Ho Chi Minh City and Surroundings

This map illustrates the satellite-detected surfacewaters extent in Ho Chi Minh City area andsurroundings, as observed from the Radarsat-2SAR image acquired on 18 December 2017. In theanalysed area (~3000 km2) about 5,400 ha oflands, mainly agricultural and paddy fields are likelyflooded. In addition, using WorldPop data, we canestimate that ~220,000 people are living withinflooded areas. It is likely that flood waters havebeen systematically underestimated along highlyvegetated areas along main river banks and withinbuilt-up urban areas because of the specialcharacteristics of the satellite data used. This is apreliminary analysis and has not yet been validatedin the field. Please send ground feedback toUNITAR - UNOSAT.
