These days,t t m Pt ttk p am wtt t tmt p t t, p
t pkt.Ater all, what better way to express your deep-seated loveor unadulterated loathing or a particular candidate thanwith a shiny campaign button? And seeing as how 2008is an election year, it seemed like a good idea to do
something politically spirited to showcase the ront-runnerin premium coated paper, McCoy. (Not to worry thisis a totally nonpartisan promotion.)
Mccoy2008 Pays TribuTe to this time-honored American tradition ocreating political buttons which, by the way, did
get its start with our rst President. In 1789, supporters oGeorge Washington sported a brass clothing-buttonthat read, G.W. Long Live the President an intentionalplay o the phrase Long Live the King. However, metallicpolitical buttons, as we now think o them, rst came on
the scene in the Presidential election o 1896.

This had less to do with the candidates and everythingto do with the invention o thin clear sheets o celluloidthat could be used to protect the image on the button.
Beore the invention o celluloid, political items includedchina, ribbons, errotypes, tintypes, canes, hats, watches, watch obs and an endless array o other paraphernalia.By the beginning o 1916, images could alsobe directly stamped on the metal with no protectivecovering. These litho buttons were a lot cheaperto make, but ar more likely to be damaged than cellos. To this day, manuacturers continue to create bothtypes o buttons.
due To Their More ornaTe design, the period rom 1896 to 1916
is oten reerred to as The Golden Era o PoliticalButtons. That said, youd be hard-pressed to placeany classications on button design ater thatera. Unlike specic periods in art, button designis completely ree-orm. When viewed across thedecades, however, you can see a bolder use o color, typography, photography and illustration beginto emerge.

one lasT biT o Trivia: a button rom the 1896 election could beworth $20 while one rom the 1960s may be worth$1,000. In general, a political buttons value depends on
its age, design, rarity and the popularity o the candidateamong collectors.
o course, To collecTors o political memorabilia, buttons (orpinbacks as they are commonly reerred to) are still theholy grail o the hobby. We hope youll enjoy looking
at them as much as collectors do. I nothing else, youllget to see how beautiully these buttons print onMcCoy as well as be reminded o everything you orgotrom 8th grade American History.

in The 1896 elecTion, Republican William McKinley deeated
Democrat William Jennings Bryan and claimed thenal term o the century.
McKinleys victory can largely be credited to hisout-o-the-box-thinking campaign manager, Mark
Hanna, who invented many modern campaigntechniques that are used to this day. McKinley alsooverwhelmed Bryan, outspending his campaign byten to one (he had a whopping $3.5million budget, equal to roughly $82million nowadays).
Besides copious spending, part o Hannas campaignstrategy included our little hero, the button.

This pendant has a loop (intended ora chain) that you can slide to change the messageon the surace. Initially, the pendant reads, Soundmoney means a dollar worth 100 cents McKinley,

No doubt inspired by The Da Vinci Code, this
button in support o Rudy Giuliani is steepedin symbolism. Fully decoding this buttonslabyrinthine layers o meaning requires a greatdeal o detective work.
To begin, MMVIII is 2008 in Roman numerals. In reerence to Giulianis Italian heritage, the twocolumns (representing the Twin Towers) aredistinctly Tuscan style. Additionally, the symbolsthat rest atop the columns are the astrologicalsign or Gemini Twins another obvious reerenceto the Twin Towers, and a subtle hint to Giulianibeing a Gemini (he was born May 28).
182249 is a number-letter substitution cipher thatcorresponds to the alphabet. 18=R, 22=V,4=D and 9=I, which spells RVDI which appearsto make no sense, right? However, in the beginningo the Roman Republic, the Latin alphabet
didnt contain the letters U or Y. Thereore RVDIwould be the correct spelling or RUDY (Giulianiis a Roman Catholic as well).
The Roman numeral III on the ribbon stands orGiulianis ull name: Rudolph William Louis

Giuliani s ull name: Rudolph William LouisGiuliani III. The unnished pyramid and the eyeare ound on the $1 bill, giving the design a pro-nounced American eel.
In 2002 Elizabeth II bestowed honorary Knighthoodupon Guliani, thus the knight chess piece as thepyramids cap.
Finally, the donkey and elephant jointly adorn thetop o the design because Giuliani started hispolitical career as a Democrat and later becamea Republican. OK, you can breathe now.
