The Success Circle Handbook 4
Introduction No one can possibly achieve any real and lasting success or ʺget richʺ in business by being a conformist.
‐‐ J. Paul Getty
This chapter will:
Define what a Success Circle is
Outline the benefits of participating
Describe what you can expect
Welcome to the Circle!
Think of your Success Circle as an advisory board, coaching club and mastermind group, all rolled into one. You’ll be working with a small group of women like yourself – independent professionals committed to having a thriving business, who love the freedom of working solo and crave the connection and synergy of working with others.
Why Join a Success Circle?
The magic of a Success Circle is that individual members can work smarter, move ahead faster and accomplish more than if they were working alone.
What makes a Success Circle different from a mastermind group or a teleclass is 1) the coaching and 2) the emphasis on action and accountability.
When you participate in a Success Circle:
The Success Circle Handbook 5
You tap into the power of group synergy and break free of the limits of working – and thinking – solo.
You gain focus, inspiration and confidence
You accomplish your goals more quickly and efficiently
You increase your productivity, profitability and quality of life
What to Expect
You may or may not know the other women in the group when we start, but I promise the relationships that develop from a Success Circle are rich and deep. Some women become friends for life – you may even discover a business partner or joint venture partner!
A Success Circle is a sacred space where women explore their dreams and fears about being in business for themselves. But it’s also a strategic think tank and a catalyst for purposeful action – something that many solo‐professionals struggle with.
You can expect to be supported, championed and challenged by your group. At times, we’ll encourage you to venture beyond your comfort zone; other times, we’ll embrace you gently and celebrate the baby steps you’re taking.
Always, your right to choose your own path and pace will be honored.
Expect to be called upon by the other members of your group for the same in return. You’ll be asked to share your story and to speak your truth. Laughter, reflection, tears and questions are all welcome inside the Circle. So is the phrase, “I don’t know”!
Don’t be surprised if the Success Circle spills over into the rest of your life, and vice verse. Again and again, I notice how women are expected to segregate and compartmentalize the many different roles that make up our lives. In the Success Circle, you don’t need to leave anything out; who you are as a whole woman is welcome.
The Success Circle Handbook 6
Lastly, not everyone will start or finish in the same place, and that’s okay – start where ever you are, take it as far as you want to take it, and enjoy the journey.
Success Tip: Make it a Private Party
Do you have 3‐4 friends you’d love to have in your Success Circle? I’d be delighted to facilitate a private Success Circle just for your group.
If you form your own Success Circle, I’ll give the whole group a discount, too! Contact me to find out more.

Getting Ready
Look at what your idea of success would be. The more that you take in external motivators, the more it reduces your ultimate satisfaction because it doesnʹt come from inside.
‐‐ Chris Messina, Cashing In or Selling Out
This chapter will:
Offer guidelines and suggestions for getting the most out of the experience
Introduce the practice of Remembrance as a way to feed your heart
Start Here
Take stock of where you are now and where you want to end up. How far, how deep and how fast do you want to go in the next 90 days?
Be sure to download and complete the Getting Started worksheet from the Success Circle Online Learning Center before the first group session. In the meantime, here are some suggestions for getting the most out of your Success Circle:
Make the Time
Block time in your calendar now for the meetings, the coaching and the work that you’ll need to do in order to meet your goals during the program. As a rule of thumb, allow an extra 15 to 30 minutes after each group or coaching session so you have time to review your notes, formulate an action plan and stay organized. Don’t rush from one thing to the next.
Also allow at least 2 to 4 hours extra time per week for working on your business. This is in
The Success Circle Handbook 8
addition to whatever time you already spend marketing your business and working with clients. Yes, you’re going to be quite busy for the next six months! But I promise it will be well worth the time and effort.
Make the Space
Dedicate some physical space to this process so it has a home. By that, I mean a quiet workspace where you can access the phone and computer and read and write without being distracted.
You may also find it helpful to create a binder or file specifically for this program to help you stay organized.
Ask for What You Want
If something’s not working for you or you have a question, please ask! If I don’t know the answer, I’ll do my best to help you find what you need.
Show Up
This program requires participation from every member. That means not just quietly listening in on the group sessions, but actively engaging in the process and working diligently between sessions. I encourage you to speak up, ask questions, challenge assumptions, trust your gut, share your insights and acknowledge your fears. We want to hear what you have to say!
Buddy Up
If you really want to turn up the heat, find a buddy to work with outside of the group! Ask a friend, a colleague, or better yet – one of the other group members to support you. You can check in with each other via email or in a weekly phone call or you could even meet in person as a study group with any group members who live in your area.
Follow Up
This one is simple, but it’s probably one of the most critical guidelines: Do what you said
The Success Circle Handbook 9
you’d do! Each week, you’ll have the opportunity to plan your strategy for the next week’s actions and make a commitment to your group to take specific steps. When you commit to something, do whatever it takes to get it done! Even if you fail in spite of your best effort, you’ll gain far more than if you’d never made the commitment at all.
I assure you that while you’ll be held accountable for your commitments, you won’t be judged for your choices.
Feed Your Heart
As a woman who’s in the business of being of service, you’re giving from the heart both in your personal relationships and through your work with clients. You need to take care of your body, mind and spirit if you want to contribute to others. It makes sense to give from a place of fullness, doesn’t it?
Hopefully, you’re already taking good care of yourself, but I want to encourage you to pay
particular attention to the care and feeding of your heart.
Most of the women I work with consider themselves to be spiritually active, yet many struggle with maintaining a regular spiritual practice. They know the value of spending time each day in reflection, prayer or meditation, but they don’t always do it.
Taking time to connect with your heart helps you center and ground yourself spiritually. It’s very important to bring your heart into your business, not just your head.
Towards that end, we’ll spend a few moments at the start of each group session in a very simple spiritual practice called the Remembrance.
This is a very old practice that is not particular to any one spiritual tradition. I first learned of it through a Sufi workshop that I attended five years ago, but it’s actually a practice that shows up in one form or another in many different spiritual traditions.
The Success Circle Handbook 10
In Remembrance, you call the Name of the Divine into your heart, using whatever name is most familiar to you. Calling the Name into your heart brings your attention and awareness to God. It’s as simple as that.
Remembrance is not so much a technique as a way of relating to the Divine. It doesn’t automatically change anything about you or the circumstances of your life; Remembrance simply brings you into relationship with God in the present moment. Remembrance is about ‘being here, now, with God’ – awake, aware and receptive.
The purpose of Remembrance is to place you squarely, consciously and fully where you are, even when where you are feels confusing, crappy or whatever else it may feel like at the moment. There is a solid foundation underneath all the thoughts, emotions and circumstances of your life, and that foundation is the Source. Remembrance helps you stand on firm ground ‐‐ the ground of your Being ‐‐ so that you can take a sure step.
The Remembrance takes place in your heart, rather than your head. Fixing, understanding, rationalizing – all that happens in your head. Taking in the Unknown is the heart’s business.
And taking in the Unknown leaves you with – yep, you guessed it ‐‐ a full heart.
As I mentioned, we’ll do Remembrance together at the start of each group session. I encourage you to practice Remembrance or whatever form of spiritual practice works best for you on a daily basis, as well.
Success Tip: More Resources
If you’d like more information about Remembrance, I highly recommend Mark Silver’s Remembrance ChallengeTM , a free 14‐day self‐study course for practicing Remembrance. You can sign up for the course here: http://www.heartofbusiness.com/thechallenge/index.htm

Logistics
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.
‐‐ Herman Cain
This chapter will:
Explain how a Success Circle works
Outline the basic logistics of the program
Introduce the group blog and explain how to use it
How it Works
The Success Circle program has four major components:
1) A 45‐minute one‐on‐one strategy session to help you get clear about what you want to accomplish in the Success Circle and outline your action plan. I’ll contact you via email to schedule your one‐on‐one consultation. The session is recorded so you can listen to it again afterwards.
2) 12 group coaching sessions which take place over the telephone on a private bridge line; there are a total of twelve 90‐minute sessions over a 6‐month period. These sessions are also recorded and available for download at the Online Learning Center.
3) The weekly Coaching Gym, which is open one day a week for 20‐minute private laser coaching sessions via telephone. (The
The Success Circle Handbook 12
Coaching Gym is explained in the next chapter.)
4) The Success Circle Online Learning Center, where you’ll find links, resources, tools, tips and updates for your Success Circle.
All dates, times and bridge line information for the Success Circle are emailed to each group member upon registration, along with the URL for the Success Circle Online Learning Center.
Calling in on the Bridge Line
For our group sessions, please call on a land line if possible (not a cell phone), from a quiet, private place, about 1‐2 minutes before our scheduled group session time. This will help ensure that we start on time.
Dial the bridge line number and follow the recorded instructions. When prompted, enter the access code, followed by the # sign. (The bridge line number and access code are emailed to all group members upon registration.)
I make a point of calling a few minutes early so that Iʹm there to greet everyone as they come in. However, if you happen to be the first to arrive, youʹll hear music until the second person joins the line.
This rarely happens, but if you happen to get a recorded message saying all long distance circuits are busy, or if no one else has connected after a few minutes, hang up, double check the number and dial in again.
If you still can’t connect with the bridge line, send me an email immediately and I’ll do what I can to help you join the call.

meditation, getting centered and connecting with our hearts.
2) Progress report from last session: Each person takes 1‐2 minutes to check in and share wins since last session.
3) Discussion Topic: Each session, we’ll focus on one of the 10 keys for getting the best of yourself in business. (20‐30 minutes)
4) Group coaching: I’ll ask if anyone has a ‘hot’ issue for coaching, brainstorming or feedback. We can usually work with 2‐3 requests each call.
5) Housekeeping and wrap‐up: The last 10 minutes or so is for announcements, reminders and a brief check‐in with each person regarding specific commitments for the coming weeks.
My intention is to start and finish the call exactly on time every week, but I can usually stay on the call for an additional 15 minutes or so in case someone needs extra time.
The Success Circle Handbook 14
Discussion List
You’ll use a Yahoo! Group discussion list to stay in touch with your group. Instructions for joining the list are posted at the Online Learning Center.
Progress Reports
I encourage group members to send a progress report to the Group Discussion List the day before each group session. For example, if your group meets on Wednesday, you would post your update on Tuesday.
I also highly recommend that you read everyone’s updates before each group meeting.
Here’s a suggested format for your progress report:
Status of my commitments since last group session.
Wins & successes
Insights & ideas
Where I feel stuck or want some help
Next obvious actions
The Online Learning Center
The Online Learning Center is accessible only to the members of your particular Success Circle.
It’s ‘ground zero’ for the group‐‐a virtual bulletin board where you’ll find information, resources and tools; you can also comment on specific posts or even post something yourself if you wish.
When you register for the program you’ll receive an email with information about your program, including the link for the Online Learning Center.
As soon as you get the link to the Online Learning Center:
1) VISIT & BOOKMARK THE SITE: Be sure to visit the Online Learning Center and save the location in your browser:
The Success Circle Handbook 15
Internet Explorer users: with your browser pointed to the site, click Favorites on the browser menu and select Add to Favorites on the drop‐down menu.
FireFox and Netscape users: click Bookmarks and select Add This Page from the drop‐down menu.
2) SUBSCRIBE TO THE EMAIL FEED: To get email notification when something new is posted on the Online Learning Center, type your email address in the FeedBlitz form on the Getting Started page, and click ‘Keep me posted’.
You’ll be asked to reenter your information and to correctly type some security text into a box.
FeedBlitz will then send you an email with a confirmation link; you must CLICK the link in the email to complete your subscription.
Once you’re subscribed, you’ll receive a daily email summary of any activity at the
Online Learning Center – new resources, posts and comments. This makes it easy to stay current with your group without having to wade through a flood of individual emails in your inbox.
3) DOWNLOAD YOUR BONUS MATERIALS: Instructions for downloading your materials and preparing for our first group call can be found on the Getting Started page at the Online Learning Center.
If you have any trouble subscribing through FeedBlitz or downloading your materials, please let me know right away. I’ll be happy to work with you one‐on‐one.

Participation Seventy percent of success in life is showing up.
‐‐ Woody Allen
This chapter will:
Explain who’s responsible for what
Outline the basic guidelines for participation
Introduce the concepts of brainstorming and giving and receiving feedback
Offer ideas for how you might use the synergy of the group
What You Can Count on Me For
As your coach, my job is to facilitate you in the process of accomplishing your goals more easily. I’m also responsible for organizing and leading the group calls, and for being available outside of the group for mentoring, coaching and support. Please feel free to call me during my office hours (M‐F, 9am – 5pm Pacific) or email me ([email protected]) with questions and requests.
As your coach, you can count on me to support, celebrate and challenge you. I will also offer suggestions and point out resources to help you achieve your objectives in the program. You can be assured that I will hold in confidence any information you share with me about your business.
The Success Circle Handbook 17
You can rely on me to be honest and truthful with you at all times. If I see that you’re struggling or I have a concern about your participation, I will speak with you about it privately.
Your Job
As a participant in the Success Circle, your job is to:
Show up and actively engage in the group process
Stay focused on your goals
Be true to your authentic self
Speak up when you have something to say
Be willing to contribute and to be supported by others
Help create a safe, synergistic, win‐win environment
How to Be in the Group
To create the optimal group environment, I ask each group member to respect and adhere to the following guidelines:
Maintain strict confidentiality (see below for specifics)
Be professional and respectful in your interactions
Speak your truth with kindness
Keep an open mind
Share information, feedback and resources in a spirit of cooperation and mutuality
Take responsibility for your assumptions, judgments and biases
Respect each person’s right to have her own perspective, follow her own path and go at her own pace
The Success Circle Handbook 18
Confidentiality
What happens in the Circle stays in the Circle. Do not share the content of our group discussions with anyone outside of the group; do not disclose the details of another member’s product development, business strategy or marketing research; do not pass along files or proprietary materials posted by another group member without permission.
Also, please do not give out the URL for our Online Learning Center to anyone outside the group.
If you have any questions about what should or should not be kept confidential, please let me know.
Brainstorming 101
Brainstorming is one of the most valuable (and fun!) aspects of doing a Success Circle. Anyone can ask for brainstorming from the group. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of the experience:
The most important thing in brainstorming is defining the issue. You don’t want it to be too broad (“How do I create a profitable business?”), nor do you want it to be too narrow (“Which shopping cart system should I use?”). If your issue seems too narrow, try opening it up – for example, you might ask the group to help you think of all the different criteria or questions you need to ask when choosing a shopping cart system.
Go for quantity over quality during brainstorming. Get as many ideas onto paper as possible and then go back and evaluate them later.
Studies show that it helps to give the mind a short rest during brainstorming sessions, so we may brainstorm for a few minutes, then change the focus for a few minutes (maybe do some Remembrance) and then do another burst of brainstorming.
No criticizing, explaining, defending or evaluating of ideas during the brainstorm.
The Success Circle Handbook 19
Wild ideas are welcome – in fact, I encourage you not to be reasonable during brainstorming. Unreasonable creativity is a very good thing!
Build on each other’s ideas.
I may interrupt the brainstorm if it seems like we’re spending too long on one idea or train of thought.
I’ll usually ask for a volunteer to take notes for the group while we’re brainstorming.
Giving and Receiving Feedback
It’s often difficult to maintain objective detachment when you spend most of your time working alone. One of the best advantages of a Success Circle is that you can get feedback on ideas, strategies and materials before you go ‘public’ with them.
Here are some helpful hints for giving feedback:
Don’t give feedback without permission. If someone isn’t ready to hear what you have to say, they won’t be able to take it in.
People sometimes confuse feedback with criticism. Instead of critiquing or finding fault, try to focus on what works, what doesn’t work and what you would want more of if you were this person’s customer. Describe rather than evaluate.
Offer alternatives and suggestions, rather than giving advice or telling the person what to do.
Be honest, but also be kind in your tone and words.
Let go of being right. Offer your feedback without attachment; what they do with it is their business, not yours.
The Success Circle Handbook 20
Hints for receiving feedback:
Invite people to give you feedback, and then listen to what they say. Ask clarifying questions if necessary.
Be specific about what you want feedback on. Rather than saying, “Let me know what you think” you might ask, “What three thoughts or questions were you left with after reading this?”
To accept feedback, you need to be open and flexible. Try not to shut down, get defensive or take a rigid position.
The first step is to take it in; secondly, evaluate it; thirdly, decide what to do with it. You don’t have to do all of that in the moment, though. You can simply receive the feedback and say, “Thank you” for now.
Watch for patterns. Ask yourself, “Is this something I’ve heard from others?”
If it’s useful, make use of it; if it’s not useful or constructive, let it go. If you’re not sure, you might bring it into a coaching session so we can explore it together.
If you start to feel overwhelmed or confused by conflicting views, it’s okay to say, “That’s enough, thanks.”
Ideas for How to Use the Group
The members of your Success Circle are an amazing resource. Each person brings a unique perspective, decades of life and work experience, and years of education and training in many different fields. Perhaps most importantly, each carries a special gift in her heart, something that is hers and hers alone to give.
You have a fantastic opportunity to tap into all of that. Here are just a few of the ways that group members can support each other. When you’re not sure what you need from the group, pick something off this list:
Ask the group to brainstorm with you
The Success Circle Handbook 21
Invite people to give you their feedback
Ask for resources, referrals and recommendations that will help you move forward
Ask the group to help you see what’s getting in your way
Consult with a group member who may have particular expertise
Get some laser coaching during the group session
Get help planning your strategy or identifying your next steps
Make a bold commitment and encourage the group to hold you accountable for following through
Ask another group member to share their notes and bring you up to speed if you miss a session
Ask for help in finding the blessings inside of a challenging situation
Encourage the group to challenge you to take a risk
Test an idea, a product or a survey on the group
Share a win and ask the group to help you celebrate it
Invite other people in the group to form a joint venture with you
Edit each other’s marketing materials

Coaching To be healthy, wealthy, happy and successful in any and all areas of your life you need to be aware that you need to think healthy, wealthy, happy and successful thoughts twenty four hours a day and cancel all negative, destructive, fearful and unhappy thoughts. These two types of thought cannot coexist if you want to share in the abundance that surrounds us all.
‐‐ Sidney Madwed
This chapter will:
Explain how the Coaching Gym works
Describe how to work with a coach
Help you get the most out of the coaching
The Coaching Gym
The basic Success Circle package includes a six‐month pass to the Coaching Gym for one‐on‐one laser coaching. Participation in the Coaching Gym is optional; you can use it as often as you like, and you don’t need to make an appointment ahead of time.
The Coaching Gym is open one day a week (usually Fridays) between 9am and noon, Pacific Time. Call my office number (425‐821‐9150) on the hour or the half‐hour for a 20‐minute laser coaching session – no appointment necessary.
If you get my voice mail during open Gym hours, it means that someone called ahead of you; wait 30 minutes and try again.
The Coaching Gym is offered on a first‐come, first‐served basis; if you would prefer to have a guaranteed coaching time each week, you have the option of upgrading to the platinum Success Circle package, which includes six 45‐minute pre‐scheduled coaching sessions. Coaching appointments are scheduled Monday –
The Success Circle Handbook 23
Wednesday, between 8:00am and 8:00pm, Pacific Time. For more information and to upgrade your Success Circle package, please contact me.
How a Typical Coaching Session Goes
Here’s what to expect in your coaching session:
I’ll ask you what you want to accomplish in the session.
We’ll define the goal or issue that you’re working on, explore options and challenges, and develop a workable plan. If you’ve sent me material to review ahead of time, we’ll go over that together and I’ll give you my feedback and suggestions.
In the last 5 minutes of the session, we’ll identify your next obvious action steps.
Help Your Coach to Help You
Take some time prior to each coaching session to organize your thoughts and decide what your most pressing issues are. Then, choose one thing to focus on during the coaching.
Coaching is a dynamic, intimate process. I’ll help you get clear, think strategically and dig deep for your own answers. If you’re feeling stuck, we’ll work on loosening things up – or we may explore simply being stuck to see where that leads you.
If you’d like me to give you feedback on a webpage or some marketing copy, please send it to me via email a couple of hours ahead of time so I have a chance to review it before the call.
The best way you can help me be a good coach for you is to be honest and not hold anything back. Don’t be shy about letting me know what’s working or not working for you about the coaching. I’ll do my best to adapt to your preferences if I know what they are.
The Success Circle Handbook 24
One last thing – I want to make sure you understand that coaching is not a substitute for therapy. As a business coach and marketing strategist, I’m qualified to facilitate strategic planning and provide marketing consultation and resources, and as a spiritual coach, I’m experienced with the dynamics of spiritual growth. However, I’m not qualified to assess mental health issues, prescribe therapeutic treatment or offer psychological counseling.
If you aren’t able to focus your attention and energy on your business or take meaningful action towards your goals because health or emotional issues are holding you back, then coaching may not be appropriate for you right now. If you have any concerns about whether coaching or the Success Circle program is right for you, I’d be happy to help you find appropriate resources.
Before a Coaching Session
Questions to help you get ready for a coaching session (pick one or two):
What do I want to accomplish in this session?
What’s on my mind that needs to be said?
What are my “wins” this week?
Where am I stuck?
Am I open to new ideas?
Am I willing to do the work?
Am I ready to make a decision and/or follow through?
What am I curious about?
What is getting in the way?
What do I need/want from my coach today?
The Success Circle Handbook 25
Beyond the Circle Set priorities for your goals. A major part of successful living lies in the ability to put first things first. Indeed, the reason most major goals are not achieved is that we spend our time doing second things first.
‐‐ Robert J. McKain
This chapter will:
Take you through a short completion exercise
Help you decide what’s next
Provide options for staying in action with your marketing
Reviewing the Journey
At the end of the program, I’ll ask you to share your answers to these questions with the rest of your Success Circle:
1. What results have I achieved in this program?
2. What, if anything, is yet to be done?
3. What steps or actions do I need to take in order to feel complete with my goals?
4. What new thoughts, skills or habits have I developed?
5. What am I grateful to have received from the others in my Success Circle?
6. What else do I want to say to be complete at this time?
Where Do You Go From Here?
Before you know it, our time together will have flown by; your Success Circle is complete,
The Success Circle Handbook 26
you’re ready for some fresh new goals, and you have an extra 90‐minutes of free time twice a month!
OK ‐‐ now what?
Here are ten ideas for what you can do next to you grow your business:
1. Review and refine your overall strategic marketing plan. Set some new goals for yourself, now that this latest piece is in place (i.e., whatever you accomplished in your Success Circle).
2. Strengthen your brand by developing and packaging your own signature coaching program.
3. Go deeper into your niche. Survey your customers to find out what they’re most concerned about and what they’re most interested in buying.
4. Expand into a new niche. If you’re well‐established, you may be able to refocus
and/or repackage what you’re doing for a new target market with similar needs.
5. Create a joint venture with another solo‐preneur or a small business that serves the same market or one that’s similar to yours.
6. Add to your product funnel—design a new teleclass or write an e‐book.
7. Join a membership site or a coaching club that specializes in marketing strategies or business development for solo‐preneurs.
8. Hone your copy writing skills and start creating sales letters and marketing pieces for your products.
9. Develop a referral program that rewards your customers for sending you new business.
10. Improve your visibility by networking, writing and speaking in public more often.
