W elcome to the September/October edition of
The Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory.
We’ve undergone a radical overhaul recently here at Direc-tory Towers. A top consultation firm (a smashing bunch of people, all called Jacintha by coincidence) has been looking at how we operate with a view to major re-branding on a top-to-bottom basis. Their recommendations are just in, and, because we spent several zillion pounds on their services, I feel it only right to share their ideas with our loyal public.
At the heart of it, a need was seen for Continuity on a Real-Time basis. Identity was obviously key in this. Our Core Values were reassessed on a Cross-Platform Model and great value was placed on Inter-personal Interpretation (on an ad hoc basis – obvi-ously) (with ongoing amendments when needed – of course).
The really clever part is that you’d never even know that the consultants had been here at all. They were that good. We hope that you enjoy this edition in its brand new, revolu-tionary, unchanged format.

The Chingford Directory
T here is a county whose coastline is longer than that of Cornwall or any
other county for that matter. There are cliff walks and rugged coves, marshes and mudflats, tales of pirates and Saxons, tall ships, lightships, big ships and little ships, islands estuaries and creeks, pastel beach huts lined up like gum drops by sandy shores, piers, fossils, and traces of every stage of our history. Where, then, is this glorious county? In case you hadn’t guessed, it’s Essex.
Over the next few months (or, to be realistic, years) we can walk together through this scenery. And where should we start? Where, after all, does Essex start?
Well, just about everything (except for Friends repeats on E4) starts and ends somewhere, and Essex starts at Harwich. You could also argue that it ends there, if you happened to be proceeding in an easterly direction from London. And, we should add, if you were walking around Essex in a clockwise sort of a manner, then Harwich might be just about any-where. But it isn’t. It’s there on the map, where Essex starts (or ends). Across the river, Suffolk ends (or starts).
Not famous as a holiday location. Not Cancun. Not really even Marbs. Let’s face it, it’s not even Bognor. But therein lies its charm. I feel awfully out of place on the beaches of Cancun, all sort of pink
and plumpish, and they laugh at me in Marbs for all the wrong reasons. But in Harwich I blend. Just another plumpish pink bloke. Not a tourist gawping. All of which releases me to gawp as a tourist as much as I like. And, believe it or not, there is plenty to gawp at. So come with me on this wild voyage of discovery. To Harwich. Where Essex ends forever. Or starts.
The coast from Harwich heads south and west-wards towards London, with several towns along the way, as though the county were rehearsing its art of seaside resorts before hitting the nail on the head with Southend-on-sea.
Many of the places have a suffix, which all tend to be references to water of some sort or another. Frinton-on-sea and so on. As though the weary traveller arrives and says “Ah – I was kind of won-dering what those wet waves were.”
Harwich, once a major harbour, sits on a crooked finger of coastline, looking across at the massive container ships unloading at Felixstowe rather like an aged grandfather watching his descendants working hard in a field. Great ships, laden with who-knows-what, plough in from the sea, blocking the horizon before mooring alongside lines of cranes that pick their carcasses of their goods.
The town has trails that highlight its maritime history, and although Harwich now has a somewhat unglamorous reputation, it’s easy to carry oneself

back to earlier times, when Harwich was the only safe haven between London and the Humber. The town thrived and, by 1657, was heavily defended with forti-fications and guns.
These days, the military structures lie unused, the threat of invasion from Holland having subsided. The main maritime activity is the ferry to The Hook, which fills the town for brief periods of the day with travellers either com-ing or going – but seldom, sadly, staying. I stayed. The hotel couldn’t understand why, and thought that I must be lost, or mad, or both. But I liked it there, the bustle across the water and the promise of the whole Essex coast stretching into the distance.
One morning, an autumnal mist spread across the estuary so that the distant cranes of Felixstowe loomed like giants. A booming foghorn reverberated in the still air, bouncing and echoing from shore to shore. Out of the mist, as though it was pushing
aside a gossamer curtain, a huge ocean liner heaved its way up the river, towering above our breakfast room so that its passengers could see my fried egg, should they wish. Or else they could admire the view of lovely Harwich as it woke to another day. That’s it. The end. Or the beginning. Depends.

The Beekeeper of Patagonia author biography
T he Beekeeper of Patagonia is the debut novel from U
N Owan, who was brought up in Buckinghamshire, and now lives in Highams Park. After studying poli-tics and modern history at the universities of Kent and then Oxford, he decided to broaden his horizons even further and set out to ex-plore the world. Having worked in approximately ten different places across the globe, including New York City, the Amazon Rainforest, the Fijian Islands, and Lapland, the author settled down to life in London.
The less itinerant lifestyle in the city has allowed him the time to write the novel which he had been thinking about during his nomadic adventures. After two years of writing, editing and re-writing, “The Beekeeper of Patagonia” was published in March 2014 and is available both in paperback and on Kindle.
Coming across accounts of pensioners who start to commit crime, and intrigued by the knowledge that Welsh is a recognised minority language in Patagonia, the two aspects were brought together as an idea for a novel. It tells the fictional story of Audrey Monkton, a seventy-five year old local mayor from Wales who unexpectedly steals money from the council and runs away to the Welsh com-munity in Patagonia where she grew up.
Hopefully, if this book achieves some success, it will be followed by future novels as writing, like a bug, becomes something which is hard to cure once bitten and infected.

F ireworks commonly cause stress and worry to pets, as well as to their owners trying to ensure the well being of them.
So here’s our guide to help you and your furry friends prepare for firework festivities. Your pet is likely to feel safer if you’re
around so don’t leave them alone It’s important to keep pets inside once the
fireworks start, so plan ahead and make sure any exercise and toileting is out of the way in good time
Allow enough time for natural products available from your vets such as DAP sprays, diffusers and collars, or medicines, to take effect (you may need to plan for this weeks in advance)
Keep your garden gate and doors shut, and make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing their collar and tag just in case they bolt in fear and escape
Don’t over fuss, this may indicate to them that there is indeed something to be fright-ened of
Some pets find the gentle pressure from specially designed products such as Thun-der shirts, coats or jumpers has a calming effect
Close the curtains and turn up the TV or radio nice and loud
Make sure there’s a cosy place where your pet can hide and feel secure. Often dogs will appreciate a den created under the kitchen table, a blanket on the floor behind the sofa or if they were crate trained, their crate
Distract pets with their favourite game, toy or a treat just before and during fireworks
It’s important not to punish any signs of stress or fear and remember to stay calm yourself
Unfortunately firework parties are not con-fined to one evening and depending on your location it can be an ongoing problem at this time of year. If you would like any advice, then please ask a member of staff at your local Vets who will be happy to offer further advice.

W alking is exercise that the doctors recommend. We
are spoilt for lovely guided walks from Chingford in all directions. However Ching-ford is fast becoming ‘The Place’ to find alternative ways to get fit, tone up and stay healthy. Local church halls and other venues provide oppor-tunities for Tai Chi, Zumba, Kick Boxing, Lawn Green Bowls, Golf, Table Tennis, Line Dancing etc. You can even join in ‘Military Fitness’ sessions across Chingford Plain. The local Parks are also providing all sorts of fitness classes for free.
FitSteps® is the new craze to hit Chingford, just as we are getting back into watching Strictly Come Dancing! It’s been especially formu-lated by Strictly Come Dancing's Ian Waite & Natalie Lowe along with Mark Foster, the Olympic swim-mer. It’s ideal for toning, building muscle strength and slimming down. You do not need a partner - it's a fitness class. The moves are easy to pick up.
Local trainer, Jacky Logan leads local classes at Mornington Hall, just off ‘The Green’ and will also be starting a new class at the Masonic Hall , oppo-site Chingford Station in September. FitSteps Classes are also run by Maria Louise at St Teresa’s Hall.
FitSteps® is amazingly good fun. It is the first
dance fusion of its kind which blends the elegant movements of Ballroom and the up-tempo pace of Latin dances, with a series of tried and tested fit-ness methods into a simple, easy to follow class, that works, tones and sculpts the whole body. Just one 45-minute session can burn up to a staggering 700 calories. Strictly’s Natalie Lowe ex-plains “The energetic classes combine interval training through a series of dance moves from the Jive, Cha Cha Cha and Samba to keep the heart rate raised, with a range of slower movements and postures from the Waltz and the Rumba that use muscular strength to tone the torso, arms and legs, offering a unique
series of movements that when grouped together have the greatest effect on the body.”
The dances are broken down into easily learnable sections which can be carried out at varying levels of effort, making it suitable for people of all levels of fitness and age ranges.
Jacky says “Before you know it, you have learnt the basics of seven or eight dances and could sur-vive any formal ball. I have several parent-child com-bos that attend together - a mother aged 65 and her daughter aged 45, and also a man in his 50s who comes with his wife and daughter who is in her 20s. The Music is really inspiring. Tracks such as
‘Jailhouse Rock’, ‘Party Rock Anthem’ and ‘Dance With Me Tonight’, FitSteps®, is an energetic class that not only works every part of the body without you even realising it, but it is also great fun. Not only that, you are also learning a skill; the basic foundation of ball-room and Latin American dancing. You will soon be dancing round your living room with the Stars of Strictly!”
Getting Fit in Chingford! Exercise in Chingford – FITSTEPS. It’s Strictly Fun!

HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club. I decided to join one of Ray’s bridge courses to try it for myself. I know a few people who play bridge and find it a stimulating and sociable game. I had also interviewed Ray for the articles in The Chingford Directory for 2011, 2012 and 2013. The article also appeared in The West Essex Directory in 2012 and 2013.
There were about 12 new players when I joined and Ray started us off with games of mini bridge progressing to bridge. I found the lessons were well planned and challenging and Ray gave us lots of mate-rial to follow up each lesson. It was fun learning with others and there was always plenty of support and encouragement from Ray and the other players. This is what Ray said,
“Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.
Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challeng-ing, frustrating but never boring.
It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.
Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a cou-ple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.
From Monday 20th October I shall be giving eve-ning lessons from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. These will be on every Monday except Christmas and bank holidays.
I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.
Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and bis-cuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfort-able home environment.
Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. There is a 2 hour supervised play session on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30pm for £5 per person.
For those who wish to improve their bridge play I organise intermediate evening lessons on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 7.30 – 9.30pm.”
If you are thinking of joining Ray’s course and would like to take advantage of the special beginner’s offer send your cheque for £50 with your name, address, home and mobile phone numbers to Ray at the address below. For more details contact Ray on 020 8281 8376 or go to www.eastlondonbridge.co.uk.
Profile: East London Bridge Club
SPECIAL BEGINNER’S OFFER If you wish to pay in advance for the first five lessons of the course, you will be given the course book (retail price £25) free of charge on the first lesson. Payment to arrive before 10th October. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, please send your cheque for £50 to RAY GREEN 22 Horsley Road Chingford London E4 7HX

T he award winning Chingford Mount Dental Prac-tice is adding to its expertise, and the multi-disciplinary practice has now added The Ching-
ford Therapy Clinic to their highly successful award winning practice.
Jimmy Michael and his assistant Margaret are now based at the Dental Practice having had an extremely successful osteopathy clinic based in the area for over 10 years, treating all areas of the body. They provide high quality and affordable Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Chiropractor, Sports Massage and Acupuncture treat-ments. The Chingford Therapy Clinic is able to help in many acute and chronic conditions.
The Chingford Mount Dental Practice has been help-ing patients for 75 years and has evolved from a small practice with one dentist working in a small house to the state of the art practice that it has now become. Dentistry has changed dramatically and this is reflected in the expertise that is offered there. They are a multi-disciplinary practice with a highly qualified team of dental specialists offering a range of treatments from ortho-dontists, oral surgeons, endontist – root canal treat-ment, cosmetic dentistry, family dentistry, teeth whiten-ing, implants to high quality dentures.
Dr Raj Gogna, principal dentist and owner of the practice, explained how the practice has grown over the last 25 years. They now have a team of specialist, highly experienced dentists which allows all treatments to be performed ‘in-house’. They also receive referrals from other dentists. They have recently received the prestig-ious award ‘Best Aesthetic Dental Practice for the South of England’, as well as being finalists for many other awards in recent years. The team works together to deliver excellent customer care and to give a 5 star service in a relaxing, comfortable and modern environ-ment.
All of their dentists, nurses and staff are members of professional organisations and regularly undertake train-ing to ensure they continue to deliver high standards of care. They conduct regular client surveys and act on the feedback that is received. They have the highest stan-dard of cross infection control and cleanliness in their practice and they can offer sedation to assist nervous patients and those with dental phobias. The practice is accredited by BUPA, HSA and other leading insurers and are also members of the BDA Good Practice Scheme and accredited by Investors in People.
Jimmy explained that they are expanding their services and have now become a dual pain clinic, treating all painful areas of the body including neck and back pain, clicking/locking and painful jaws – any area of the body. The Chingford Therapy Clinic’s aim is to treat the prob-lem and associated areas and to get people ‘back on their feet’ as quickly as possible. 95% of the treatment is with hands on therapy and 5% could be with acupunc-
ture this could include use of a TENS machine which is attached to the acupuncture needles, which is fantastic for chronic lumbar pain (lower back pain).
Jimmy offers up to 30 minutes free injury or posture assessment with follow up spine or orthopaedic tests, if appropriate, to the area and diagnosis. He will explain the problem and if appropriate recommend a course of treatment or advice on how to manage it yourself. Jimmy said he would like our readers to see that “we are transparent and will not sell treatments that are not necessary.” He also said that they will always try and see people within 24 hours.

Dr Raj Gogna explained how he has also worked very closely with Jimmy Michael and his team. He said that many people who have a history of long standing headaches or migraine or neck ache have found that their com-plaints could be due to misalign-ment of the jaw. Dentists can make mouth splints to wear, to realign the jaw. On some occa-sions, further alternative treat-ment is required where Jimmy can perform jaw manipulation and realign and relax the muscles of the jaw.
Dr Gogna spoke about the award winning Chingford Mount Dental Surgery. They have in-vested in state of the art equipment and have a range of multi- skilled specialists working at the surgery. • Orthodontist - specialising in braces • Periodontist - specialise in gums • Oral surgeon – specialists in dental implants • Endodontist – who is a root canal specialist • Prosthodontist – crown and cosmetic specialist The surgery receives many referrals from local dentist for non-routine complex treatments. Local dentists often do not have the skills, knowledge or equipment to undertake complicated treatments. There are huge benefits that the surgery has to offer in that they have multi-specialists all co-ordinated under one roof. When they received their award for the ‘Best Aesthetic Prac-tice in the South of England’ the judging panel recog-nised and acknowledged the vast array of skills within the practise offering multi-disciplinary care the skills of consultant orthodontists who work in hospitals as well as at the Chingford Mount Dental Surgery.
The oral cancer rate has increased by approximately 40% over the last 10 years, and as part of their dental treatment all patients are automatically screened for signs of oral cancer. This is a routine check of the soft tissue of the mouth as well as the glands/lymph nodes.
Dr Naidoo, a highly experienced Facial Aesthetic consultant is also part of the team at the Dental Practice and he also works as a consultant at Spire Bushey Hos-pital, Watford and at the BMI Cavell Hospital, Enfield. He has a keen interest in facial rejuvenation and has worked in the field of aesthetic medicine for the last 9 years.
Dr Naidoo is offering a new treatment for Vitiligo, which is a long-term condition that causes pale, white patches to develop on the skin due to lack of a chemical called melanin. He begins with a test patch initially and is then able to match the skin tones to allow the skin to repigment the affected areas. Dr Naidoo offers a range of treatments: • Wrinkle relaxation for forehead lines, frown lines and crows feet • Dermal fillers for deep frown lines, nose to mouth folds, marionette lines and lip enhancement
• Laser treatments for fine veins around the nose and face and pigmentation due to sun damage • Fractional laser treatments for acne scarring and skin resurfacing • Hair reduction for face, upper lip and neck areas • Vi-Peel for facial rejuvenation, sun damage, fine lines and active acne • Laser hair removal for arms, legs and back • Laser treatment for leg veins up to 4mm in diameter, including red, blue and purple veins • Minor surgical treatments for skin lesions, including skin tags, sebaceous cysts • Injectable treatment for hyperhidrosis • Mole screening for melanoma • Skin Peel Dermal Infusion
The last word goes to Barbara Howlett, a patient who was at a recent open day event that I attended; ‘I have been a patient for over 20 years, which in itself is a testament to how satisfied I am. I have total confidence in the treatments and I receive a professional service with a friendly touch’.
