HAPPY VALLEY: DONKER STRATE IN SEPTEMBER VERBY
Lig kom vir nuwe buurtRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
September voltooi sal wees, sê Van Dalen.Die straatligte sal in al die strate aange-
bring word – nie net op die hoofroetes nie,het Van Dalen bygevoeg.

Sport has the power to change theworld. It has the power to inspire and the
power to unite people. These are the words of a former South Af-
rican president, the late Nelson Mandela –an idea which has reverberated throughtime and holds true to this day.
In Kleinvlei, one person is doing just that, using sport as a tool to create social cohe-sion. Dean August, a play leader at the Cityof Cape Town who works at the Kleinvleicommunity hall, is one of 80 staff memberswho form part of the City’s department ofsport, recreation and amenities, keepingresidents from Blackheath, Dennemere,Hillview and Spandau fit and healthythrough its daily recreational programme.
The department has committed millionsof rand to provide recreational programmeswhich unify communities and encourage ahealthy lifestyle among its residents butwould not be a success without the dedica-tion and drive of the staff who pull it all to-gether, says Belinda Walker, Mayco mem-ber for community services and special pro-jects.
“I am passionate about all sport. Sport canbe used as a tool to develop self-esteem, lead-ership skills, instil discipline and build so-cial cohesion in communities.“Bringing a smile to the face of a child,
youth, adult or senior in the community isa huge reward and our programmes contrib-ute towards creating a safer and happiercommunity,” saysDean, who lives inMalibuVillage.
Deanbelieves inproviding anopportunityfor all residents to participate in the City’sprogrammes. “I would like to see our parksbuzzing with people and activities. To makethis come true, we need to connectwith com-munity workers in the area who also visitthe recreational hub regularly.“We all need to work together to see how
best we can bring our parks to life and bringresidents back to the parks,” he added.Research indicates that sustained involve-
ment in sport and recreation programmescan help to combat challenges such as alco-hol and drug abuse, crime and vandalism incommunities, Walker said.A variety of activities are offered at the
Kleinvlei community hall which includeaerobics, seniors arts and crafts activities, activities for people with disabilities, an aft-er school programme, skate park as well aship-hop programme fromMonday to Friday.Other activities include a bootcamp, karateand fitness programmes.
Sport used to buildsocial cohesion
Dean Augustus, a play leader at the Kleinvleicommunity hall, uses sport to create socialcohesion among residents in Kleinvlei, Blackheath and Spandau.

Contractors finishSiyenyuka trainingThe construction industry is often de-scribed as a challenging industry, especial-ly for the smaller fish in the pond havingto compete with their much larger counter-parts.
Thanks to the completion of an advancedtraining andmentoring programmehowev-er, 15 of these smaller fish will now be ableto compete in the big leagues, says the de-partment of transport and public works. The department runs a contractor devel-

Following the recent theft ofmuch need-ed state pensionmoney fromanelderlycouple in Kuils River, the South Afri-
can Social Security Agency (Sassa) has is-sued a renewedwarning for beneficiaries tobe more vigilant when using their paymentcards.
The elderly couple from Roer Street, Jag-tershof in Kuils River was defrauded out ofR600 late lastmonth after receiving a phonecall from an alleged fraudster and sharingtheir personal details on the telephone.Last week Shivani Wahab, spokesperson
for Sassa, discouraged people from doingthis and also to ignore fraudulent text mes-sages.
“We would like to request beneficiariesnot to respond to SMS messages offeringthem airtime, electricity and other servi-ces.
“Beneficiaries need to understand that byresponding to these messages, they are ac-tually taking on a ‘subscription’ service andthe amounts will be deducted off the bank
account through the EFT debit system eachmonth,” Wahab said.Beneficiaries have been warned not to
use their Sassa cards as security for loansor to purchase any financial services prod-ucts, to not respond to cell phone SMSeswhere companies offer products suchas air-time and other financial products againsttheir card, and to not authorise deductionsto be made against the card except for theone funeral policy deduction that shouldnot exceed 10% of the social grant value, which Sassa has authorised in terms of leg-islation.Wahab said their branded payment card
was introduced to allow social grant benefi-ciaries the option of accessing their socialgrant anywhere in the country and at anytime, using multiple payment channelssuch as ATMs, cash paypoints and selectedapproved merchant stores.“However, the introduction of the Sassa
payment card into the banking system pro-videdanopportunity for social grantbenefi-ciaries to be exploited through unautho-rised deductions,” Wahab said.V Report problems to Sassa at 0800 60 1011.

This is the 28th year that thecompetition is held.
TheresaCupido fromBellvillewon the Job Creator Award inthe 2014 competition.
Her business idea sparked in2005 while listening to a debateon the radio about the shortageof black South African femaleentrepreneurs and the need forinfrastructure in the countryleading up to the 2010 SoccerWorld Cup.
Owning a business and em-powering people have alwaysbeen Theresa’s dream as shegrew up in a family of business-minded individuals.
At the time, she was assisting her hus-band in writing reports for the Road Acci-dent Fund and it was through her involve-ment with the fund that she developed aninterest in the roadmarking industry. Shedecided to start her own business in theroad marking and civil engineering field.
Since its establishment in August 2006,her company, ATN Group, has undertak-en a number of projects for the Depart-ment of Transport, City of CapeTown, sev-eral municipalities, civil engineers andlarge property companies, and today sheemploys between 250 and 300 staff.
Despite tough economic times, entre-preneurs are ready and able to identifyand capitalise on opportunities.
While very rewarding, entrepreneur-ship can be a tough journey, and entrepre-neurs need support to grow their busi-nesses to levels at which they can contrib-ute to job creation and economic growth.

Project 021 will be telling thestory of a “not so typical”Cape Flats family when
they present Given to Fly at theBellville Civic Centre on Friday17 June. While the production, which
features young actors fromacross Cape Town, has beenstaged in previous years, Project021’s David Cornelson saysthey’ll have the biggest cast andcrew ever when they present theshow this time round.“The production has grown in
popularity with many youngpeople stepping forward to par-ticipate in the showcase.”Based in Kuils River, Project
021 was established to developand promote creative arts in un-derprivileged communities, fo-cusing on learners in publicschools. The organisation cre-ates opportunities tounearth, de-velop and showcase young talentand runs programmes inHeidev-eld, Wynberg, Lavender Hill andBellville. The cast for Given to Fly hail
fromHeideveld,WelcomeEstate,Mitchell’s Plain, Lavender Hill,Bellville, Kuils River and LotusRiver. The production tells the story
of a Manenberg family who riseabove their prevailing negativeelements to reach their desti-nies.Sidney, the father of the house,
is scarred by the hurts and disap-pointments of an oppressivepast. Together with his God-fear-ing wife, Brenda, he has five de-
termined and outspoken daugh-ters. With life on the Cape Flatsas his only reference, Sidneystruggles to understand the bigdreams and aspirations of hisdaughters.“While the production will ac-
knowledge and address some ofthe sad realities of life on theFlats, it is also filled with lots ofhumour, streetwise wit, andhigh-energy singing and danc-ing,” David explains. He adds that many of the
learners on stage won’t havefamilymembers or friends at theshow to watch them.“We would therefore like to
call on you to support the event,as we are aiming for a full houseof support for these talentedlearners.”V Tickets for Given to Fly, which startsat 19:30 at the Bellville Civic Theatre, cost R60. The Grind Indoor Sprint Obstacle Racetaking place at the Velodrome in Bell-ville on Saturday is attracting atten-
tion from athletes of every discipline. Thefirst indoor event of its kind in SouthAfrica, the ISOCR, as the team calls it, is a one kilo-metre obstacle course race that – for achange – doesn’t involve mud. It does, how-ever, involve up to fifteen obstacles that willchallenge all comers on the day. What isunique to this Grind is the fact that it takesplace in an arena in front of a large cheeringaudience, spurring competitors of all levelsof fitness on to do their utmost. The founder of TheGrindObstacle Course
Racing, Mat Barlett, is excited about thischange in venue, and believes that – particu-larly in the winter months – indoor racing
is here to stay. “Wehave combinedCrossFit,gymnastics, and traditionalObstacleCourseRacing to create a brand new experience forathletes and audience alike.”Is it only for highly trained sportspeople?“Not at all!Whilewe do expect top athletes
to compete – and we have a lot who have en-tered already – we are also aiming to attractpeople from all walks of life who are up foran unusual challenge.”Mat explains that the family element is
part of the attraction, with spectators will-ing on family and friends, and a Kids Obsta-cle Course thatwill be a scaled downversionof the main attraction.“Children from the age of four to 12 will
be able to participate on the Little Grind; ev-ery entrant will get a medal, and they can
do the course as often as they like.”The current drive is to get people to chal-
lenge others to compete head to head. Whilethere are substantial prizes – R10 000 eachto top male and female athletes and sizeablerunner-up prizes too – the aim is to get com-petitors to lay down challenges to others ofa similar fitness level. Cyclists who believethey are fitter than runners can prove apoint; soccer playerswhobelieve that socceris the most demanding game on the planetcan challenge their rugby counterparts.“We particularly would like to see gyms
laying down challenges to their members,”says Wayne Bruyns, a Grind director.“Gyms cater for multidisciplinary fitnesslevels, and we are hoping to get them to in-vite members to compete in this new chal-
lenge. Obstacle course racing tests a varietyof skills, ranging from sprinting to climbingand lifting. For a gym member it is an idealforum to check out their fitness levels.”The aim of the day is to combine sport, fit-
ness, camaraderie and fun, for spectatorsand participants alike.Mat and Wayne urge potential entrants to
get on board as soon as possible as there isan upper limit of entries. Interest in the raceis high – the ‘elite’ category is already fullysubscribed by top obstacle course racers andother athletes; places are available for the“underdog” category, so anybodywhowantsto challenge the elite should enter soon.V Go to http://www.thegrindrace.com/upcoming.html for online entries. Karting action returns to Killarney to closeoff the first half of the 2016Western ProvinceKarting Championship on Saturday wherelong-term forecasts predict cold and brightweather will play host to what will surely bethe hottest possible action. There are quite a few tight championship
duels underway, but nowhere closer than in60cc primary school Cape Maxterinos, where Charl Visser (Battery Energy Zanar-di) holds a slender two-point championshipadvantage over arch rival Joseph Oelz (Za-nardi). Neither can leave anything to chancethough, with Troy Dolinschek (Makita Ko-smic), TateBishop (Kosmic) andKaiVanZijl(CRG) having found form of late and all ofthem still well within striking distance,
while Jason MacBeath, younger Visserbrother Kyle andNicholas Sage all well wor-thy of putting it on the podium among thatpacked pre-teen grid. It’s also close among the smallest u.8Cadet

Trinitarians fans inUitsigwill get a rareopportunity to see their favourite teamand defending Northern Suburbs FA
Super League knock-out champs when theytake on league champions Invincible Cra-venby on Saturday. The game takes place at Symphony Park
in Belhar at 15:00.Trinitarians have lived by their mantra
this season – “taking it one game at a time’’.CoachWarrenMaarmanhas stated categori-cally that Trinitarians want to win theKnock-out Cup and defending their title isvery important for the club. There will beno doubt that Trinitarians go into this clashmeaning business, because for the club fromUitsig this is themost importantmatchnow.“I think it’s another exiting game for the
fans. Having said that, it’s never easyagainst Invincible Cravenby. I think it’s go-ing to be a great game and the team thatwants itmost on the daywill win it. Hopeful-ly we’ll be much more determined thanthem.“We’ll focus more on them as a team, but
I also thinkTrinitarians have fantastic play-ers . If you look through their team, theyhave quality players,” said Maarman.Invincible Cravenby have always been a
difficult side for Trinitarians, and have sel-dom given away points. In the first roundmatch, the team from Cravenby were shell-shocked when they lost to Trinitarians.Trinitarians will bemoan themissed scor-
ing chances they have had, particularly intheir last league match against InvincibleCravenby two weeks ago. The score was 2-1,but could have been much more than that.
But any team that plays against Trinitari-ans gives extra effort, and no motivation isneeded. This is what makes them a possiblebanana peel for Trinitarians’ title aspira-tions. Maarman has high regard for MosesFicks, saying that the Invincible Cravenbyhead coach is a very clever strategist whohe has faced onmany occasions in his coach-ing career and it will be another tough en-counter on Saturday. It is a fact that the knock-out trophy
throws up many David versus Goliath en-counters where history and pedigree go outthe widow, because the so-called minnowsthrow everything at their opponents if onlyto prove a point. The underdogs – as Invincible Cravenby
are – will be fearless as they have nothingto loose while the big guns have everythingto loose.
Reuban Jacobs, the Trinitarians striker,is a playerwho can play in various roles andadapts very well to a match situation. This is because his match awareness is so
high. He has played out wide on the left andright, and as a centre forward or behind thestrikers.
. Central AFC is a squad that look strongenough to compete in all competitions. Thismeans they will be a handful away againstUnited at Symphony Park.
. Belhar Spurs’ defence also have someworries this weekend when they face Ma-troosfontein. Spurs continue to leak goals, which is a worrying sign for any side caughtup in a relegation battle.
. Kuils River United travel to BelharSpurs tomeet Blue Downs Spurs. Bishop La-vis face Kalksteenfontein and Island Roversmeet Ravensmead AFC.
