Data accuracy
Dependent on multiple variables:
• The ground resolution of the imagery GSD
• Degree of image overlap
• Number, distribution and co-ordinate accuracy of GCPs
• Terrain texture and profile
Indicative ranges:
• ~2m accuracy achievable without GCPs for low altitude imagery
• < 5cm accuracy achievable with optimal sensor, altitude and GCP configuration
Increased accuracy is ultimately more time consuming.
Accuracy can be increased by using RTK GPS, optical flow and other on-board sensors

Where UAV’s Excel
Dull
Dirty
Dangerous ‘In addition to the above categories,
UAV’s possess other unique advantages,
such as fast mobilisation and
deployment at low running cost, when
compared with alternatives’

Key differences
Feature Small Civil UAV’s Drone –
Predator, Reaper, Global Hawk etc.
Wingspan 3.3m Reaper 19m; Global Hawk 40 m
Cost $10s to $100s of
thousands
Reaper US$17 M
Global Hawk US$130 M
Communications Telemetry modems High bandwidth satellite downlink/uplink – very
expensive
Crew Minimum 1-2 Minimum 3 flight crew plus ground crew etc.

UAV’s & manned Aviation
While UAV’s do not entirely replace manned aircraft, they do
provide a very large niche of their own
They are generally cheaper to operate and faster to mobilise &
deploy
Require less prior planning and maintenance
Can be operated by pilots with less training than a CPL pilot
Are ideal in areas where the work being carried out fits into the
categories of Dull, Dirty & Dangerous, plus provide increased access
and manoeuvrability
