life for much of the
Conero area. The traditional seafood cuisine can
be sampled in the local restaurants and cafés.
From the well known stocco all’anconitana
with its typical recipe that combines Nordic cod
and Mediterranean olives and sardoncini alla
scottadito, delicious finger food to accompany a
good glass of Verdicchio. And then ciavattoni al
pesce, brodetto and moscioli!
The Brodetto (fish soup) has ancient, folk origins
that come from the habit that fishermen had of
using the fish which could not be sold. Over time
the dish has evolved, becoming more refined,
and the indisputable gem of the Marche. The
Brodetto is the typical dish Porto Recanati one
of the four historical recipes of the Marche’s
culinary arts.
The result of the creativity of the cook Velluti,
this variation from Porto Recanati goes back
to the beginning of the twentieth century and
it established itself immediately thanks to the
tradition of seafood cuisine at Porto Recanati.
This variation, in fact, has no tomato in it but
wild saffron from Mount Conero is added that
gives the dish a yellowish colour. An important
festival is dedicated to Porto Recanati’s “Brodetto
Bianco”. Brodetto Week takes place every year in
mid-June, providing the opportunity to try it, in
the local restaurants that adhere to the initiative,
at a special price.

ASSAPORARE LA CUCINA CONTADINA TRA FILOTTRANO E MONTEFANOEnjoy the cuisine of the countryside between Filottrano and Montefano
In the hills of the Conero you can enjoy the
traditional country cuisine at the local festivals
such as the Festa della Trebbiatura at Filot-
trano (July) or the Sapori D’Autunno (taste of
autumn - late October) at Montefano, but also
in the numerous restaurants where old style
dishes are still served, sometimes elegantly
reinterpreted.
“Maccherù de ‘o batte” is a typical dish of
Filottrano prepared during the grain harvest.
Durum wheat pasta with a sauce made of
minced meat, sausages, goose entrails or of
duck and tomato. And Frascarelli, a dish made
of rice, water and flour, served with a sauce
of sausage, olive oil and pork ribs or with the
classic meat and tomato sauce.
Typical of the area are the anicetti, large biscu-
its flavoured with aniseed.
Many of Filottrano’s delicacies have been
recognized by the Ministry as quality regional
products.
At Montefano you will be able to enjoy the
cuisine of the Macerata area. A first course not
to be missed is cargiù, large ravioli filled with
ricotta and served with either a fresh tomato
or mushroom sauce followed by a second
course of boiled meats with the speciality gru-
gni (wild greens seasoned with oil and lemon).
And the grugni are also the ingredient of a
special risotto, typical of this area. The sweets
to try are those made for Carnival, the sfrappe
and the scroccafusi, and the more classic
castagnole.
Speaking of food traditions, Montefano has an
interesting production of wines and refined
olive oil, who are the protagonists of the local
tradition along with classic cured meats.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, This page, a selection of Conero flavours; from the top: calcioni (sweet fried ravioli); below: mixed boiled meats and grugni.

SULLE TRACCE DEL SACRO: TRA SANTUARI E RELIQUIEOn the tracks of the sacred: between sanctuaries and relics
72. THE HOLY HOUSE OF LORETO
From Palestine to Italy, carried in flight by angels,
the Santa Casa della Madonna was first deposited
in the countryside near Porto Recanati, where
today there is the Chiesetta della Banderuola,
and then placed on the hill of Loreto where the
Basilica was built later on. Three simple stone
walls were witness to the Annunciation and of
the childhood of Jesus. Today ,inside this humble
residence, it is possible to find an unexpected
calm where the faithful gather in prayer around
the statue of the Madonna.
73. FROM SAN CIRIACO TO SANTO STEFANO
Ancona is not only a town on the sea, but a town
of saints and miracles too. The people of Ancona
are devoted to their patron saint, whose remains
are kept in the Duomo di San Ciriaco. Legend
would have it that the remains of the saint arrived
by sea and were brought to safety with a rope of
plaited rushes. On 8 August every year rushes,
which have been blessed, are given out to the
faithful in memory of this event.
In the eighteenth century the Cathedral was
witness to a miraculous event, a painting
depicting the Madonna moved its eyes. The
painting is still conserved today in San Ciriaco.
Again at Ancona, in the diocesan museum of
Ancona, there is a reliquary of the XV century
containing the stone of Santo Stefano, one of
the stones that was used to stone the Christian
martyr.
74. FROM SAN GIUSEPPE TO CAMPOCAVALLO
Upon reaching the elegant town of Osimo you
will be welcomed by signs showing the Saint
levitating, San Giuseppe da Copertino who
lived in Osimo until his death, shut away in the
monastery of San Francesco.
A visit to the crypt of the Saint, where his body is
conserved, is both evocative and amazing; San
Giuseppe is the patron of students and inside the
basilica you will find an area with all the offerings,
including degree theses and mortar boards.
Osimo is also the keeper of other precious sacred
relics, the Crucifix in the Duomo di San Leopardo,
which besides having a skirt instead of the usual
loincloth, in the eighteenth century it is said have
he moved his eyes.
In the countryside surrounding Osimo
among fields of wheat and sunflowers, near
Campocavallo there is an imposing Sanctuary
dedicated to the Virgin. Here, too, the painting of
the Virgin is said to have moved its eyes.
75. DISCOVERING SACRED SITES IN THE HILLS
At Filottrano, right in the historical city centre,
you can explore the Chiesa delle Sacre Stimmate
of the XVIII century. Inside the church is a
miraculous crucifix whose Christ apparently
opened and moved his eyes.
Still in Filottrano there is the Santuario di
Tornazzano, a Gothic style church that takes its
name from a large Roman stone where San Rocco
sat to pray and as a result it would seem that it
can cure those who suffer from arthrosis and
arthritis. Inside the church there is a fresco of the
XIV century representing the Virgin with Child.
Believers used to rub the clothing of the ill on the
fresco in order to be cured. Many thanks were
lavished on it.
From Filottrano you can reach the nearby
Montefano where, at the Collegiata di San Donato
the remains of Sant’Onorio and San Saverio are
kept; under the altar a piece of the cross on
which San Donato was martyred is conserved.

HOLIDAYS FOR ALL TASTES The Riviera del Conero offers an infinite choice of holidays. Beaches equipped for families but stretches of wild beaches, too, for the more adventurous; awe inspiring destinations and cultural centres for the more curious; the sparkle of a lively night life and the calm of an afternoon in the hills.
