Gerund or To Infinitive
GERUND A) A gerund can be the subject of a sentence:
Example: Smoking is bad for your health. B) After prepositions and adverbs such as before, after, etc.
Example: I don´t like her way of speaking C) After possessive adjectives referred to a verbal action acting as a noun.
Example: I don´t understand his writing D) After the adjective "worth".
Example: It's worth visiting London E) Sport activities and hobbies after the verb "to go".
Example: He goes swimming G) After the following verbs: admit, anticipate, appreciate, avoid, consider, defend, delay, deny, detest, dread, enjoy, escape, excuse, face, fancy, finish, imagine, involve, mention, mind, miss, postpone, practice, resent, risk, suggest, tolerate, can´t face, can't help, can't bear, burst out, it's no good/use, feel like, give up, keep on, leave off, put off, can't stand.
Example: I enjoy swimming in the sea.
TO INFINITIVE A) It is used after most of adjectives:
Example: It's impossible to understand that letter. B) After the question words where, when, why, how, etc:
Example: He didn't know where to go C) To express purpose:
Example: He went to the shop to buy milk E) After the following verbs: agree, appear, arrange, attempt, ask, beg, can't afford, claim, choose, dare, decide, demand, deserve, expect, fail, happen, hesitate, hope, learn, long, manage, neglect, offer, plan, pretend, promise, refuse, resolve, seek, seem, struggle, swear, tend, threaten, train, turn out, want, wish.

Verbs followed by gerund or to infinitive
A) Love, Like, Dislike, Prefer, Hate + -‐ing
Example: I like smoking
After the conditional tense, they are followed by to infinitive
Example: I would like to go to the cinema
B) Start, Finish and Begin can be followed by gerund or to infinitive, it doesn't make any difference.
C) Remember, Forget, Regret, Stop, Try
1) Remember + -‐ing: Past event.
Example: I remember going to the cinema with my father when I was a child.
Remember + to infinitive: Future action or obligation.
Example: Remember to phone me when you arrive.
2) Forget + -‐ing: Past event.
Example: I forgot locking the door.
Forget + to infinitive: Future action or obligation.
Example: I had to phone the office but I forgot to do it.
3) Regret + -‐ing: Past event.
Example: I regret spending the money
Regret + to infinitive: to inform about bad news
Example: We regret to inform you that your application has been refused
4) Stop + -‐ing: To stop doing something, cease.
Example: He stopped talking to me five years ago
Stop + to infinitive: To stop to do something else.
Example: The students stopped the lesson to have a rest.
5) Try + -‐ing: to prove/experiment
Example: If you have problems in your back, try sleeping without a pillow

Try + to infinitive: to try to do something
Example: He tried to steal my wallet
D) Be careful with these other verbs:
Look forward to + -‐ing
To be used to
To be accustomed to + -‐ing
To get used to
Used to + infinitive
Make / Let + C.I. + infinitive without "to"
Example: She makes me laugh
Help
Warn
Advice + C.I. + to infinitive
Allow
Want
Example: My father doesn't allow me to go to ...
He wants me to do something
To be + adjective + to infinitive
Example: I am sorry to tell you this.
