jaar gekies is omaan die Paralimpiese Spele in Lon-
den te gaan deelneem.
Janhet gevordervan nkaalvoetseunopdie stow-
werige plaaspaaie van Riebeeck-Kasteel tot by in-
ternasionale atletiekbane. Sy voete sal nou klap op
dieselfde tartanbaan waarop atletieklegendes soos
Usain Bolt sy hakskene vir sy teenstanders gewys
het.
Jan is tans vierde op die wreldranglys in die
5 000 m en symikpunt is om die topdrie op die Spele
te haal. Hy en sy gids, Duane Fortuin (ook van
Kuilsrivier), vertrek op 21 Augustus na die Spele.
Vir Jan is dit die hoogtepunt van sy lewe. Kyk,
jy gaanniehorkomasdieParalimpieseSpelenie,
het hy verlede week aan TygerBurger by die Coet-
zenburg-atletiekbaan in Stellenbosch ges. Jan en
Duane het hier voorberei. Dit is gerel deur die
Suid-Afrikaanse Sportkonfederasie en Olimpiese
Spele-komitee (Saskok).
Di nederige Jan is met gedeeltelike sig gebore,
maar het op 6-jarige ouderdom heeltemal blind ge-
raak. Vanjaar is dit al 19 jaar wat die atletiekgogga
hom beet het. Hy s sy blindheid of agtergrond het
hom nooit gekniehalter nie. Dit gaan nie oor die
feit dat jy n plaaskind is en dit nie kan maak nie.
Jy moet net glo jy kan dit doen. Di twee het op
20 Junie vanjaar gehoor hulle kwalifiseer vir die
SA span. Ek was heel opgewonde, ons het Kuilsri-
vier rooi geverf! het Jan ges.
Myouers het ook di gawe gehad,maar het nooit
geleenthede gekry nie. My broers en susters was ta-
lentvol in padwedlope, maar weens huislike ver-
pligtinge konhulle nie hul drome verwesenlik nie.
Duane, wat al agt jaar sy gids is, s: Alles het
goed uitgewerk, ons kan net die Here dank. Dit is
deel van God se plan dat ons Spele toe gaan.

ne.
Die twee sportmanne van Kuilsrivier
hoop die hele Kuilsrivier-gemeenskap sal
hul deelname op TV volg.
Jan se wedlope is op 5 September om
11:25 en die eindronde van die 5 000 m
(T11- die kategorie vir algehele blindes) is
op 7 September om 20:10.

Suspects found to be in illegal possesion
of ammunition and firearms were arre-
sted in Wesbank by the Mfuleni police.
Capt Nomathemba Muavha, communica-
tions officer for the Mfuleni police says the
police acted on information supplied and
went to search a house in Cadotte Street,
Wesbank last week.
Muavha said: The female owner of the
house let the police in and they found one
suspect sleeping on the coach with three
rounds of live ammunition. In the bedroom
police found the second suspect with an ille-
gal firearm (.38 special) with a serial num-
ber, loaded with five live rounds of ammuni-
tion underneath his pillow and the third sus-
pect was found on the other bed with a small
coffee container with ten live rounds of .38
special ammunition.
Police tracked the owner of the .38 special
revolver to Montague, but established that
no reported case of stolen or lost firearm had
been opened.
The three suspects aged between 16 years
and 23 years were charged with possession
of ammunition and possession of illegal fire-
arms with ammunition. They appeared at
the BlueDowns Court last weekMonday and
remain in custody.
Muavha said: As the policewewant to en-
courage the community to come forward
with information pertaining to the thugs
that are living amongst them.
The police with the help of the communi-
ty can root out the violence in Wesbank.

The Synagogue of Nations church in
Penhill will be hosting an evening of song
at the Kleinvlei Community Hall in Klein-

Twomen fromMfuleni were arrested for be-
ing in thepossesionof drugswithanestimat-
ed street value of R30 000. The men had al-
ready appeared in the Blue Downs Magis-
trate Court on these charges.
Mfuleni police were on recent patrols in
Extension Three, Mfuleni. W/O November
Philander, spokesperson from the Police
Western Cape Media Centre said while po-
lice were busy with these patrols they fol-
lowed up on information received about a
break-in at a business premises inExtension
Three.
While the members were busy with in-
vestigative work, they smelled burning dag-
ga coming from one of the houses. When the
members searched the house they found
110 g of mandrax powder.
The men, aged 27 and 32 remain in custo-
dy.
Twomen arrested for drugs
TheKleinvlei police are appealing to parents
to ensure their children dont listen tomusic
on their cellphones in public.
This warning follows after police reported
a spike in incidents reported where learners
were robbed of their cellphones, to and from
local schools.
W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, communica-
tions officer for the Kleinvlei police said:
We realised in all of these cases children
were robbed because they walk with their
earphones in their ears listening to music.
We want to warn parents to tell their chil-
dren not to do this, also because when they
have earphones in, they cant be observant.
Parents must be alert.
She referred to an incident earlier this
year when a youngman lost his life when he
was knocked over by a train, whilst having
earphones in his ears close to the Buttskop
railway crossing.
She listed these streets, as the streets tar-
geted by robbers: Blue downs Way, Melton
Rose, LondonWay, MalibuWay and also the
Forest Heights area.
Mothoalo further says the other concern
police have is the high rise of the theft out
of motor vehicles, especially in the Tuscany
Glen residential area. Weve had 16 cases of
theft out of motor vehicles reported.
She says in themajority of these cases peo-
ple have left valuable items in the vehicle,
where criminals can see it. The other mis-
take people make is to leave their vehicles
idling outsidewhile quickly running back in
the house. This says Mothoalo gives crimi-
nals an opportunity to steal items out of the
vehicles. We are warning people not to do
it.
Police offered the following safety tips:
. Dont leave packages or other valuables
lying in the car;
. Install an immobiliser/alarm if one has
not been installed;
. Activate alarm whenever you leave
your vehicle;
. Never leave vehicle unlocked even in
your own driveway, or park in dark and de-
serted places;
. Conceal your cellphonewhen in a public
place and when walking in the street;
. Dont leave your cellphone lying on a
seat in the car;
. Put your phone on silent so that it will
not attract any attention from passers-by,
. Be aware of pick-pockets.

In September 2013, Karl Bremer Hos-
pitalwill, for the first time ever, boast
an emergency centre.
Once in operation the hospital will be
able to treat trauma patients from the
northern and Tygerberg subdistricts, ex-
cluding Delft.
Over R70 million R53 million on the
construction and an estimated R20 mil-
lion on equipment will be spent on the
new centre at the hospital.
A R3 million CAT scanner forms part
of the equipment to be installed.
The new centrewill broaden the scope
of healthcare services to all district level
patients from the northern and Tyger-
berg subdistricts, Western Cape Health
Minister Theuns Botha said at a media
briefing at the hospital last week.
Dr Lawrence Bitalo (director: primary
healthcare) said the emergency centre is
motivated by the need of people from the
northern suburbs.
He said where people staying in the vi-
cinity had to go to Tygerberg Hospital in
the past for the treatment of injuries such
as a broken leg, they could now visit Karl
Bremer hospital.
During the construction process, the
other services at the hospital will carry
on undisturbed.
Dr Linda Naude, the hospitals CEO,
said Karl BremerHospital is classified as
a district level hospital and should offer
a full district hospital package of care to
the northern and Tygerberg subdistricts,
excluding Delft.
When this hospital opened its doors in
1956 it was used as an academic hospital
for the University of Stellenbosch.
When Tygerberg Hospital was founded
20 years later, Karl Bremer became a hos-
pital for the admission of private pa-
tients.
In 1996 thishospital openedasa second-
ary hospital for government patients and
in 2009 itwas classified as adistrict hospi-
tal, but without emergency services.
This will change with the completion
of the emergency centre next year.
At the moment, the closest medical
emergency unit for Bellville residents is
Tygerberg Hospital.

volle seun van Kuilsrivier en sy droom
om aan die SA karatekampioenskaps-
toernooi te kan deelneem.
Die toernooi sal van 24 tot 25 Augustus in
Durban plaasvind.
Die 10-jarige Cintino Jnete (C.J.) Mller
van Sarepta, Kuilsrivier, is n uitblinker in
karate. Hy behoort aan die klub Fujian Guju
Ryu Karate SA in Kuilsrivier.
N net twee jaar het C.J. gewys hy het n
natuurlike talent vir di sport toe hy goed
genoeg was om aan die nasionale kampioen-
skapsbyeenkoms deel te neem.
Syafrigter, SensaiDeanSias, sC.J. is baie
hardwerkend en mis nooit n oefening nie.
Afhangend van sy prestasie is daar n
moontlikheid dat hy Suid-Afrika ook inter-
nasionaal sal kan verteenwoordig.
Ongelukkig is die onus op elke deelnemer
om self geld in te samel vir die vervoerkoste
om aan die SA toernooi te gaan deelneem.
Dit iswaarC.J. se probleem l,wantweens
persoonlike omstandighede sukkel hy om
di geld te bekom.
In n briefie skryf C.J.: My pa is dood en
my ma maak ons alleen groot. Ek behoort
aan Sensai Den Sias se karateklub. Omdat
ek baie goed in sport is, soek ek iemand wat
my kan borg vir die kampioenskapsbyeen-
koms in Durban. Ek is nog te klein om te
gaan werk.
Hymaakmeldingvandievele toekennings
wat hy al gewen het vir sy sport.
Buiten karate, neem C.J. ook deel aan
dans, ballet, sokker, krieket en kan hy ook
klavier speel.
Hy skryf verder: Myma probeer haar bes
en ek is baie lief vir haar, maar sy sukkel
ook. Ek is baie lief vir my sport, dans en my
skool. Hy is n leerling van die Laerskool
Kuilsrivier.
C.J. sluit af deur te s: Ek voel baie geluk-
kig en wil graag gaan, maar ons het nie geld
nie.
Syma, Carol, voeg by hymoet ook in Okto-
ber in Bloemfontein aan krieket gaan deel-
neem.
Hy is n baie unieke kind, s sy.
Sias s: Dit is sy droom om die Wes-Kaap
te verteenwoordig. Hy het baie goed gevor-
der van die Boland tot die Wes-Kaapse span
en nou die SAs.
Enigiemand wat n bydrae tot C.J. se koste

tings en hulle veiligheid behoort altyd

Dt was die boodskap by die kinderveilig-
heidsdag wat deur Diatesda-welwillend-
heidsorganisasie in Eersterivier gerel is.
Die dag maak deel uit van
hul kinderbeskermingsbe-
wusmaking-inisiatief waar
gefokus word op kinderveilig-
heid. As deel van die dag se
verrigting het brandweerbe-
amptes van Kuilsrivier die
kinders kom toespreek oor
veiligheid. Dit was ook n ge-
leentheid vir die leerlinge van
die Primre Skool Beverley
Park, Eersterivier, om kennis
te maak met die brandweer.
Die brandweerwa is op die
skoolterrein getrek en leerlin-
ge het grootoog na die rooi wa
gekyk en met die beamptes
kennis gemaak.
Mauresia Worship, maat-
skaplike werker van Diates-
da, het ges: Die dag het ook
gegaan omons dienste aan die
kinders bekend te stel. Kin-
ders het die idee inhul kopdat
maatskaplike werkers net
daar is om kinders van hul ge-

University of the Western Cape
(UWC) protested against Hillary
Clintons visit last Wednesday.
The US Secretary of State spo-
ke at the university and compli-
mented SouthAfrica, rating it in
the same standards that Ameri-
ca strive to meet.
Her uplifting words were ho-
wever not taken to heart by all,
as students under the banner of
Azapo Western Cape protested
outside calling her a killer.
Wewant the public to be awa-
re shesnotwelcome inSouthAf-
rica, saidThobelaTshali, one of
the protesting students.
The students stressed they did
not want South Africa to be suc-
ked into Americas web.
Although unrest erupted outs-
ide the campus there were a few
students who had some light re-
lief to add to an otherwise tense
situation.
It brings recognition to the
university and will hopefully
open up opportunities for us to
go overseas, said UWC student
Mzwandile Shabangu.
Another student, Ilse Morgan,
expressed amazement saying:
She inspires us as females, be-
cause shes a woman in power,
she said.
Although Clintons arrival
sparked the outcome of different
attitudes, many students felt the
strike unnecessary and believes
shes here for a greater cause.

She said South Africa had many of

of the Mandela generation.
You will be making decisions
about your future, she told students.
You will decide whether South Afri-
ca moves forward or backwards.
Clintons visit was aimed at ad-
vancing and deepening the US-South
African relationship.
Clinton said she first came to South
Africa in 1994 for the inauguration of
Nelson Mandela.
Weare now18 years removed from
that iconic moment. If youre a stu-
dent here at UWC, you were probably
just a toddler back then. A few of you
might not even have been born yet.
Youdidnt just growup in a democrat-
ic South Africa you grew up with a
democratic South Africa.
She said today, South Africa is dif-
ferent from the one shevisited in 1994,
and so too are the challenges the stu-
dents must confront and the opportu-
nities that are there for the seizing.
Like you, we are compared by our
nations history, Clinton said.
In South Africa, you have
achieved something few countries
have done. You have showed the
world that the way forward is not re-
venge, but rather reconciliation.

With only 10 matches before the close of
the season, therace for theNorthernSub-
urbs Football Union Super League title
has entered a very critical stage, as Ma-
troosfontein AFC will be looking for
nothing less than a win in the remaining
matches in order tomaintain the top spot
on the log.
Matroosfontein hosts Central AFC this
weekend and will be looking at extending
their stay at the top of the log in a match to
be played at Avonwood Park on Sunday at
14:00.
JohnDaniels, manager ofMatroosfontein,
says a win will allow them some breathing
space at the top, with the three Elsies River
teams breathing down Riverside Rangers
neck.
Trinitarians, Central and South End also
still have an outside chance, so there is still
a lot to play for in the remaining matches.
The league is far from far over, hence we
go to all our remaining matches looking for
nothing but a win. There are still a number
of teams in the chase, which means total fo-
cus will be key for us, explained Daniels,
who also urged allMatroosfontein faithful to
rally behind the team at this crucial stage
of the league.
Our joint efforts are paying off. The play-
ers commitment, the technical teams bril-
liant planning and support of management
has shown that the impossible is definitely
possible. Our defence is solid, midfield and
strikers are playing very offensive and en-
tertaining football. And to top it all, every-
one is scoring goals.
Matroosfontein is placed second on the Su-
per league log with 40 points from 20 match-
es.

Weneed to tackle the issueof inconsisten-
cy of form with the team. Its not that we are
playing badly; its just that we are not taking
our chances and the opposition is taking
theirs. Against Trinitarians at Bellville
Southwematched themon the field through-
out the first half, we created five scoring op-
portunities in the first 30 minutes then they
scored in the 40th minute. We also created
scoring chances in the second half but could
not find the back of the net.
We have proved that we can score goals
and defend solidly. I have said that we need
to show more urgency in our game, be more
clinical in front of goal and make the right
choices at crucial moments of the game.
There are 11 games to go and anything
canhappen. Ifwe collect points and the other
teams drop points then we are league cham-
pions again.
We will give United the respect that they
deserve, however,wearegoing toEricaPark
to collect three points.
Riverside Rangers are on top of the log
with 46 points while United are in the 13th
position on the log with 11 points.

the first inter-provincial of the CSA Track
Series on 17 August.
With Western Province dominating the
SATrackChamps inApril, expectations are
that they will continue this success on Fri-
day.
The Western Province team has been se-
lected and the stage is set for some stellar
achievements. South Africas only UCI
Track Trade Team, Team Intellibus, based
in Cape Town has also accepted an invitati-
on from the organisers and will boost WPs
strength.
