December 2015 • MEM* policy decision for microbead phase out in personal care, cosmetic and cleaning
products: 2 year phase out & no later than 1 July 2018
November 2016• MEM policy announcement for voluntary, industry-led phase out • Effectiveness of voluntary action to be assessed in mid-2017, regulation as alternative

February 2017 • Phase out agreement finalised • Accord launched BeadRecede & industry outreach commenced
June 2017 • Accord submitted initial baseline progress report to MEM • MEM satisfied with progress so far: “Ministers welcomed industry progress to deliver a
voluntary phase out of microbeads by mid-2018”
Accord’s role going forward.. • Submit progress reports to the MEM every 6 months (until 1 July 2018) • Commence broader industry outreach to companies using solid plastic microbeads
beyond their conventional usage e.g. industrial heavy-duty hand soaps (from October 2017)
• Continue push for policy attention on other sources of marine microplastic pollution

Accord’s initial baseline report demonstrated: • >50% of relevant companies have already completed their phase out of plastic
microbeads • 93% of all relevant companies are on board with meeting the phase out, having either
removed solid plastic microbeads or committing to do so by 1 July 2018 • 66% reduction in the number of products containing plastic microbeads over this period
