Summerishereandfortunatelyit’stheeasiesttimetogetyourkidsinvolvedinphysicalactivities.Thereareseveralfunthingstodothatwillkeepyourkidsfitandhealthyduringthistimeofyear.Somearefreeandsomehaveaminimalcharge.Findoutwhatworksbestforyourfamilytoensuregoodhealthforeveryone.Herearesomeideas:

• Gooutsideandplay–Playingoutsideisalwaysfreeofcharge.Ifyouhaveabackyardorlivenearaparkoropenfield,youcanplayagameoftagortossaroundafootball.Bythetimeyougethomethekidswilldefinitelybereadyforbed.

• Goforawalk‐Afterdinnerisagoodtimetogoforabriskwalkandcontinueaconversationstartedwhileeating.Thisisalsoagreatwaytoopenupthelinesofcommunicationbetweenparentsandchildren.

• Sports/TrainingCamps–Askyourchildreniftheywouldliketotryasport.CheckwithyourlocalYMCAorBoysandGirlsClubtofindoutwhattheyhavetooffer.Thereisusuallyamember/nonmemberchargetoparticipateincampssuchasthese.

Schoolsareremovingrecessandphysicaleducationfromthecurriculumwhenitismoreimportantnowthaneverforparentstotakeonthishugeresponsibility.

Obesityisdefinedverysimply:beingexcessivelyoverweight.Itisdeterminedbyusingweightandheighttocalculateanumbercalledthe“bodymassindex”orBMI.

Childhoodobesityisarealdiseasethathasmorethantripledinthelast30years.Inchildrenages6‐11itincreasedfrom6.5%in1980to19.6%in2008.Inadolescentsages12‐19itincreasedfrom5%to18.1%duringthesametimeframe.

Manytimes,parentsthatareoverweightorobesehavechildrenthatarealsooverweightorobese.Parentsmustsetagoodexampleforkidstofollowbybeingphysicallyactivethemselves

Canyouimaginebeingemployedbyahuge,well‐knownuniversityandbeingaPhDcandidateforthesameuniversity?Addtothat,raisingtwin5year‐oldboys.Notmanyofuscould.ButthatisexactlywhatCedricandAishaKenneraredoing,andverywellImightadd.

CedricandAishawerecollegesweetheartsatSouthernIllinoisUniversityatCarbondaleandarenowbothemployedbyandcandidatesforthePhDattheUniversityofArkansasinFayetteville.Ifthatisnotenough,their5year‐oldtwins,MekhiandKyran,makesuretheystaygoodandbusy.

IaskedAishahowherfamilyfindsthetimetostayfitwithalloftheday‐to‐dayresponsibilities.

TKAT:Whatisitlikelivinginacollegetownwithtwin5year‐oldboys?

AK:Collegetownshavebeenverygoodforus.Theyhavegreatschoolsforchildren.Arkansasmaybealittlelightonthesocialaspectforthemorematurecrowdbutasfarasthingsforelementaryagechildrenithasbeengreat.Theboyshaveplayedsoccer,theyareininvolvedinagreatsummerprogramandtheyhavetakengymnasticslessons.Nextist‐ball,martialartsandpiano.Theywillbeverywellroundedlittlemen!

TKAT:Whyisphysicalfitnessimportanttoyourfamily?

AK:Itisimportanttoustobeinshapeandtoteachourchildrenthatbeingactiveisapartofhealthyliving.WedowatchTVbutwewouldmuchratherbeplayingordoingsomethingthatkeepsusallmoving.

TKAT:HowdoyouandCedricfindtimetoexercisewithyourbusyschedules?

AK:Exerciseservesadualpurposeforme,itkeepsmefitanditalsohelpsmealleviatestress.Ithinkwebothfeelthatitisimportanttostayactive,eatrightandstayfit.Becauseweareinour30’sittakesabitmoretoloseweightandittakesmoreintentionalactionandplanningtokeepmoving.Webothwanttobearoundtowatchourboysgrowup,getmarriedandhavetheirownchildren.Wecan’tdothatifwedon’ttakecareofourselves.

TKAT:Howdoyoukeeptheboysactivewithsuchdemandingcareers?

AK:MekhiandKyranareournumberonepriority.Wewanttobeasgoodorbetterparentsasweareprofessionals.Wemaybetiredsometimesbutweknowthatourboyswillbenefitfrominvolvementandultimatelywewillaswell.

Mixallingredientstogetherandmakesurezucchiniiswellcoated.Bakeinabutterorspraycoateddishat350degreesfor30minutesuntilgoldenbrown.Youcanalsodoublethisrecipe.Ifdoubledyoumustcookforatleast45minutes.
