Dear GEM Fellowship Selection Committee:
I am delighted to write a letter of recommendation for Ms. Frances Coronel, who is applying for the
2015 GEM Fellowship.
Frances is a full-time senior undergraduate who will be graduating in just 2.5 years with a BS in
Computer Science at Hampton University (HU), where she started in Spring 2014. Frances spent
Fall 2014 studying abroad in Germany. I have known Frances as her Academic Advisor and then in
several courses as her instructor for CSC 152 (Computer Programming II - Summer 2014), CSC
210 (C++ Programming - Spring 2014), CSC 395 (Web and Mobile Development - Spring 2014)
and CSC 570 (Databases - Fall 2015).
Though a bit reserved in the classroom, Frances has always asked for help when she needs it. She
earned an A- in CSC 152 and an A in both CSC 210 and CSC 395. As of right now, her cumulative GPA is a 3.63 on a 4.0 scale and she has been on the Dean’s List every semester since her first at
HU. Her outstanding academic performance has recently placed her in the Golden Key Honor
Society as well, ranking her in the top 15% at HU.
Frances is also the Website Committee Chair of the Associate in Computing Machinery (ACM) HU
Student Chapter, a scholarship recipient of HU STARS (Student & Technology in Academia,
Research, & Service) Leadership Corps and of the ACM Richard Tapia Conference. She was the
only student who attended the 2015 Association for the Advancement of Artificial (AAAI)
Conference in Texas. She has acted as a department peer tutor and as a mentor to incoming
freshmen.
Her contributions to the CS department deserve emphasis as well. Frances started creating a website
using the Wordpress platform for the ACM Student Chapter and revamping the social media outlets
we have for CS@HU through her design work in October 2014. The website itself is wonderfully
maintained even now with over 2K+ views and 150+ followers since it was created. There is a lot
more opportunity now for our students to become involved in ACM because of this website she
created.
Frances is a bright, talented, young, Hispanic, female Computer Science student, who strives to do
her very best in academia as well as in her participation in various outside classroom activities. It is
very rare to have female students majoring in Computer Science and rarer still for them to do well.
Frances truly deserves to be recognized for her hard working ethic and numerous accomplishments. I therefore strongly recommend Ms. Frances Coronel for the 2015 GEM Fellowship Award.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
or at (757) 727-5082.
Sincerely,
Chutima Boonthum-Denecke, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Computer Science
