Abstract
During transition, Serbia and other (semi) peripheral countries havebecome economical, political and cultural colonies of transnationalcapitalistclass(TNCC)whosecenter(metropolis)isfoundinthemainsocietiesoftheworldcapitalistsystemtheUSandtheEU.ThishasinfluencedtheformationoftheSerbiansystemofmassculturethatischaracterizedbythecultureofforgetting,theideologyofconsumeristliberationofsinandshame,fetishismofsexandviolence,aswellasnormalization(relaxation)ofpathologyandamorality.ThesefeaturesdominatealsointhehighcultureproducedandconsumedbyTNCCmembers(andcandidatesforit).MostofthehighcultureisnowunderTNCCcontrol,whichessentiallydictatesthedominanttastes.Membersofthebourgeoisie,whosuccessfullyproduceordemonstratetherighttaste on the (semi) periphery, are incorporated into the idiocraticfractionofTNCC.HencealmostallhighcultureinSerbiaismarkedwithcompradorcontentandstyle,andalsomarkedbyconceptualart.And since it is impossible, in the current sociohistorical conditions,to reject themaincultural functionof themassmedia inSerbiaasacollectorofconsumerhypnosis,itisalsoimpossible,inthecurrentsociohistorical constellation, to change the colonial compradorcharacter of the institutions of high culture inSerbia.They are onlyan institutional expression of the dominant, financially and sociallyhegemonicclassesinSerbiansocietythecompradorbourgeoisie.
