Activities related to safeguard, conservation/ restoration andmanagement of our built heritage involve a number ofstakeholders intervening at different levels of the process.These activities require the ability to develop a global visiontooutline overall conservation projects with clear objectives thatensure the safeguard and management of heritage assets, andthe command of operative specialties, from preliminaryinvestigations on architectural heritage, up to the control of thequality and effectiveness of achieved results.The current curriculum of the studies to become architectappears inadequate to educate professionals able to pick upthe challenge of the sustainable conservation of ourarchitectural heritage and landscape.The School of Specialisation in Restoration of Monuments hasbeen established in 1994 to fill this gap and is one of the fouroperating in Italy, together with those of Naples, Rome andMilan.The School has two institutional tasks:1) to confer a specific professional background in the study,safeguard, conservation/ restoration, management and 'miseen valeur' of architectural heritage and landscape thatintegrates the university education;2) to provide a sound knowledge of the methods andtechniques for the safeguard and the conservation of thisasset.

Along the years the School has activated collaborations andcontacts with:

Links for cultural exchanges, students and staff mobility are incourse of activation with a number of European educationalcentres and schools.

The School has also established collaborations linkswithmagazines and journals specialised in the sectors ofconservation and building rehabilitation which, along the years,have published several articles by the School teachers andstudents.

The candidates, to obtain the Diploma from the School, shouldacquire the notions and the background to be able:- to dominate and to correctly utilise: 1) the theoretical andscientific references of the disciplinary debate on the safeguard,conservation/restoration and management of architecturalheritage and landscape; 2) the fundamentals and principles thatgovern the various technical and disciplinary sectors involved;- to know in depth the issues related to architectural heritageprotection and the legal and normative texts on these subjects;- to know, to apply and to control direct and indirect analyticalmethods for architecture and landscape;- to use and to coordinate the techniques for treatment, thedesign phases, the overall management of the operationalscheme and the quantitative and economical evaluation, themanagement and the final testing of the works;- to promote and to manage competencies and experienceexchanges among the various field of conservation, from thescale of movable objects to the one of urban sites and of thelandscape.

The School accepts candidates graduated in Architecture, CivilEngineering, and Conservation of Cultural Property (according tothe old articulation of the university courses) and of the newspecialised courses of the class 4/S “Architecture and CivilEngineering”. Besides, the School may accept graduates from thefollowing classes: 2/S “Archeology”, 10/S “Conservation ofarchitectural property and landscape”; 12/S “Conservation andrestoration of historic and artistic heritage”; 95/S “History of Art”,prior evaluation of the individual curricula by the School to identifyeducational debts.

Graduates from foreign universities may be admitted to thecompetition if their title is equivalent to those required tograduates in Italy, according to the T.U. 31/08/1933, n. 1592,art. 337. The School reserves 25% places to foreign candidates.
