The auxiliary heater protects the engine and reduces its wear. Thanks to the auxiliary heater which preheats the engine, the pollutant emission is substantially re-
duced. On petrol engines, the production of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide decreases
roughly by half.

Introduction
Auxiliary heater
The auxiliary heating system allows us to set theoptimal climate conditions in the vehicle interior
using the heating or ventilation mode so that thevehicle interior is already heated, if necessaryventilated, before entering the vehicle.
By using the auxiliary heating system, we preventthe frosting and fogging of the glass panes whichwould otherwise obstruct the driver's view.
Wearing heavy winter clothing in the vehicle re-duces the effectiveness of the seat belt - the playbetween the belt and the person's body increasesbecause the seat belt does no longer fit tightlyacross the body.Wearing appropriate clothing in the pre-heatedvehicle interior increases the protective effectof the seat belt and the responsiveness of thedriver.

The auxiliary heater (further referred to as AH) ispart of a heating system which heats the inside ofthe vehicle, possibly the engine, regardless if theengine is running or not.
Auxiliary heaters are divided into two basic types:
Auxi liary hot air heater
The auxiliary hot air heater is used and installedprimarily in cabins of lorries and machines, suchas excavators, cranes, bulldozers or larger vans, ships' cabins etc.
An advantage is the rapid heating of the individ-ual area, the low consumption, a low noise leveland the possibility of countless hours of operation(depending on the capacity of the battery). A dis-advantage is the inability to preheat the unit itself.
AUXILIARY HOT AIR HEATER
The core of any such auxiliary heater is the com-bustion chamber, into which the combustion air isdirected by means of the fan and where it mixeswith the petrol and diesel fuel supplied from thefuel tank of the vehicle. The air-fuel mixture isignited by a glow plug. The resulting combustiongases are diverted by means of the exhaust sys-tem of the AH.
Auxi liary hot water heater
The hot water heater is used mainly in passengervehicles. Compared with hot-air systems, it offersthe possibility of preheating the engine itself andthe use of the ventilation distribution system.
It has compact dimensions and is placed directlyin the engine compartment.Amongst the main advantages is the aforemen-tioned possibility to heat the unit to the desiredtemperature before the actual start-up. In con-nection herewith, the consumption as well asthe emissions and not least the engine wear arereduced due to the already warmed-up engine.

Introduction
The auxiliary heater is a heating system thatburns fuel. During this process, energy is re-leased in the form of heat, which subsequentlyheats the liquid in the cooling circuit of the vehicle.
The combustion process is determined by threebasic factors:
1. Actual fuel – raw material which is convertedinto heat energy.
The fuel from the fuel tank of the vehicle isinjected into the combustion chamber of theauxiliary heater by means of the dosing pump
of the AH.
2. Actual oxygen – enables the combustion dur-ing which the fuel is converted into energy.
The air supply is ensured by means of a fanwhich is a component of the body of the auxil-iary heater.
3. Required temperature – prerequisite to en-sure the flash point.
After activating the auxiliary heater, the electriccurrent is conducted to the glow plug, whichoperates on the principle of electrical resist-ance and is heated by applying voltage.

Venturi nozzle
The fuel from the fuel tank of the vehicle (petrol ordiesel) is transferred to the heating unit by means
of a special pump. This is where the fuel and airmixes as it enters the combustion chamber viathe venturi nozzle. The air is fed into the systemby a fan, which is located in front of the nozzle, whereas the mouth of the fan is equipped witha silencer. The glow plug which extends into thecombustion chamber is intended for the ignition ofthe mixture. The heat released during the com-bustion heats the exchanger, which in turn heatsthe water which flows through it. The exchangeris connected to the cooling circuit of the vehicle.
The circulation of the liquid in the water circuit isensured by the pump of the auxiliary heater. The
combustion gases emitted during thefi
ring proc-ess are diverted through the exhaust gas pipewhich is fitted with a silencer. The control unit of the Thermo Top V systemis a direct component of the heating unit. Thetemperature at the exchanger is monitored by twosensors - the temperature sensor and the over-heat sensor.

Activat ion of the auxil iary heater
After activating the auxiliary heater, it is preparedfor operation.
The glow plug including the flame arrester Q8,the combustion air fan V6 and the circulationpump V55 are put into operation.
The dosing pump V54 starts after 30 secondsand the combustion air fan V6 operation issuspended for 3 seconds. Subsequently, thecombustion air fan V6 speed is increased in tworamps and increases again within 56 seconds tofull load.
After the stabilisation phase (constant speed) of15 seconds, the combustion air fan V6 speed isagain increased in a ramp within one cycle (50seconds) to around the full load.
After reaching full load during the fuel transfer, the glow plug including the flame arrester isdeactivated Q8 and the combustion air fan V6 speed stabilises itself at full load. During the next45 seconds, the glow plug including the flamearrester Q8, monitor the flame condition. Then
begins the automatically controlled heating op-eration.
In case of a no-flame condition or a flameoutbased on a malfunction, the fuel supply isstopped and the auxiliary heater is deactivated, whereby the combustion air fan V6 runs down toa standstill.
In case of a flameout during a normal combustionoperation and if the system does not detect any
malfunction, the flame automatically re-ignites.
Conditions for the activation:
• A properly charged vehicle battery (a minimumvoltage of 11.5 V is required for the faultless op-
eration of the electrical components of the AH.)• Suf ficient fuel (if too little fuel is present in the
fuel tank - the fuel gauge is in the red field, theauxiliary heater control unit J364 does not acti-vate the auxiliary heater.)
Control of the auxiliary heater
The auxiliary heater is designed to increase thetemperature of the coolant.
When the coolant temperature reaches 72°C,the auxiliary heater control unit J364 enables theauxiliary heater to switch to the energy savingpart load operation.
When the coolant temperature rises to 76.5°C,the auxiliary heater control unit J364 enables theauxiliary heater to enter a control idle period.
If the coolant temperature drops during the con-trol idle period to below 71°C within 900 seconds(15 mins), this causes the heating unit to performa full load operation.
Deactivation of the auxiliary heater
After switching off the auxiliary heater manu-ally or after a running time of 60 minutes as wellas after the coolant temperature has reached
85 °C, the combustion stops and the run-downcommences. The circulation pump V55 and thecombustion air fan V6 first continue operation tocool the auxiliary heater down (run-down) to beautomatically switched off afterwards.

Safety condit ions for the use of theauxiliary heater
• The auxiliary heater must not be used withina closed area! The AH produces combustiongases which could cause poisoning. Therefore,
the vehicle must not be within a closed area, such as in the garage, when activating the AH.
• When filling up with fuel, the auxiliary heatermust always be switched off, otherwise there isa risk of fire!
• When using the AH, you should not stand ona surface that could ignite easily from the hotexhaust gases of the auxiliary heater, for exam-ple, dry grass.
Preheating of the fuel
On diesel engines, the AH Thermo Top V versionis equipped with a heating element for preheat-
ing. The fuel is directly preheated by the heatingelement prior to injection into the combustionchamber, thus reducing the formation of smokewhen starting the heater. The heating elementis activated for approximately one minute afterstarting the AH.
