International Film Workshop 2019 International Film Workshop is held from May 20 to June 20 2019 in which students from USA and Japan are collaborating together to make films. While the Japan studio of Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), known for its advanced architectural education, is held in Tokyo, students and faculty of SCI-Arc and Japanese Universities, Hosei University, Keio University, the University of Tokyo and Meiji University, participate in the workshop. Six student groups will make short films and represent their works on June 20 as the world premiere. International Film Workshop has been held every year in Tokyo since 2010 (except for 2011). This year, we will challenge representation by projection mapping the student films for the first time. The world premiere will be held at the Warehouse H, provided with the cooperation of Warehouse TERRADA. The theme of the project this year is "Labyrinth." Tokyo has been described as a metabolizing, energetic city that pulses with movement, light, life and change. Its labyrinthine streets structure urban experiences that resonate across cultures, disciplines and times. Tokyo is a city that somehow maintains its distinct qualities of space, scale and human inhabitation while fully embracing a dynamic, relentless pace of change. While its historic cycle of utter devastation and reconstruction is less apparent in the 21st century, Tokyo’s range of scales, diverse atmospheres and juxtaposed personal narratives remain. What are the material, spatial and narrative structures that enable this local durability in such an environment of complexity and constant global transformation? Student groups will produce a short film of more than three but less than five minutes in length for public viewing. This film will transpose a quality of Tokyo place selected from one of six places, Shinjuku, Kichijoji, Yanaka / Sendagi / Nezu, Yokohama, Rikugien and Kawasaki, to this theater space. It should be a film that includes both the architectural features and personal narratives of the place. Three projectors will be located in the warehouse space to allow for either a single immersive audio/visual experience or having up to three films woven together in this space over time. Students are encouraged to go beyond simply re-presenting Tokyo places from there to here, but to write, illustrate, film, compose, manipulate, and edit to present an experience that extends beyond legible/familiar temporal and spatial conditions they find. Take us from there to here and then on into the dreams, fantasies, sprits and abstractions of this city. Take us from where we are and what we know to where we are lost and do not know. Take us all beyond the labyrinth.
