DESCRIPTION:
Arc air gouging with carbon electrodes and compressed air is the fastest and cheapest process for cutting and/or
gouging a wide range of materials used in industry. The procedure uses a special torch (EUROTROD K3000 or
EUROTROD 4000), where a carbon electrode is used to melt the material and at the same time, a powerful jet of
air blows away the molten material.
SUITABLE FOR:
Unalloyed steels, Low-alloyed steels, Medium-alloyed steels, High-alloyed steels, Cast iron and other industrial
metals.

1. Objective
The present description presents the vacuum packing storage used by Electro-Portugal, Lda.
Currently the basic electrodes (EUROTROD BN’s and BD’s) and the special electrodes (EUROTROD LC’s,
LR’s and FN’s) are packed in vacuum: this process, by means of special agreement with the customer, can be
used with other types of electrodes.
2. Generalities
The high temperatures of the electric arc can provoke the decomposition of the existent water in the electrode
covering in its components oxygen and hydrogen, responsible for the porosity in the deposited metal. The
hydrogen is also a strong cold fissuration inductor.
Electro-Portugal, Lda, makes a very demanding selection in the mineral raw materials, where one of the
basic parameters is the amount of water crystallization and the necessary temperature for its removal; this
study is made with the literature of the supplier and confirmed with tests in the laboratories of the company.
At the exit of the oven, the electrodes are practically exempt of water, being now the problem transferred to
the absorption of humidity from surrounding air; another important parameter of selection of the raw materials
is the hygroscopic behaviour, which is exclusively analysed in our laboratories.
The hygroscopic properties of the covering is minimized, but not eliminated: the conventional packing is
incapable to guarantee the lack of humidity in the electrodes, having necessity of special cares by the user.
The packing of the electrodes in emptiness (vacuum), avoid the user of all these cares, having reflected
significant economic aspects, respecting the storage conditions, heating before use, maintenance in the place of
application, consumption of energy, documentary evidences of the involved procedures in the scope of the
Systems of Quality, occupation of staff and quality of the deposited metal. The packing in vacuum allows the
ready use of the electrodes, after opening.

3. Description of the packing
The exterior packing is one plated of multiple layers plastic-aluminium, which is stamped in vacuum on an
interior box containing the electrodes, assuring the maximum mechanical protection of the packed material:
after the exit of the oven the operation is lead in a way to reduce the minimum time of exposure of the
electrodes to the surrounding air. The vacuum is perfectly identified by the strong crushing of the exterior
plated to the interior packing.
Electro-Portugal. Lda uses two types of vacuum boxes:
a) Box of HDPE (high-density polyethylene) for the special electrodes; the electrodes are packed with 1,3 to
2,0 kg, depending on the diameter and length.
b) Conventional box for the basic electrodes, with 2,3 to 3,2 kg, depending on the diameter and length.
4. Utilization
During the 3 posterior years to the packing in vacuum, the electrodes are in conditions of immediate use, since
the packing is not damaged, what it is easily detected.
After opening the box, the electrodes can be used in a period of 5 hours: this value was determined
experimentally in our laboratories, depositing material conserved in the oven, simulating the conditions
standard of 27° Celsius and 80 % of relative humidity.
Exceeded the indicative pointed limits; the electrodes must suffer a recovery treatment (heating before use).
